View Full Version : What fun is cheating???

We see cheaters in almost every multi-player game out there, and my question to the cheaters is: Why is it so fun? Is it an adrenaline rush or something to be invincible? I have never been one to even use cheat codes or gameshark/sharkport for consoles, or even cliff's notes for books. What gives?

This really belongs in the swamp.

i think they like to ruin the game for others for example the MPBT 3025 beta had so many cheaters in it that they canceled the game because of it

Don't you dare speak negatively about Cliff's notes. In junior high when we read Shakespeare thats the only thing that helped us understand what was really going on.

the world needs cliff notes!

They help someone that wants to see the rest of the game, but cannot beat the next part.

They provide an alternative to the usual (mass murder kind)

Entertainment. Some are very amusing.

People cheat for various reasons, for spite, boredom, just to do it, because they suck, ect.

I remember on Counter-Strike beta 6 the cheating got so bad I went out and downloaded the cheats to "level the playing field". What was amazing was I knew then how to spot cheaters. But the thrill was gone for me by then. I quit playing CS until Beta 7 came out. Then the cheating made a big comeback in ver 1.1 and by that time I just quit playing CS altogether. If the cheating is so bad that you have to play the game 10 hours a day so you become so incredibly good that you can take out cheaters who can see you through walls and have auto-aims and stuff then it is not worth it.

Cheating is a double-edged sword too.

Not only is the game ruined by cheaters it also becomes ruined by paranioa from the non-cheaters who start to whine and compain and accuse anyone who kills them of cheating. I myself have been banned from servers for "cheating" and I wasn't cheating at all! That is the real ugly and tragic side to it all.

no patience to achieve the neccessary skills to be the best, desire to win above all else, no honor code, whatever.. bottom line: if their cheating ruins the game for others, they're inconsiderate jerks.

All good points, I noticed in the latest interview Cheating was mentioned and the ability to "kick" players or play private games was the answer, but that still means they are aware cheating will be around en mass.

By the way, I wasn't referring to Cliff notes in order to understand a book or even a strategy guide if you are stuck and you need 'tips' to beat a level, I was referring to using these as means to cheat without using effort.

I don't care if someone wants to use cheats in single player. If they don't feel like beating a level the real way, more power to them, but it's an annoyance in MP. The competition and the fun goes right out the window. What's the point of MP if no one can lose. It's just blah. I've run into situations where I can't get past part of a game no matter how hard I try and in those cases, I'll use a cheat or two, but when it comes to Multi, it's more fun when the playing field is level and the game is being played the way it was designed.

There will always be cheating in one form or another when it comes to online gaming.

How vigilant the developers of the game are intent on stopping cheaters is our best line of defense.

It is also prevented by gamers being vigulent and kicking people off who cheat. It isnt too bad when friends cheat for a laugh, but when your having a more serious game it just gets annoying

Ok, good. You're ok in my book. But it's a complicated book and you'll probably need the Cliff notes to understand it.;)

Cheating is for cheaters. What always really p***** me off is when people cheat in school. It's one thing for a game, which is supposed to be fun, but in school? That's just wrong.

Well... once you have beat the Single Player on a game, it's always nice to go back and use god mode on some of the harder enemies and levels and show them who is boss. :p

Obviously there will be cheating in JO. It's almost impossible to prevent it. One way that we can anticipate what cheaters will start to throw out first and how bad it will get, is for us to check out some of the other more recent games released by Raven to find out how cheating has affected those games.

Cheating/hacking got really bad in Jedi Knight for awhile there. It seems to have calmed down a bit since a year or two ago, but for awhile there it seemed everyone and his mother was cheating the game and ruining it for good honest players. That hacker kicker program for Jedi Knight was an all around life saver IMO.

Not sure why people do it, I think people did it just to ruin other people's fun. Nothing worse than having a good 2 hour game with alot of players, and then having a cheater/hacker come in and ruin everything. I guess some of these cheater/hackers have moved on to other games, just hope they stay clear of Jedi Outcast.

ugh

cheating in single player games is fine i dont give a care what they do on their own time (not to mention that few servers have cheats enabled)

hax on the other hand =)

i hate hax..grr....

in jk they are very hard to detect, especially if they are simply a miniscule tweak (like changing values to powerups, etc...) these things are incredibly annoying in a multiplayer game, and they have become quite prolific in jk...i used to be able to keep up and tell who is haxing, but now, after i have taken a break from jk, the hyperaims and toggles have become hard to detect for me, and i have given up trying to decide...i just play better and play with the people who i know are good w/o cheats...

this is going to be true for all games..

SO QUIT WHINING ABOUT IT!

cheating is only fun when you are in a multiplayer game with other people who either don't care or are cheating themselves and it is expected

cheating in a single player mode is fun after you have beaten a game legit, after that it makes the game more interesting and keeps the game appealing...

I was playing multi JK and some idiot-cheater was using a bacta tank that shot conc blasts, and he couldn't be killed. Whats the fun in that?

I hate cheating, what's the point of cheating, if you can't win others without cheating u just need more practise.

Btw...How can I spot cheaters? are there some kind of programs for that? I play lot of Aliens versus Predator 2 and there is also many cheaters...I think ;)

the beauty of the q3 engine is it has a pure server option so cheats are basically useless :syoda:

The only thing I'd add to that is that it is an option...so isn't it dependent on the server admin actually using it? ;) People should still be aware that cheating is possible... The best idea is to find a server that feels right (no obvious cheats) and try and stick with it - or play with a group of gamers you feel you can trust. From what I've seen on these and other forums, I think it's getting harder to find clean games online, because someone will always find a way past anti-cheating measures.

I can't say I've experienced it much myself, because I haven't played much online.

As for cheating in SP...well, I know a couple of people who do that, and they have my sympathy. I mean, if you can't beat a game on Easy then maybe you're playing the wrong kind of games. I'm not saying I'm white as snow and never tried it myself...I did cheat in SP (on the Hard setting) in a couple of games, but I found it wrecked my enjoyment. I had no sense of achievement, because when you are invulnerable to attack, tactics and thinking go out of the window. So I stopped cheating a long time ago...and I really enjoy my games a lot more, particularly when you get past a really tough section that might initially have you stumped.

The only time I used a cheat in recent years was when my copy of Half-Life was playing up, defaulted to D3D, and I kept dying in the lift going up to the level where you first encounter the marines. Odd bug...like I was hitting an invisible wall, and the upward motion of the lift crushed me flat. I've since sorted that problem, though. ;)

These days I usually play a game on Medium first...then go up to Hard (or above) when I've completed the game. The only real reason for that is because I really like to explore a game the first time around...which is harder to do with hordes of enemies coming at you. ;)

Couldn't have said it better myself. Thank goodness for pure servers, client/server, and easy kicking in JK2... May they be few in number, and weak in power!

fun cheats like big head mode are the only cheats that i use, and mini players in the NBA games
