The Sp Demo really rocks!!!

The MP Demo was great also, but the maps were a little small

I'm picking it up as soon as I can...

I have to buy a new computer to run that game.

I think the MP is going to suck, so I'm going to wait it out and see some impressions on whether or not the single player game is worth theprice of admission.

I've just been playing the SP demo and I've got as far as the rocket launchers (but haven't completed it yet). My first impression was 'this is fantastic'.

Of course, I died a few times and kept restarting the level...and that's when I downgraded it to just very, very good.

Note...there are a couple of spoilers in here if you haven't played the demo...

Here are a couple of points I didn't like...and I only noticed them because the rest of the demo was great, and these sort of stood out...

1. Sometimes your soldier buddies just follow you around...instead of taking cover, and laying down suppressing fire.
2. You can't lay down on the ground to return fire...even though your enemies do.
3. I haven't found a way to issue any orders...like [i]stay here and cover me with a sniper rifle while I go and sort out that machine gunner, instead of standing in the middle of the street and getting your butt shot off. And yes, that last part did happen - my AI buddies were shooting at someone else, standing right out in the open, and not reacting to a hail of bullets physically knocking them back, from the machine gunner down the street. :(
3. They don't pick up med packs...when they obviously really, really need them. I couldn't believe that they didn't include that in the AI, because it would have made for a slightly more interesting game by keeping your companions alive for a little longer.
4. It seems to be very short of puzzle elements (in fact, I don't remember any), and comes across as quite linear.

Other than these gripes, I really enjoyed playing it. The attention to detail is great, the AI is mostly great - especially the enemies, who do take cover...and even fire around corners without looking. That's why I couldn't understand why my AI buddies couldn't do that.

I know you are supposed to get a sense of real war, and dying comrades...but even so, the AI budies could have responded a little better to some situations.

I'll definitely be getting the full game, because overall it's quite challenging, and manages to convey a real sense of a war in progress. Even my wife stood over my shoulder and said "That's just like Band Of Brothers" (which we saw a month or so ago on TV) - so they must have done something right. :)

However, I'm not sure it really deserves to knock Half-Life off it's pedestal (based on my impressions playing the demo). If they had tweaked the AI of your buddies a bit more, and put in some puzzle-solving elements to get your team past various obstacles, it probably could have...

Although I agree with most of what you just said, I doubt it will be knocking HL off of any pedestal just yet. I think Deus Ex has a better single player game than Half-Life in the first place, and I doubt MoH can compete with DX. But believe me, I will be pleasantly surprised if MoH can play with Deus Ex. I also have serious doubts about this game's multiplayer capabilities. I hate to admit it, but a game this simmy will not win the hearts of gamers (myself included). The slow movement and unfortunate lack of blood will significantly hurt it in the eyes of many a gamer.

Personally, I'm looking straight at Unreal 2 to be the game to revolutionize the FPS genre and put HL in its place. But I sure hope that I'm wrong, and MoH does do some toppling of pedestals. It'll hold us over til JKII. ;)

My reference to Half-Life is in response to some reviews and interviews I've seen across the net, where some game devs and reviewers reckon it's a HL beater.

As I said above...I don't think it deserves that accolade. :)

I'm sure MOH:AA will be a worthwhile gaming experience...and perhaps the ending won't be absolute rubbish like in Half-Life. (I still think they should have pitted you against bigger, nastier versions of all the aliens to finish off - I really enjoyed that battle with big momma head-crab.)

However, when I look back at all of the ground-breaking titles that have been released over the years, MOH:AA seems to be lacking the edge. It is supposed to be more realistic - but I understand that you can't drive vehicles in the game either. How is that realistic?

If they had tackled the project with a bit more ambition, they might have come up with something like Battlefield 1942 - an MP World War II game currently in development - where you can apparently drive just about everything, from what I've been reading.

I can only hope that they will release a patch for MOH:AA to fix some of the things I didn't like in the demo. If not, then it is sure to hurt the game in the long term, as you say.

I am inclined to agree with you that Unreal II is a prime contender to knock HL down off that pedestal.

Did you guys ever crash in the middle of gameplay? It did for mine....pretty often (although the Training didn't crash at all)....

Any ideas?

LOL the game is so short...I beat the game in 8 hrs..

Millions o' Monkeys
01-26-2002, 07:27 PM
only 8 hours...well i guess it would have countless hours of mp mmmm

Roger
01-26-2002, 08:22 PM
Did you play it in "easy" difficulty setting? 8 hours sounds way too short...

SlowbieOne
01-26-2002, 09:12 PM
Well...I finally beat it and I must say SaberPro is right. I beat the game in no longer than 9 hours, and I played on normal difficult setting at a fairly slow pace. I like to take my time when going through levels in a FPS because I like to admire the atmosphere.:)

Even though it's short, most of the levels are top-notch. I might even go as far to say that D-Day was the most intense level ever in a FPS, but that's debatable for me. The way the first mission in the game started out was one of the coolest beginnings to a game I've played.:)

I liked the weapons, but the lack of blood or any form of indication of a hit really took away from this game for some reason. The AI was pretty tough except for the fact that all of the guns are pretty loud and you can get away with murder without the guards in the tower hearing you, no matter if you were right under them.

Haven't tried MP yet, I'm sure it's decent, but I can't see it lasting too long.

All in all, I'm glad I played it, but in the end it was just a minor detour on the road to JK2.:)

Yeah i thought the last level is going to be something like dueling with Hitler or something...:(

Blow up the chemical facility, The End. I was like "WTF?"

D-DAY IS THE BEST! It's pretty hard NOT to get shot while in the water. Countless bullets flying towards you, forcing you to find some cover. Best mission. I also like the mission where you stand on the Humvee and machinegun everyone, the mission where you have to stop Nazi from blowing up the bridge and target enemy Tigers with binocular (that was intense), and also the mission where you pilot the Tiger and shoot down everything in your sight (bulletproof tank, although not rocket-proof :))

Nine hours isn't worth $50, in my opinion. I'll wait until I see it marked down.

I need to play more DAoC anyway. ;)

Actually, I just read that Circuit City is selling MoH: AA at $29.99 on Sunday. But I wonder if nine hurs is worth even $30. Oh well.

Darth Bjorn
01-27-2002, 01:12 AM
Yeah, MoH:AA was too short. And the end was a total let down. "The End" What the heck was that?! Where's the rest of it?! At least give me an animation, maybe of the guy receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor, or something. I mean, that is the name of the thing. However, I did really dig this game. It was a heckofalotta fun. And absolutely gorgeous. And, yeah, D-Day was just amazing. I felt like I was in "Saving Private Ryan". :)

i buy all my games retail. i love the box, mannul and everything else that comes with the game. i'm not getting mohaa cause i didn't like the demos. ii'd rather wait and save up for hitman 2 and IGI2. i like open ended games, games were u can go back and play it differently, something that IGI and Hitman did for me.

i'm probaby the only one who is not gonna get it.

I also purchased Medal of Honor. Must say that the retail version looks better than the demo. The textures are extra sharp and at times looks like bump mapping. The demo read texture compression not activated until retail, and this could be the explanation. I'm really enjoying the game and just completed the D-day beach landing. That being said that landing is THE most impressive action level I've ever seen in any game! The multiplayer, with the patch, is also very fun with good performance using a 56k modem.

stephenG, you say you are saving up for hitman2 abd IGI2, well...instead of IGI2 you should try out SoF2. it is coming with a random mission genorator like no other fps has done before. it wil give it great replayability and it looks amazing...i would srongly suggest you getting that one :)

If you mean that 'Delayed until the end of the year' stuff, then rest assured that it's a load of rubbish -

(Taken from this site (http://www.sof.jolt.co.uk/).)

Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix delayed !! by Freaked - 24/01@14:03

Over the last 24hrs rumors have been rife that SoF2 will be delayed maybe to Christmas 2002, this has caused a little panic in the community.

Thankfully there is no truth in this rumor and with the help of Kenn Hoekstra this rumor has been dispelled:

"There's no truth to the rumor that SOF2 is delayed until the end of the year. However, we've never really given an official release date for the game, so that sort of makes it difficult to define "delayed." I expect Activision will be narrowing down an approximate release date for SOF2 soon and making some sort of announcement about it. We'll keep you posted when such an announcement becomes available.

--Kenn"

So we can all rest easy now and just wait for the Announcement that’s due from Ravensoft regarding SoF2.

:)

Yeah, I've heard :( (It's pretty hard not to have heard! :D)

I hope they revoke the ban and see sense

If they ban SOF2, they'll have a full-blown revolt by every FPS gamer on their hands :D

Looks to me like it has a lot more gore than the first one. Don't know if you've seen the video with the damage zones or not? Appears to be pretty bloody violent... heh...heh... ;p

Man, I can't get passed those two machine guns through the minefield... (beach)

Any clues?

TheJackal
01-27-2002, 08:12 PM
First thing you do is:

after your commander yells go and cover fires. you jump into the first impact hole and grab the sniper rifle. then quickly crouch and zoom at the far left turret gunner. kill him. then run to the other side. of course without steping on any mines.

If you need help, just ask me. I finished the game allready :)

And the graphics are very nice. It uses the Quake 3 engine.

JP - what would be a good frame of reference for you?

I find the graphics about the same (on average) as Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Somewhat better than Elite Force.

Not too long ago (about 9 months) I got a GeForce2 card, and started playing SoF and Quake II. Both impressed me ... and then I played Elite Force and was no longer impressed :)

Seriously, MoH:AA looks great - everything is well detailed - but still 'poly'd' in places. Things in these games are so good that you find yourself asking whether the leaves on the trees look good enough ... these games have breezes, rain, fog, clouds, and they all look great ...

Whats the SP demo mission about and is it very long?

txa1265
02-26-2002, 10:36 AM
I think it is mission 3 level 2, but I'm not sure. It is a decent outdoor level - plenty of weapons and baddies to deal with.

As for the length, I do agree ... I got stuck in a couple of places, but aside from that it was hard to believe how quickly I was done with it ... I still think it was worth the $40 I paid, I know I'll play it again.

As for driving - you drive a tank. Personally i found those levels a mixed bag. It broke things up, but I found I wanted out ... I actually like in RtCW where you *accompany* the tank rather than drive it ... but that is just me - plus it is really cool to turn your turret and take out a building ... or a single soldier ;)
