You will probably be able to start a dedicated server from within the game or from the start -> programs menu in windows.

Ps. good idea, these additions to the forums!

Welcome to the Jedi Outcast Dedicated Server Administration FAQ. As you find answers to the existing questions, and have new good questions to add, please post to this work-in-progress.

Good idea.
Let's hope Raven people answer some of this questions here, or release good documentation with the game.

I'll see if I can get you some answers on some of those... though many of the answers will be identical to Quake 3/Elite Force...

thanks

I'll tell server administrators here to use Elite Force as a reference for the server requirements.

Is there going to be Unix/Linux support for the dedicated server? I sure hope so, Unix >>>>> Windows for server performance.

Here's what I've found so far:

You CAN run dedicated from the game, but for those of us who don't have a 3D card in the box, that's impossible. To run a dedicated you have to add the

"+set dedicated 1"

tag to the jk2mp.exe shortcut.

One problem I found is that it still requires the CD when it's running dedicated! Don't understand that one. This is all using Windows 2000 Adv. Server.

If you run a server from the game, you can go into the "base" directory and look for the "jk2mp.cfg" file. This file as a list of the commands it loads. I would say look through that file and find tags. A lot of them are Q3 tags. Need a map list too.

i really need the full server command list, such as ban ip couz there are some annoying souls out there f**king with my servers

and how to get a player list of all connected players

to run a dedicated server do somethin like this

put somtin like this in a shortcut
"c:\blab\bla\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec config.cfg

where the 2 means Internet dedicated

but i havn't got it working yet

i hope i get some help here, ive tried to put together a cfg of all the server commands in my cfg but it doesn't work

grrr

well i hope this faq can help me as soon as it gets filled

edit: i just made a discovery!

http://www.planetquake.com/quake3/q3aguide/console.shtml

check that link there are some nice q3teamarena commands, should be something like the jk2 commands

I can finally get the dedicated host to run from the command line using:

"E:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec dedicated.cfg+set

The Dedicated.cfg I copied over from EF and modified the map rotation....

But....while the server has launched to the dedicated console screen, and the game has initlaized and started, I see the following every time it attempts to send a heartbeat to the Raven master server:

NET_SendPacket: WSAECONNREFUSED

Is that why I can't see my server in the server list?

Here's my dedicated.cfg that I brought over from EF:

well try to add this command

seta sv_master1 "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

before the gamespy server

should work :)

and thx for the cfg it really helps me

Rats, I thought you were onto something. Same error after it sends the heartbeat to masterjk2.ravensoft.com.

I wonder if I need to add a few things to the cfg in terms of game type and JKO related items. I'm surprised Raven hasn't posted a basic standard dedicated.CFG file to get us started. Or did they and I'm just out of the loop?

rickard64

well ive made a new cfg now that should be working but isn't...
everything starts up and seems to work fine

it even says sending heartbeat to masterserver "raven...."
but when i look for it in the ingame browser it won't list my server
very odd....

i added a few lines that were in my mp cfg to.

this reply is big i know, sry

nevermind...this post is obselete...I answered my own question :p

see below

TheNerfHerder

Is there any way to disable SPECIFIC Force Powers in mutliplay duel mode?

Our dedicated server wants to keep e.g. Jump, Push, Pull, Saber Throw, but dump: Drain, Lightening, Heal, Mind Trick, etc.

Anyone?

Hanging P

Ok, I just got my friend to check for me, and he says he did find my server on the master list. So here's my server.config if it helps anyone at all;

set net_ip 24.222.182.144
set net_port 28070

set sv_hostname "www.grammarrangers.com"
set sv_maxclients 16
set sv_zone FFA
set sv_timeout 15

set sv_master! "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

set rconpassword *******
set timelimit 15
set fraglimit 30
set logfile 1

set g_motd "Computers are cool, but ****ing suck too"
set g_gametype 0
set g_forcerespawn 0
set g_weaponrespawn 15

// Map Rotation
set d1 "map ffa_bespin ; set nextmap vstr d2"
set d2 "map ffa_deathstar ; set nextmap vstr d3"
set d3 "map ctf_bespin ; set nextmap vstr d4"
set d4 "map ns_hideout ; set nextmap vstr d5"
set d5 "map ns_streets ; set nextmap vstr d6"
set d6 "map imperial ; set nextmap vstr d7"
set d7 "map ctf_imperial ; set nextmap vstr d8"
set d8 "map yavin ; set nextmap vstr d1"

Ok, notice I used this line that one of you guys suggested;

set sv_master! "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

But also notice that I DID NOT use the other ones (gamespy, q3). So maybe the fix is only using ravensoft as the master? Really not sure, but that's the only change I made, and it works now ;)

To launch the game, i just made a shortcut to my desktop of the jk2mp.exe This is what my command line looks like;

"C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

I hope any of this helps. I know what a pain in the ass it can be to not get a server up and running.

For some reason I just can't set a password on my dedicated server, it's got no 3d Hardware so I can't bring up the interface.

I've got:

seta g_needpass "1" in my dedicated.cfg (made from the posts here)

but it keeps staying as g_needpass "0"

I try and change it "inflight" and it says it's read only.

Why won't it it read g_needpass "1" from my cfg file and set it!

HELP!!! Tearing my hair out here.

seta rconpassword "!" - What is this by the way?

it should be

seta rconpassword "whatyouwant"

the rcon is for remote administration
so you could actually launch the game and put
rconaddress <serverip:port>
and then
rconpassowrd <yourpassword>

then you do whatever you want for example changing map

rcon map duel_bay

then the server changes map

simple isn't it?

To set a password for the server (aka private server), you need to use the g_password variable:

seta g_password "mypass"

I'm starting to rip my hair out. By default, I have a pw setup on the server

g_needpass "1"
g_password "whatever"

it works....BUT..what i want to be able to do is rcon while in the game and disable password when i feel like letting pubs in.

it won't let me alter needpass beacuse it says its read only, and setting g_password to "" won't work.

any ideas? can i not disable the pw from within the game?

What's the trick to getting a server to show up in the in-game browser?

I have masterjk2.ravensoft.com listed, and the heartbeat is being sent, but neither I nor my friends can view it. The server is behind a firewall with only UDP 28070 open to the server. My friends can add the IP address to their favorites and connect to it just fine. I just can't see to get it to list in the browser.

Are there any other ports that need to be open?

I have the exact same problem Thistledown, it's driving me nuts.

I have seta sv_master1 "masterjk2.ravensoft.com" in my cfg, but won't show up in the in-game browser for my friends, but they can add the IP manually and play.

hey is there any standard ffa like the ones u get in the game using the gui config things out there for a cfg file with a full ffa maplist and all default settings? cuz im having alot of trouble here :( that is getting a dedicated ffa server with everything default running from command line :(

I am setting up a couple of duel servers on my machine, but I've run into 1 small problem, I can't get them to advertise at all. I also have an RTCW server running which advertises fine, and uses a very similar set up with .cfg files. The one thing I've noticed on this forum is in the command line some people are not specifying a port, where as others are, and there seems to be variety in how people are setting up their servers. I added in the master server line but no luck, I can't even join the game by IP. I've tried adding the IP to the command line, leaving it out, changing the port, several different things but no luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

try writing it like this;

set sv_master! -- exclamation point?

Tried it, still doesn't show.

The funny thing was that Thurs. night it was advertising, and it stopped Friday after I started messing with the config, so that wouldn't surpise me.

It's a Red Hat Linux server, behind another Linux server, using port forwarding to open all the ports that Kenn Hoekstra has detailed.

If it worked Thurs, but not Friday with the default .cfg, and did advertise then, so I can't figure out.

The .cfg file is set to:

set sv_master! "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

I start the server with:

screen ./jk2ded server.cfg +map ffa_bespin

I'm stumped.

Any more tips are appreciated!

I think that sv_master! should be set to sv_master1 :)
I noticed that when i copied the config file, changed it to sv_master1, and my server worked.

There is no problem with the raven master server, its the gamespy one provided earlier.
master0.gamespy.com:27900 is the STV Elite Force gamespy master! Hehehehehe

Someone asked earlier what rconpassword is.
Rcon is a tool you can use to administrate a server when its not running on your PC. When you are connected to your server, you can do this:
Press Shift + `(underneath Escape)
Then type this:
/rcon WHATEVER-YOU-SET-RCON-PASSWORD-TO-ON-THE-SERVER map ctf_bespin

If you typed the pass right, this should change the map to ctf_bespin.

Can someone explain the:

seta sv_privatePassword "******"
seta sv_privateClients 2

varibles to me...does that allow you to save spots on the server for specific people that have a "private password"? If I already have the server password protected (seta g_needpass "1") can I also have the private password for other reserved spaces? Thanks!

The 'seta sv_privatePassword "pass"' & 'seta sv_privateClients 2' reserves 2 slots on the server so the player slots shows up as 2 less than the 'seta sv_maxclients' setting.

Also I found out if you change seta g_password "" it remove the join password on the server and sets 'seta g_needpass 0' , so it becomes a public server.

I have my server setup using both password settings, It looks like it should works to me, but as I cannot get my server to show in the in game server browser I have not been able to test it.

PURE SERVER SETTING
This is a new feature in the multiplayer setup screen. If the pure server option is "ON," then all clients must have the identical .pak file the server has. This was implemented to prevent cheating and hacking. Setting up a server with this off will enable any pak file configuration to enter the game. The .pak file is a very large compressed file that contains all of the games assets. Users can uncompress the file using the program WinZip.

But it has the potential in allowing some players to implement cheats available to them, I've seen them in practice, and they are cheats unless all players know it's available and have the equal opportunity to use it. Imagine having a radar screen on your HUD, and able to see where enemy players are behind walls and doors? You're chasing an enemy flag carrier, get to a door only to meet with an exploding rocket fired a second before the door even opened. Now it's a great tool if all the players have it, and the playing field is level.

Running sv_pure 1 protects you, the gamers, from hacked pack files and cheats that are capable via pack files. The sv_pure option works like this: if it's turned off, any pak file is visible that the client has; with sv_pure 1, however, only the pak files located on the game server are allowed on that particular server, so if you want your favorite HUD replacement available to you in game see if the server admin will load it to their baseq3 directory. Otherwise the custom HUD is rendered useless. However players with the HUD can still join and play. Since the latest point release you no longer will get kicked back to the main menu if you have other pak files; that was a bug in the code that id fixed.

One way to properly deal with this entire issue, is to make the server pure and make available to all players the special paks you will allow them to use. If you like a particular custom HUD and sound effects, put it on your web site for download. The other is to review and install submitted pak files from your player community. (side note: Please be aware, if you're an admin, you'll need to verify that the client pack files submitted to you are legit, and not pak file that may have a cheat in it.)

I have noticed that in the .cfg files you guys have 2 different set commands. I keep seeing either "set" or "seta" . I am a Counter-Strike ded. server runner, and I have never run a quake3 based server. I am trying to set up a dedicated server in win 2000, but I can't get it to load the server.cfg file. Here is what my server.cfg file looks like.

set net_ip "dhcp assigned ip, I have it set to restart the server on an ip update"
set net_port 28070

The way I want to set this server up is to have a passworded server, that has all weapons but saber disabled. I want it as an ffa server, and pretty much its used mainly for dueling (I don't like duel games, too much down time, plus private duel is a lot better without the force powers other than throw and jump) The server I run it on is run through pcanywhere (usually although I can get to it physically) I have the cd in one of my cdrom drives although I am thinking about just putting it into a virtual drive so I don't have to worry about it.

My main problem is that when I try my dedicated server shorcut ("c:\blab\bla\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec config.cfg ), it gives me an error about how it can't load the server.cfg file, then it uses the default server configuration, it ends up being like an 8 slot public server with all weapons. Any idea how to get this working? I am hoping its something to do with the seta and set thing in the server.cfg

Any help is much appreciated,

well this is just an example how to getting an shortcut

make an shortcut, target your jk2mp.exe where ever it lays......

this is an example

"D:\spel\jedi Knight2\gamedata\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

and the server.cfg has to be in your \jedi Knight2\gamedata\base
folder

otherwise it won't find the cfg you specified

and the SETA command is for cfgs

if its ingame you type SET not SETA

got it?

thanks. I just figured out where to put it right before you posted. I though putting it in the base directory would make clients not be able to connect due to a pure server setting, but it doesn't count configs... Anyway I appreciate your explaination of the seta command. I am used to Halflife servers and this particular server set up is a bit different. I think I have it working now...

here is the link:

http://www2.ravensoft.com/jedioutcast/serveroptions.rtf

this is what is there:

Remember you can always launch a dedicated server from the menus.

g_gametype:
0=Free For All
1=Holocron
2=Jedi Master
3=Duel
5=Team Free For All
7=Capture the Flag
8=Capture the Ysalimari

g_weaponDisable:
Nothing is disabled if set to zero. Lightsaber only if set to 65531. The number is the total of a bitfield with 16 bits, each bit representing a weapon.

g_duelWeaponDisable:
Same as above, but only when playing Duel. This is separate because we encourage Duel mode to be saber-only.

g_forcePowerDisable:
Nothing is disabled if set to zero. All force powers are disabled if set to 32767. The number is the total of a bitfield with 15 bits, each bit representing a force power.

g_forceBasedTeams:
If set to 1, then the red team must use the dark side, the blue team must use the light side.

g_maxForceRank:
Number from 0 to 7, going from Initiate to Jedi Master. The higher the rank, the more points to spend on powers.

g_maxHolocronCarry:
Defaults to 3, indicates the number of holocrons that a player can carry in Holocron mode.

g_privateDuel:
If set to 1, then the "engage_duel" key is functional in FFA and Holocron games. Sort of an "unadvertised command", you can brandish your lightsaber, target an enemy and press the key. If he receives the message and presses his engage_duel key, then you are isolated from other combatants and must duel to the death. Saber only, no force powers other than jump. This is the only time saberlock is operational in FFA or Holocron. The winner gets his health replenished and bragging rights.

g_saberLock:
If set to 1, allows saber locking while playing Duel or while in a private duel.

g_friendlySaber:
If set to 1, then team members can be hit by sabers that are idle (e.g. if you walk into a friend). It doesn't affect if the saber will hit players while swinging. Whether it does damage or not is determined by g_friendlyFire.

Many of the rest are Q3 standard.

Included Maps:
duel_bay
duel_carbon
duel_jedi
duel_pit
ffa_bespin
ffa_deathstar
ffa_imperial
ffa_ns_hideout
ffa_ns_streets
ffa_raven
ffa_yavin
ctf_bespin
ctf_imperial
ctf_ns_streets
ctf_yavin

g_autoMapCycle:
If set to 1 the game will auto cycle to the next map from the arenas list.

i'm sure this will help some since the g_gametype for ctf is NOT 4 but is 7

Are screwed....

They have the same exploit as 1.29x of Q3...

It's hard to run servers when you got the ppl out there that know about it taking them down at will.

I know linux is unsupported... but if you guys wish to have alot of servers out there, don't make the same mistake that MoH did.

Well here is the error message I get when I try to launch my Dedicated server with the command

"D:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

When I launch the game it will setup and run the dedicated server fine but I want to add a few more options in then what you can configure with the program. I would assume that the limited edition box that I purchased wouldn't be any different then the normal box. Did I screw up during the install? Thanks for the assist as I have a full T-1 here at the office that is just BEGGING to run server on it...

That was the same error message i got when trying to run the win32 dedicated, only to find out that i had setup to the shortcut to run from where the file was sitting when i d/loaded it. Not from my JediKnight II game folder.

I've never seen that running the MP.exe though? That's new to me!

Change the 'Start In' value of the shortcut to point to the 'GameData' folder.

Example...

"G:\Jedi Outcast"

should be

"G:\Jedi Outcast\GameData"

Sorry to post this in two different threads but I hope this helps some of teh ppl who have been getting strange results running a linux server

On my setup the server has created a hidden directory under my home dir.

It created the dir .jkii and in there was another config file in it

eg /home/users/cenuij/.jkii/base/jk2mpconfig.cfg

I had installed the server to /home/users/cenuij/jedi

This file was also being exectued after my server.cfg which i specified in my startup command line argument. It was also keeping the value g_needpass set to 1, even though i had specified g_needpass 0 in file server.cfg

Hope this helps some of you linux ppl. If your new to linux you'll need to show a full directory listing or turn on the 'show hidden' option in your filebrowser.

back to the question that was asked before.

Can you specify which force powers you want in a duel game. Like we want just basic jump, push, pull saber throw..

and don't want ..drain, grip, lightening, etc..

Does anyone know if we can.. If so how???

Here is the config I am currently working with. All works fine for now, and as I learn more from the forums here, I make changes.

http://www.middlebutton.com/server.txt

any suggestions and or comments are welcome.

I have the server running in FFA mode, as duel got boring last night. Now, force powers are off, sabers only, but u can pickup and carry up to 3 forces and or change them by running over more. (dont know FFA mode, maybe this is FFA is played).

So one guy might have grip, but his opponent might have lightening or something, which I think balances out the abusive force powers. This game type also allows everyone to play and or just duel if they so wish, without waiting in line.

where are you guys putting the "server.cfg"
Cause mine is still not working.. and I don't know what is wrong.

when i add +exec server.cfg it isays it kind find that either

please help.

While I was putting my server up, another server op came into my server and asked if an admin was around. After talking to the individual about his +exec not working, we checked the following:

1) that his command line was similar to this: "C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

2) That the working directory for his server looked like this: "C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData"

3) That the location of his config file was in the base dir. Example: C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\base\server.cfg

After talking to him for a bit, I found out that he had created his config file from a right-click->create->new text file. So, I had him turn off "Hide extensions for known files" in his folder options. His server.cfg file was actually named server.cfg.txt, he renamed the file to just server.cfg, and it starting working. No, I didn't flame him, I run a computer department, and we see things like this all the time.

Hopefully this will help someone else (and I put the 3 items that you should check also).

Ok, first off I'd like to say....isn't this supposed to be a FAQ? If people have questions, they should be posted in a separate thread below so that someone with the answer is more likely to spot it quickly. I know that I only visit this thread about once a day...maybe. I spend the rest of my time looking for question threads with 0 replies first and move on to the rest as I have time.

Ok, just to address the post above...I spotted a couple of problems, one of which may have just been a typo in copying it over on your part.

seta url "http://timmyd-shared //missing end quote

seta sv_timeout 15 //I've saw a lot of players get "timed-out" needlessly with this low a setting. Some players just take a bit to load the maps. I personally use 120. I'd recommend no less than 60 unless you're a computer racist and want to punish people with "older" systems. ;)

set g_logSync 0 "1" //Which do you want? 0 or 1? I don't believe that g_logSync0 is a used cvar. use set g_logSync "0" for off and set g_logSync "1" for on

seta g_autoMapCycle 1 //This completely defeats the point of having an admin defined map rotation--which you do. It looks like you are cycling through each ffa map already. So, I think you'd be just as well off to leave this set to 1 and delete the rotation. If you do that, make sure you ignore the next comment. ;)

map ffa_bespin //Again, this starts a specific map and ignores the rotation. If you want to use the rotation, change this to vstr d1

As a side note, you might want to add the following:

seta g_friendlySaber 0

You have g_friendlyfire off, but that's only when you are swinging your saber (or firing other weapons). The above will make it so you can't hurt a teammate by just running into him with your saber. Good luck with the server.

Hello...
Here's my problem, in the HL dedicated server, whenever you type something that isn't a command, it'll either say it's not a command or not do anything. In Q3 based games, when you write soemthing that isn't a command, it'll print it in the server. In HL, to print something on the screen in the server you need to add 'say' before what you wanna say. In Q3 based games, even if u have \ or / , it'll print it.

This is very bad. If for example someone wanna change his rconpassword or password on the dedicated server, now the person makes a mistake and writes paswsord "PASSWORD".... now everyone on the server knows the password because he made a spelling mistake.

If there's a way to fix it by a cvar, it'll be really helpful, if not, then :( ..

Ok here's my problem:

When I have GameSpy up, I can start a pure server and have people playing on it. JK2 brings up a small console on my desktop saying whats going on. I can join my own game from GameSpy, which shows up. Thats all well and good, but if I want to kick a griefer or retard whos messing up the server by being a loser, I want to be able to kick him. I've tried /boot playername etc, but it doesnt work. It just shows up in the console window as me just simply saying "boot playername". How come I don't have admin abilities on my own server?? Please help!

MatrixCPA
04-14-2002, 05:21 PM
First off, are you typing in the server console or the client console? Either way the command is kick or clientkick, not boot. If you are using the server console, you can type status to get a list of players and their client numbers. Then type clientkick # and they're gone. If you're using the game console, you either need to set to your rcon password using /set rconpassword yourpass to whatever you have in the server.cfg (or whatever config file you use) or include it in the command like so:

/rcon rconpass kick playername

Just substitute your specific rcon password as needed. I find it ten times easier to kick from the server console using clientkick. But, that's just my opinion. ;)

How do i find a full list of rcon commands or other console comands for the ded server? Also is there any kind of softwhere to make admins out of like how the half life engine has admin mod? plus I do I set myself up to join my dedicated server and be able to use the rcon commands and no one else? last question....... i have read through everyones server config posting do i put that in the server.cfg or a different file, becuase the server.cfg is the only file i have found to config the server with. I am new to this so sorry for the million questions. Please help though I am trying to make a clan server.

I got people doing the good old colored names and thats fine, but, when I go to kick a llama and the Llama has colored letters, i can type in there name PERFECTLY and it says player not found.

This is via RCON while I'm playing BTW.

Having run into this myself, I found that doing a quick /status to get the offending user's client number helpful. Then just /clientkick # (where # is their client number) and viola, they're gone.

Too bad the status command via rcon doesn't provide a complete list and the server status command has been fubar'd in the win 1.02c binary. Hopefully, it'll get fixed soon.

I have called Lucasarts and tried reading the message boards but still am confused. Since this is a raven game and SOF was a raven game I remember the editing the command line in the exe file but I cant get a server to run to save my ass on here. I was told by the lucas arts people that to turn the DEDICATED SERVER on would mean that you can only spectate and that I had to go through some mombo jombo like the following (The specific UDP ports that Jedi Outcast uses are 28060, 28061, 28062, and 28070 through 28081 (inclusive.)

Can someone give me an idea how to play a store bought copy of this so i can set up a server that IS viewable to others and have them be able to play as well as me. THANKS ALOT FOR ANY AND ALL HELP.

I am very new at dealing with the q3 style dedicated servers...I have delt with the HL dedicated server. I am running the server behind an SMC7008ABR router, I do not know if that will make any difference either way...
I can create the dedicated server through the game, but if I do that no one can connect through that internet.
There has been alot of talk about the server.cfg...I tried that is will not exec the file...

I am wondering...I do not mind setting up the server through the game...I just can not figure out how get it such that people from the internet can connect...
Because I am behind a router, I have routed traffic for port 28070 to the servers local IP...I hope that someone can help me...

It helps if you post your problem in its own thread so it can be replied to individually. For the sake of brevity, I'll just ask a few questions here that may help you. When you setup the server using the game GUI, what do you select for "dedicated"? NO, LAN, or Internet? If you choose anything but Internet, then there's a good chance your server won't be listed in the master server list--of course, if you choose Internet or LAN then you can't play the game without starting up a separate instance of the game.

Has anyone tried to connect to the server via the ip address? If they can connect by ip but the server is not in the list, then it could just be a matter of time before it shows up...assuming you have it set as an internet dedicated server (above). If nobody can connect by ip, then you aren't forwarding the right ports or your router is not compatible with the game protocol. According to Raven, you should have the port the server is set to run on (28070 by default) and 28060-28062 (inclusive). Give those things some thought and then post in a new thread if you are still having trouble.

This may not apply to your problem but, it may help others. It is possible that all the files are in the proper location but are not named with the proper file extension. This can occur if your windows settings are set to hide known file types. The effect is this: you name a file server.cfg but it is actually named server.cfg.txt. Since you are hinding extensions of known file types you do not realize this has happened.

To check this out you will need to open up [Folder Options] from [Tools] menu in My Computer. Once in [Folder Options] select the [Views] tab and select to Display everything available and deselect all HIDE options.

I hope this helps at least one person.

Now don't get me wrong... I am thankful that I can, if I wish, sort through a myriad of posts and compile my own dedicated server manual/faq. But...

Wouldn't it be nice if if someone, anyone, compiled a *real* dedicated server FAQ? This thread, as well intentioned as it is, is not an FAQ or a HOWTO.

Certainly someone out there has compiled enough information to post a reasonably detailed FAQ/HOWTO for dedicated servers, esp with regards to the available options.

I've been searching for a while for this but can't find it. So before I sit down to spend hours searching this forum and compiling my own documentation, does anyone know of a real FAQ or HOWTO for the dedicated server?

I have a question. Please just answer my question, with no flames. I've read through this faq, looked around, and nothing can answer it. I don't care how stupid the question is, I just want it answered please!

How do I make my dedicated server work so people NOT in my LAN can connect to it? It always just sets it as LAN. I have 2 computers, and my other comp only sees it listed on Local, and none of my friends can connect.

Please help.

Your problem may or may not have a simple solution. Are your friends using you ip address to connect? Or is the problem that it doesn't show up in the server list? Are you behind a firewall/router? If so, have you forwarded all the ncessary ports? Are you running the dedicated server binary or the mp game to host the server? If the former, what's your command line and config look like? If the later, are you setting it up as dedicated in the setup screen?

So there is no straight answer? Lame, I'll just join empty servers and have my friends join...
At least on counterstrike it was easy. Just create the server with in game instructions, and it's done. I'm not gonna bother and do all this work just for a server.

Mazuli, if you are behind a firewall you have to find out what your external IP address is so that people can connect to you, you also have to make sure that you choose Internet as the server option when your creating it, default its Lan, and will only show up on your Local area network.

I had an issue where my firewall won't let anyone go threw it so i had to disconnect it, I am running my server from work now on a dedicated T1, cause its the only option i have seeing as I need all 3 of my PCs at home to connect.

Counterstike seemed easy, thats just cause it did everything behind the scenes, and it uses ports that are already open on your router most likely. Doing a tad more research might find your answer.

Well now it shows up on the list for me and other players. Only problem is I'm the only one who can connect. Other people try to join and end up lagging out. So I know it's being listed. Why can't others connect?

MatrixCPA
06-04-2002, 04:32 AM
Do they actually get all the way in and then lag out? Or are they not able to get fully connected? If it's the later, you might check a couple of things. First, make sure they are updated to 1.03 if your server is also updated and vice versa. You might also check to see what you have sv_timeout set to be. If it's low, say below 60, then I'd increase it up to 120. If it's the former, I'd be curious if you are connected first/also. If so, try letting them connect without you. Then, when you connect, if it goes to hell, then you know that it's a rate problem between the server and you as a local client.

Jedi Ginn
06-04-2002, 02:39 PM
Another thing i found, I run my dedicated as a Pure Server, and when someone connects to it with "unpure" pk3s, it tells the client that Server Disconnected right after loading everything, but in my console it tells me that they were disconnected due to "unpure" pk3. Instance, I can't use the spiderman skin, cause its "unpure"(about 3 hours of taking out all my skins and then putting 1 back in, loading the game and seeing what happens)

Something else to look at is router settings. You have the option to set up ACLs on your ports for incomming and outgoing packets. In other words, you can say let ports 208070 - 300000 out, but you never said to let them in, that would explain why your showing up on the primary server for people to connect, but when they try they can't. I still have issues with my Netgear router RT311, I can't use it cause if the issue, its built in to not let any normal ports into my LAN, and i can't turn it off

I am using 1.03. It shows up on the list for me and my friends. I can only join it through local (I read somewhere that that is supposed to happen). They sit there for up to 5 min, with -1 ping, which means they are trying to connect. I tested this with 2 different friends of mine, both have 1.03. Neither could connect. So it isn't the timeout setting, and it isn't the version. I think my problem might be that my IP is 192.168.1.100 (linksys network IP). I deleted the line for the IP on the jk2mpconfig.cfg and then ran the dedicated server twice (to set it back to default) because I read that I should do that. When I set my IP to the other 2 ((my DNS, which doesn't show up to anyone but me when I look at DNS settings) and my "I.P." (I say that in quotes because it's not really my IP, but it's the IP others see due to my router (which I couldn't figure out how to remove), like at www.whatismyipaddress.com), it doesn't work.

Jedi Ginn

assuming your using a BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router from linksys
your router's IP address is(should be) 192.168.1.100. so http into it and do some of the things below

Q. How can I play internet games (i.e. Ages of empire) with the router?
A: Enable DMZ in “Advanced Features” of the web configuration screen. For example, if your computer’s IP address is 192.168.1.102, enter the last three digits, or “102”, in the DMZ field. You may also try using the port forwarding option instead of using DMZ.

DMZ Host (this would be your JK2 Server)
The DMZ Host setting allows one local user to be exposed to the Internet to use a special-purpose service such as Internet gaming or Video-conferencing. To expose one computer, enter the computer’s IP address and click the Apply button. Inactivate DMZ by entering a zero (0).

Forwarding
Port forwarding sets up public services on your network. When users from the Internet make certain requests of your network, the router will forward those requests to the appropriate computer. The router's DHCP function must be disabled to use Forwarding. Forwarding is generally used to set up a webserver, ftp server, or e-mail server on your network.

~To add a server using Forwarding:
Enter the port number used by the server. On the same line, enter the IP Address of the server that you want the Internet users to be able to access.
Configure as many entries as you would like until all of the link entries are filled.
Click the Apply to save the settings

I have the same problem that has been mentioned here. I have set my server up in the DMZ of my linksys router. I see it listed on the internet servers screen on another computer in my LAN. People from the internet connect, but get disconnected after about 60 seconds or so. If I connect to my server from my other computer, the ping rates of other people fluctuate rapidly (from -1 to 300+) then they disappear.

I have built the server on both Windows 2000 Server and XP Professional and both perform the same. The computer is a 1.5GHz w/256 MB RAM. The performance monitor only sees 0.05% network utilization and only 10-20% processor utilization.

Is the cable connection not fast enough for dedicating?
Do I need to forward the requests AS WELL as put the computer in the linksys DMZ?
Is the linksys router causing the delay?

Any help would be appreciated in this matter. Thanks.

Internet people get kicked every 60 secs or so on a Linksys router if you are using DHCP to assign ip's, turn that off and try it - if you still have problems, get the latest firmware, other than that I don't know :(

That sounds like a sound idea. I will statically assign the address then. I also moved from putting the server in the DMZ to just forwarding the requests and that already works better.

I'm also trying that Jedi Runner application to perform the run, but I think that may cause more problems than needed. It does however, set up some options that are beneficial to use. On the other hand, I think it sets some things up that don't need to be bothered with.

Just my two cents. Thanks for your help...I'll try the static address.

Hi peeps

I have been trying a week to set up a dedicated server and used one of the simpler .cfg's at the beginning of this thread. I first tried it with the jkmp.exe and set dedicated and exec server.cfg.
I could scroll back and see it had exec'd server.cfg but then it seems to restart again using the jkmpserver.cfg? and if i use the jkDed.exe with the same command lines it just sits there after the exec command and doesnt do anything. Also trying both ways I get a lot of 'hitch warnings ??????ms' what are they? I couldnt see them mentioned anywhere here, but going to read through this thread again now

thanks for any help in advance

A hitch warning is the server's way of saying "I had to think about something really hard and it caused some lag for the players". In other words, your cpu was getting maxed out. This normally happens during startup and map changes. If it happens in the middle of a round, your server is overtaxed.

If nobody is joining your server, all you are going to see is the heartbeats being sent. You can always check the server by typing "status" into the console.

tierny
07-09-2002, 04:10 PM
okay yep can see cpu at 99/100% when i get the hitch warning normally when I have just connected using vnc, when its not connected there is no warning, thanks for that :)

the other thing i wanted to know is there a list of commands to set force powers at certain levels? and weapons allowed. I saw the figures earlier for saber only, but how do you add subtract numbers to get weapons/powers at what you want?? and are the values of these listed anywhere?

or am i getting the wrong end of the stick lol.

i would ideally just like full power jump only and no other powers :(

MatrixCPA
07-09-2002, 05:31 PM
One nice thing they added into the 1.03 code was the forcetoggle command. If you just type it without any parameter, it'll give you the current state of each force power and a quick example of how to use the command. It's quite convenient for setting your force powers. Of course, it won't save them to the config file unless you use the write command to force it to do so. One thing to note is that you can't set a limit for each force power--it's either on or off.

The answer to all of your problems is runner.gameadmins.com.

On that site, there is a Jedi Runner which allow you, through a GUI interface, to enter all of the settings you wish (weapons allowed, type of game, players allowed, internet or LAN, maps to use, etc.)

It will also allow you specify server admin pw, player pw, or all pw for the game server. You need to input the password for your remote console password when you enter the game.

Finally, it will also reqister your game with not only the standard game server but also GameSpy's and one other. You may also specify additional servers if you wish.

Once you complete your settings, just click the Start button and it will create the CFG file and run it.

I use it to run my dedicated server. "May the Force Not be with You"

Is anyone using Jedi Runner to configure and run their servers? I am about to use it but have a couple of questions. When I set it up to act as a dedicated server it just opens through a JK2 console screen on my desktop (the same screen that loads the game before you start playing) I had previously been using the dedicated option but using that method the server runs in a DOS-like box much the same way as a HL dedicated server did so are they both the same? And also how do you add JediMod using Jedi Runner?

Thanks for any info you guys can provide.

I'm trying to understand what everyone means when they say create a command within the shortcut but how do you even make a shortcut for jk2? I'm trying to get a server for my clan up but I'm not having much luck. Anyones help on a step by step precedure for this is much appreciated by the MIK clan. Thanx.

I wonder if anybody knows which ports exactly need to be forwarded from the local ip dedicated server to my router in order to make the ded-server official in the masterjk2.ravensoft.com directory. Do i need to change net_ip and net_port?

Thx, in advance .....

In my target box I have "E:\Games\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\jk2mp.exe" +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

Now when I click on the shortcut the MP console comes up and all this writing appears. It looks like its going fine then it stops at

Are you behind a firewall? Failing to resolve the master servers can sometimes mean you are behind a firewall which is not letting the master servers talk to your server. If this is the case, you need to configure your firewall to let jk2 talk with the master servers.

This one should be easy,

1. How do you set the speed. for example ike i want to make everything in my move in slow motion.. whats the command for that?

2. How do I enable cheats?

{Sw}DaRk_SiTh
07-09-2003, 03:14 PM
1 if you are admin type in console \amtimescale n .
n is the number of speed you want (1=normal 2=fast 0.5=slowmo) (TIP: dont set it to low and dont set it to high)

2 in dont know either sorry

Check it out, I'm running a 1.4 server in Linux now the thing is I can connect to it via IP but it's not in the internet list. I've tried the dedicated variable from 0 to 3 and nothing. Any ideas would be most apreciated.
