View Full Version : Go Buy 'Max Payne' Now!

Not to get off the subject too much... but oh my. A 3DRealms game that I actually enjoy.
If you are into great Single Player action and you want to burn some time until JKII, get <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00002SUOV/escapemonkeyisla">MAX PAYNE</a>.
It's like you're playing the Matrix over and over.
I may write up a review for this game if I find some extra time...
07-25-2001, 09:56 PM
how much does it cost?
07-25-2001, 10:07 PM
I can't wait to get it but unfortunately i'll have to wait until I get a new computer. :o
07-26-2001, 12:30 AM
I have the game. Will post detailed impressions late tonight or perhaps tomorrow.
07-26-2001, 03:57 AM
Um.. scratch that. Just so you you guys know...
Win2k + GeForce 3 = no max payne
//learned the hard way
**** like this makes me *not* want to support these companies (pay them my hard earned money) and get instead these games through other means. I shouldn't shell out $50 for a poorly tested game. How could they miss something like that in beta testing?
Anyway, the game kicks major boo-tay. Bullet time is one of the most innovative and incredible features I've ever seen in a game. I only got to play the first chapter because the second one won't load, so I'll delay my write up until next week.
07-26-2001, 04:33 AM
Hopefully they'll come out w/a patch for that :\
I just played some more... Chapter 3 now.
I love how you can interact with the world in such detail. You walk in snow, it leaves a print. You touch an object, it responds.
I'll take some screens of me doing some funny things pretty soon ;)
07-26-2001, 05:13 AM
I played some more of the tutorial. I found a secret room that contains an Ingram... now that's some real fun. ;)
I have fun trying to recreate scenes from the Matrix. With the Ingram I killed three guys in one shootdodge. And another thing I liked doing was running at two guys, shootdodge right past them, turn so my back is toward the ground and so I'm facing them and cap their asses. I also enjoyed running at the van, jumping on it, and then shootdodgimng, flying over the guy, aiming down and putting some dual beretta bullets in his head. I also tried doing the same thing from three stories up (where the secret room is), but I died on the fall. :)
However, one feature that is sorely missing from the game is the ability to record demos/videos. Imagine the competitions they could have for the coolest sequence or set of moves.
Also, I hear that MaxEd isn't as simple as it was advertised to be. Oh well...

I think you need to right click and save target as for that link to work...

07-26-2001, 08:28 PM

07-26-2001, 08:37 PM

Multiplayer available in Max Payne?
07-26-2001, 09:17 PM
No MP..but I have bought games where I didn't get MP..like Alice and Blue Shift and Opposing Force...so ya know
07-26-2001, 09:17 PM
yeah....i was just wondering why there isnt any MP
07-26-2001, 09:19 PM
There doesnt have to be MP in a game. Often they concentrate on the SP, and then add the MP in an add-on.
07-26-2001, 10:49 PM
Hey Canoli, here's something I found on the voodooextreme forums:
Just wanted to let you know that we're aware of the problems.
It seems that with GF3 + Win2k + Athlon combination the game is exiting to desktop when loading a new map.
The game has been tested with different GF3/Athlon configs, and was developed mostly on Geforce+Win2k machines, so at the moment we are assuming that this is an issue with the user configuration (some drivers conflicting with each other or something).
As of yet, we haven't been able to re-create the problem at our office, so I can't give you any solid info. As soon as we get the game to crash here as well, we should be able to figure out how the problem can be fixed. In all probability a patch won't be needed.
Will keep you guys posted.
Here ya go... here's the link if you wanna read through the whole thread (not too long):
Max Payne problems - Remedy answers (http://www.veforums.com/Forum33/HTML/000031.html)
It looks like they have been able to recreate the problem, but they haven't figured out how to solve it. You probably won't need to patch the game though.
Here's another snippet from NVnews:
Guys, First thing. If you're running Max Payne under Windows 2000, please make sure that you have installed the Service Pack 2.
There is a known issue with Win2k and 3D applications that can be fixed with SP2.
Please install it, as it will cut down some of the reports were getting. This is to make sure that we won't be chasing after problems that we can't affect or fix.
I hope that helped :)
UPDATE: Looks like they nailed it. However, it's one of those damn compiler optimization problems (programmers will know what I'm talking about) so you'll have to download a patch, which will be released soon.
Anyway, here's the latest thread:
Max Payne v1.01 coming soon (http://www.veforums.com/Forum33/HTML/000062.html)

Yeah, thanks for the news. I've been following the situtaion a VE and ArsTechnica.
And no, there is no multiplayer. Simply because there is no possible way of implementing bullet time in MP. I'm expecting some awesome sp mods however, and no doubt a Matrix TC. I have a crappy net connection, so no MP doesn't kill me.
07-27-2001, 01:15 AM
I bought it today. I'm having problems around the subway level (bank). I have no health so I can last long enough.
Also, that little dot as the cross hair? too small IMHO
07-27-2001, 02:46 AM
I like the dot, more challenging. Auto aim... bah to that!
And that patch should be coming out soon.

Wha?! You didn't like Duke3D? How about Commander Keen or Wacky Wheels when they were formally known as Apogee? (And btw, Remedy developed the game. ;))
07-27-2001, 02:53 PM
The GF3/Win2k Max Payne bug has been squashed already!:
I'm sure Remedy's on everyone's good side. ;)
07-27-2001, 04:04 PM
Yes! Damn, good thing that came out about 20 minutes after I fell asleep... or I don't think I would've gone to bed.
07-27-2001, 05:40 PM
As far as 3DRealms goes... I'm still waiting for Prey.
As far as Max Payne... Everything I think it has gotten as violent as it can get, it proves me wrong ;) I'm now in Part II and I must say... it gets weird REAL fast towards the end of Part I.
I keep forgetting to take some screens, but there was one that would have rocked if I hand and extra hand.
I was in bullet time falling backwards, down a flight of stairs, holding two Berrettas and I killed 3 people before I hit the ground. It would be a great scene for a trailer.
This game == The Matrix ;)
07-27-2001, 05:49 PM
How much do you want to bet there will be a few Matrix TC's? That will definitely extend this game's lifespan.

No dice, theif. How 'bout doing the right thing and paying for it? If nothing else so that we don't have to pay any more for the game because of you. Remedy and 3DRealms deserve their money.
07-27-2001, 07:24 PM
I mean the demo....dunno if or when we'll be able to get the full version. I buy as many games as i can afford, but it aint my fault they charge so much.
Btw, i just found a new preview with 63 screens(a few new ones there i believe)...

WOW! I gotta get this game!
07-27-2001, 08:39 PM
If you want or need to cheat (not that i do myself) here (http://www.avault.com/cheats/getcheat.asp?game=maxpaynecc) is an extensive and up-to-date list of them
Also if you have bug problems the latest patch is.....here (http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_temp.asp?patch=mpayne). Its 6.5Mb, not too bad i suppose.
The patch to version 1.01 addresses the following issues:
- Exit to desktop stability issues addressed:
The issues with the game crashing into Windows' desktop when loading a new map have been addressed.
- Game doesn't start with some CD-Rom drives:
A newer version of SafeDisc copy protection is used. If the game still doesn't start up, please contact email@example.com. Please include detailed hardware configuration information from your PC including CD-ROM model and operating system.
For other troubleshooting, please refer to the game readme.

Actually, part of the reason prices are high is because developers have to compensate for piracy.
07-28-2001, 01:07 AM
ya, but if no one stole... i would bet the prices wouldnt go down a lick...
07-28-2001, 01:22 AM
Yeah but the chances of that happening are slim to none.
07-28-2001, 02:51 AM
i just installed the game...it is the best game ive ever played, i love this game!!!
which key is for screens? i wanna take some right away!!!
i love the shot-gun/sawed-off
i can blow through 3 people at once!!
my finger never leaves elite bullet-time mode!!!
OMG i hope JK2 is as good or better!
there is no need for MP...this is good enough, and violent too!
once again:what button is for screenshots?
07-28-2001, 03:55 AM
Print screen is the only way, but it only pastes one at a time to th clip board, so if you take a screen, you need to go to a graphics program right away to save it.
I'll be on vacation for the next 2 days... no MP for me.
07-28-2001, 04:12 AM
posted by someone at VE:
Add the -screenshot parameter to your shortcut. It should look like this.
C:\Program Files\Max Payne\MaxPayne.exe -screenhot
Use F10 to take a screenshot. They are stored in your Max Payne folder as a .tga file.
The parameter could be "screenshot" instead, but that's what was posted. Maybe Remedy just tried to throw everyone off? Anyone get it to work yet?

07-28-2001, 11:57 AM
thanks for the help, it works, i appreciate it :)
07-28-2001, 12:02 PM
Instead of adding additional parameters isnt it easier to press printScreen??
Here (http://www.3dactionplanet.com/maxpayne/) is one of the better max payne sites. Early days for the site, but still quite nice.

07-28-2001, 02:39 PM
I went through Part I pretty quickly, so I'm taking my time on Part II. This is easily one of the darkest / most violent games of the year.
Let's hope SOFII retains the SOF violence.. :)

07-29-2001, 10:28 PM
I can offer thunb screws
07-30-2001, 12:04 AM
i got to "the baseball bat"
but when i got there, i started with 0 painkillers, and my red up to my neck...
i couldnt get through that little part without using godmode...but after that, ive been able to do just fine...
i wish i wouldnt have had to resort to cheating, i spent an hour trying NOT to!
07-30-2001, 01:16 AM
I'm past the baseball bat part by a little, I believe. Full life, 8 painkillers. I haven't played since I got back because I'm really beat.
07-30-2001, 05:10 PM
Yea, i hate it when games eventually force you to cheat. It makes you feel pointless.
07-30-2001, 06:37 PM
The game is fairly easy, even with it's adjusting difficulty level. I don't forsee any cheating for me...
07-30-2001, 06:58 PM
hmm...i expect you will...that is, if you get screwed like i did...
and now, im stuck in the stupid manor, and i cant go anywhere...this game is really getting on my nerves...
07-30-2001, 09:41 PM
How'd you get screwed?
07-31-2001, 01:48 AM
dude, hes a guy, i dont think we wanna know, at least i dont wanna know...
07-31-2001, 03:27 AM
Well, I'm just wondering if he screwed himself or if the game screwed him.
07-31-2001, 03:29 AM
All you had to do was wait for the 3 groups of people to walk by, then follow them closely. Once they pass the main door on the left, go into bullet-time mode and DIVE for the door on the right. Once you do that, get all your weapons and run to the next door (elevator.)
I didn't have to kill a single person on that level... but I agree... It was tough :

and what are you talking about xcape?
i got to the part where hes like "two down one to go or something" thats upstairs..there is a door across the upstairs that has cracks in it...and doubledoors underneath...both those doors are locked...and they dont respond to nades, shotgun shells, or molotov ****ing cocktails...what do i DO man?
i dont get it from what you suggested!!
07-31-2001, 04:36 AM
oh...you were talking about the baseball bat...thanks a lot...i couldve used that tip before i quick saved after killing the first guy...
thanks though for trying...
07-31-2001, 11:11 AM
You've got Max Payne? Awesome...what are your systems...I'm kinda anxious to see if I can run it!
07-31-2001, 01:04 PM
min specs are something like (dont quote me):
16-bit video RAM
400-800 MB free space
its something like that...keep in mind its better to have a computer a LOT better than just those minimum requirements
07-31-2001, 06:35 PM
Well, thats kinda obvious with most games. If you have the minimum specs then loading times will be long and your computer may jump frames. My old P2 233Mhz was enough to run ST:V EF with max graphics though and the specs for full graphics were 450Mhz processor..so specs arent always accurate. Actually it could have something to do with my GeForce 3 :)
07-31-2001, 06:39 PM
no...definitely nothing to do with your 256 MB of video RAM
07-31-2001, 06:40 PM
08-01-2001, 04:58 AM
All your base... (http://www.geocities.com/onlyonecanoli42/maxpayneallyourbase.gif)
AWESOME. You've gotta download it! (Right click, save target as.) A pic I took of a certain... thing. ;)
There are also other easter eggs in the game.
A password to the laundry room is "John Woo".
Some guards are talking about action movies and bullet time.
Two thugs are speaking REM lyrics near a fire when you leave the hotel... "This is the end of the world as we know it. I don't fell fine..."
Elevator music in an elevator--you shoot the speaker, and Max says "Thank you!"
And, I haven't seen/heard this, but people have told me about it:
A news flash is on a TV... Something to the effect of "The Aeris Corporation will soon have a bigger monopoly than Micro*static*..."

Oh, and that 'All your base' thing is keerazzzy, Canoli! ;)
08-01-2001, 12:01 PM
yeah canoli ive seen all of those...can you help me get through this part please???
08-01-2001, 02:23 PM
Well, how do you think this (my) system will perform with Max Payne?
Voodoo Banshee 16mb
08-01-2001, 02:29 PM
you will be able to hack it...a little better than minimum...but it wont be nearly as beautiful as a standard requirement system
if things keep expanding technologically, you will need to buy a new computer to play Outcast almost definitely...i am and i have 800 Mhz...im definitely gonna be over the Ghz mark before i tackle Outcast
08-01-2001, 05:12 PM
Hopefully I will have my 2Ghz system by then (if its out) so i should hbe able to run it fine http://www.geocities.com/captainrave2001/other17.gif
08-01-2001, 06:51 PM
PreTZ, are you at the same spot as before? We're near the same area; I just passed that part.
So, you killed that one boss dude, and Max says "Two down, one to go..."
You walk out of that room, and there should be the final boss shooting a few ingram rounds at you. Fire a round or 20 back, and he'll retreat. Do not go downstairs. Stay on the second floor, and head near the single door that it opposite of where you currently stand. Walk over there, and try to open the door. It won't.
Inside, you'll hear two guys talking:
"Hey, it's Max Payne! He's gonna get us."
"Don't worry about it; this will stop him. It can stop anything!"
Back away from the door immediately, as the guy shoots a grenade your way, blasting the door open. Definitely save at this point, it'll take a few tries.
If you shootdodge or bullet time your way in there, you're dead meat. I really hope you have a grenade left. You have to get the angle right, and chuck the grenade in there so it lands near the guy, but not be in the doorway where he can nail you. Took me a few tries, but it can be done.
After you do that, clear the room, then kill the final guy of the trio. Walk into the next room, have a conversation with the boss, get busted by the feds or some group, and wake up in another dream.
God damn, those dream levels sux0r. Only part I dislike about the game so far.
08-01-2001, 06:56 PM
ok...i tried that before, ill try it again, thanks for the help if it doesnt work...ill post again...
i like how Max can play the piano in that level :D

Cool. I'm currently on part 3, chapter 5.

interesting ending it took me a while to figure out that after you *** *** ***** you have to then ****** * *******....i could get the first part but didnt figure out the second!!!
im glad i killed that evil woman though...i am eager to see if there is a sequel...maybe they will think it through a little better for some variety
out of a possible 100%
i give it a 89% :)

I'm on the next to last mission now. I'll go back and play a little later.
08-02-2001, 05:33 AM
I just finished it. Awesome game. People are complaining about its length, but the game lasted just about as long as I want SP games to last me. This is probably the second or third most enjoyable SP experiences I've ever had. Frankly the only thing I *really* disliked were the two dream levels- they flat out sucked. A couple other problems was that the first mode was too easy (I finished the game with full health and all 8 painkillers) and that the game was extremely linear. Most of the game was confined to buildings that had only one route; not much exploration can be done here.
I'll rate some of the aspects of the game.
Sound-10.0 [Perfect. Fit the atmosphere perfectly. All of the enemies speak. You sneak up behind them and hear them talking on the other side of the wall. Great voice acting all around.]
Graphics-9.5 [Great graphics too, as you can tell from the screenshots. Aweome texturing. Nice models. I had some hitches in framerate every once in a while.]
Gameplay-9.4 [Awesome. Bullet-time saves Max Payne from being your average shoot-em-up. Tight, sweet controls make this the best third person shooter. Ever. But I can't get over how damn terrible the two dream levels are. I thought we ditched walking on tight lines and platform jumping a few years ago.]
Replay Value-??? [Ugh. Who knows? With no multiplayer available (and believe me, bullet-time would not work in multiplayer) this may be a game I only play once. Yeah, there are two extra "modes" if I can even call them that. One makes it harder and one makes you beat it quickly. This one will come down to the editing community and see if they can pull off some great mods/TC's (Matrix, anyone?). Oh, and speaking of editing... editing isn't my thing by any means. But their WYSIWYG editor ain't as user friendly as they claimed. Only time will tell...]
Bottom line: Go out and buy the damn game already.
