how do i get ozzie to leave a trail....i just lose him

How do i follow ozzie in forest. I get him angry and follow him outside, then into the forest but he dosent leave a trail so when i go off screen to follow ozzie, i just lose him....what am i doing wrong. i brings me to a top view of the map and i have to go back to ozzies house and i try it again and again.
