View Full Version : The enemy as master ?!?

I was thinking ,does anybody remembers the day whern JK was released ?!?

There was a Raven FPS whitch was around about the same time ,called Hexen II.

At the time i didn't have acces to the internet ,so i have no idea about what kind of comments and opinions people had ,but personally i remember having a real hard time deciding whitch game was better ,therefore i assume there must have been some antagonsim between the 2.

Consider that at the time i wasn't even a Star War fan (not that i have become one since then ,althought i like the original movies a lot :) ) ,the choise was objective and impartial.

At the end JK won thanks to the awesome expansion ,Hexen II one wasn't even near to be as good.

The main differences between the 2 were :

Hexen II

Pros :

- Great graphics ,with some of the most amazing textures ever done in a FPS (upon each release of course) ,and althought the game was powered by the Quake engine ,the game looked almost as good as Quake II (without colored lighting).

- Amazing level design and great ambient

- Perfect blend between a adventure (lots of great puzzle quests) and a FPS with some small RPGish elemtent.

- 4 Different classes (warrior ,rouge ,thief ,demon) ,each with their unique weapons and style.

- Monsters ,this game probably has the best monsters ever done in a FPS ,their design was so beatiful sometime it was a pity you had to kill them :)

- Great interactivity ,with the ability to destroy just about everything ,including wall sections and whole gicantic statues.
The game also featured a very primitive ghoul-like system with one of the monsters.

- Coope mode ,a rarety those days

- Music score ,very well done

- Lots of unique belt objects whitch almost emulated the role of force powers in JK

Cons :

- Bad multiplayer ,umbalanced classes

- Slow gameplay due quest idles.

- Classes idea was good except the game had a very little longevity (like any other adventure game worth of that name :) ) ,and only 4 weapons per classes was a little too little considering it was unlikely to replay the game with the other classes ,unless you really loved the game (like me)

- Way too small levels ,game very short (althought due the quests it took me almost a month to finish it).

Jedi Knight

- Incredible music score (i never even heard it before ,i was pratically blown away)

- Huge open areas

- The light saber was more fun than Hexen II's sword\axe\hammer\knife\shyche all combined togeter ;)

- Incredible level design (more towards innovation than detail as in Hexen II)

- First FPS to feature a 'movie' like gameplay

- Cool story line (finally)

- Great cut scenes

- Force powers

- Best gameplay in a FPS ever

- Great multiplayer

- Did i mentioned the levels were huge ?!?

Cons :

- Subpar visuals

- Enemy design wasn't that impressive

In th end ,they were both incredible games ,and i found amusing the developer of one is now working on the sequel of the other one ,should we exspect a blend of what was great about both games ?!? :D

As this isn't strictly JKII related, I'm moving it to the Swamp. Get your waders...no, seriously... ;)

We dont need lava troopers :) we've got the 'jerk'

Are you sure they are lava troopers? Perhaps they are just forge smelt troopers or (I know it's a bit of a stretch) fuel troopers? :D

Well in theory the empire could have many diferent types suited to every environment. Their not going to just have one type of stormtrooper. Can you imagine how uncamoflauged that would be.

Wait....where are the little known but equally frightening tropical stormtroopers?

How about Aqua Troopers? With heavy-duty marine suits complete with mini-props, oxygen extractors, fusion cutters, grab clamps, etc... for patrolling undersea bases? :)

My top two are the "void troopers" a.k.a. imperial pilots :) and the "furniture troopers". Used for assasinations, these guys sneak into an office at night disguised as an office chair and wait till people come in the next morning.

Now for my semi-serious suggestion. How about ash troopers, for use in volcanic areas? ("the empire struggled for years to find the perfect paint for the ash troopers, until they realized they could just use ash")
