View Full Version : Personal Lightsaber Handles

It's a true fact that it would be a real nice touch by raven if you could make your own lightsabre handle the way you want. All the lightsabers still have the same damage but least you can recognise and as said in another thread i read a whiel ago, if you make your own saber you can sue it better than a borrowed one. i know it isn't really going to make a difference but least you can see who made quite good models and who didn't. I don't mean super technical lightsaber handles in the game to make. But all the saber handles are in 3 bits where you have a choice for top middle and bottom. all look a bit different but join up in game. this is a simple solution but an extra great touch.

Well personally I was thinking more of a hilt selection screen besides the saber colour selection screen, LEC could recreate a bunch of classic saber hilts that were seen in the movies and a bunch of new hilt designs and such. Instead of having to fiddle around with 3 different parts of the hilt.

I would like to see customisable handles......but even if there arent, it wont matter because there will be dozens of mods with the feature anyway. One thing I want everyone to work on will be a double bladed lightsaber that acts like a lightstaff and not just another blade comming out of the bottom of a lightsaber

But then it's jsut default and not really your own, is it?
(tall story but makes sense) Say you kick ass at jk2 and say you a cool match for you hilt, people, in a way would make it your trademark. not jsut a stupid thing that anyone can pick ,sure you can copy but that's jsut copying :)
And also it makes it more like a real jedi making your own saber.
Oh yeh answer aswell because that will make raven mroe liekly to implement it.... it's notl iek it's hard to implement it.

Works for me. More stuff to customize is good.

sounds fine to me...it will be a nice change from everyone having the same hilt like in JK

BTW this is Belgirion I just made a different name

Picking a hilt skin, like picking your player skin and saber color, would be a great idea.

I'd rather have something like that than having it so that there is only one handle skin (so a mod would replace ALL handles in the game, not just your's).

I liked how in JK you could change your saber blade skin (since it's just an animated texture on the polygonal blade) to any texture in the game, thus making it possible to customize your saber (and you had thousands of choices). I'm guessing JK2 probably won't have that feature, but with modding, and with the possibility of auto-downloading (and the files should be tiny for saber hilts) it could still be done. More options to personalize the elegant weapon the better I say.

Good point.. well then.. perhaps they should create a tool that lets you easily create a completely personalised hilt. (including switches & knobs, general shape and even more stuff stuff) Just an idea ^^"

OK ... as a SP person I posted as 'don't know, don't care' ... but I can see it being a 'nice touch' for MP gamers - you know, the type of little thing that gains good-will?

It would be a good idea for mp to give your character a personal touch. But for sp im not sure.

Has there been anything official said about lightsaber handles, one way or the other?

02-25-2002, 07:14 PM
nope. And it really doesn't matter to me.

Definitely. As has been expressed, the more options the merrier.

Plus, the hilts are going to play a more noticable and visually splendid role this time around, to the point where it appears as though it will be easy to determine one hilt from another.

Other than pride in lightsabre skills, the other bit of pride a Jedi often shows is in the crafting of his elegant weapon, right down I'm sure to the ripples in the hilt. As you all know, the construction of a lightsabre is very much a Jedi rite of passage.

Varying hilts would allow users who don't use mods to play more into this tradition themselves if they so desired.

You'll probably be able to edit kyles and make ur own...but others won't see it....but it would still be cool.

I'm happy just having a light saber so I really don't care if they do. The color shoice is good enough for me.

I would love completely customizable sabers. Whip out 3DSM or Gmax and craft the shape of your handle (within a set size of course), then skin it and whack it into a folder and choose it ingame. Others would get it automatically ingame like half life custom tags.

Sounds good in theory. However, for a moderately complicated hilt model/skin, the filesize would be too big to stream during play and still keep a decent ping on 56k. I have absolutely no experience with 3DSM or Q3 editing, but im guessing the filezise would be 200-500k. Otherwise the skin would have to be 256 colour and limited to say 256x256 (which is probably huge for something so small.. but anyway).

The other problem is that lightsaber hilts are so small ingame, that the only time you would be able to identify someone by it was when they chopped your head off. Still, it is quite a lot bigger compared to jk, and this feature would be welcome. Of course not on retail release, but in a patch 1 or 2 months down the line. And, after playing Starcraft and Diablo 2 for so long, I see patches as a way to add features planned but were cut, or gameplay balencing, with bug fixing as a mandatory but less important part of the patch... Blizzard are so good with their patches, they are always so small and change so much, unlike Valve, who seem to make 100mb patches that fix 2 bugs and not much else.

Oh yeah, thanks Dan, you reminded me. If raven don't support complete control over saber colour (RGB values...) heads will roll. I really want to have a different saber colour to everyone else, not just the standard red green yellow blue purple orange etc. Without the ability to change the saber to a texture (because its not a texture anymore... or is it?) we need other ways to modify our colour. A brightness scale would be cool as well, so you can blind your opponents with your uber bright saber, or go evil looking with a dull one.

It won't make a difference anyway, youll have different saber colours so why have a different hilt, plus when your playing your hardly going to notice anyway

02-26-2002, 06:53 AM
Yes, I'd say it's a good idea to be able to pick a different Saber hilt. The more options the merrier, in my book, and anything that helps to totally customise your character would be welcome. :)

I don't mind if it's MP only, either...because even if you don't play online, you can still see your customised character in a bot match this time around. :)

I don't care so much. It's not that I wouldn't want a customizable saber hilt, I just wouldn't notice or mind if you could or couldn't.

Yes it would be a nice *cough* touch *cough* but... really, I don't think that Raven or Lucasarts would bother to implement that function. You all will have to rely on mods and small little Downloads :p

Then again... it would be fun if a 'program' rather a mod, a program that would aid you/someone in making a fully custom Saber Hilt and Saber Blade - now there's a thought!! :D

Having more options at your hands to control is much better than letting other people decide for you, ie: mods.

Then again... keep dreaming *sniff sniff* :(

ya ya, good-luck to you all - I can't wait to get onto the battle-arena.

Cheers ;)
