this makes me think that it must have something to do with the bots models respawning on death option or something, even though it'll freeze whether this is on or off.:jawa :

well i tried this and for me my computer froze even with just me in there. i tried even having no slots availble just one and it still froze.

ok i think the problem is within the cd because i installed the game in a brand new system and it still froze. it also got to the point where i can only play for a few minutes

does anyone that has the new patch still experience freezing?

07-12-2002, 10:25 AM
new patch? where can i get it and how big (Mb) is it ?

07-12-2002, 01:31 PM
the new patch can be found on the home page of jediknigthii.com as for the file size not too sure what it is but on the website it should give you almost all the needed info.

I may have a clue whats the cause of MP freezes and sound loops. when I run dxdiag, it tells me in the network tab that some registry component for directplay is missing or damaged for JK2. I reinstalled the game 2 times but it didnt change.
anyone else have this?

07-13-2002, 07:37 AM
I used to get same thing on my old geforce 2 switched to new drivers tah dah.

07-14-2002, 11:44 AM
ok with new 1.04 and new drivers game still freezes :( still cant figure out why this happens!

07-19-2002, 06:28 AM
Ok, I know this post is a little old, but I assume you guys are still having problems. I've been having these probs myself, so after much experimentation and dog-kicking, here's my solution. First: system specs:

Gateway (diediediedie)
Intel P4 1.4
Visiontek Geforce 3
512 mb Ram
SOundblaster Live Value

What I did in order.
1. Went into sound in control panel, audio, advanced, properties, turn the tab all the wasy down to emulation
2. unistalled Jedi Knight
3. install NVidia Drivers 29.42
4. Reinstalled DirectX 8.1
5. Restarted
6. Installed game
7. Patched game to 1.04
8. Held breath
9. Screamed with delight

Hope this helps some of you, I've been playing for an hour without a freeze, post your response.

This bug is never gonna get fixed. The game still freezes and crashes for me all the time that I almost dont wanna play this game anymore :(

07-19-2002, 07:59 AM
Demolisher, never give up! It took me weeks to figure it out. No two systems are exactly the same, just keep playing around with different settings, it worked for me.

07-19-2002, 09:51 PM
OK, add me to the freezing list as well. Surely LucasArts isn't expecting every game player to be a computer specialist. Most of my readers (I'm a journalist) certainly aren't. I've had my bit of uninstalling, reinstalling, ugrading etc. So where's the patch, Lucas?

07-20-2002, 02:23 PM

I'm still freezing and I don't know if it will help but this updated version of DirectX may be our solution. I'm betting it's not but you never know. Anybody who can, please test this and remember...install your video drivers and then DirectX8.1b.

I had the freezing problem for ages untill I disabled the GLextensions and then it worked fine.
Only now the problems worse. Mobile Forces and F12002 demo are crashing in the same way. Is there any way to solve this. I'm really lost this time...

07-22-2002, 05:32 AM
Well first, let me drop one BIG  F-bomb. The new DirectX drivers didn't work and I'm officially over the limit on frustration. I still think that it's coming back to a heating problem. If anybody's wondering my specs are:

Athlon 1.4 G Thunderbird
Abit KT-7 Raid Motherboard
256 PC133 Ram
Plenty of Fans.
VIA KT-133 Chipset
Windows 2000 Professional
Connection: DSL
PNY GeForce3 64MB Video Card

Did I leave anything out??????? I've honestly tried everything so if anybody can help drop me a note at rio1morales@hotmail.com

Thanks and happy gaming, (F***ing Freezeups)

The thing about Jedi Knight II is it worked for me until I got to like Chapter 18. Now I suffer from the freeze problem too (XP, Asus A7A266, Athlon XP 1800, Creative Geforce2 Pro).

The freezes all started for me AFTER I installed Warcraft III, which incidently sufferes from the same problem.

I'm certain this is not a heating issue, because a) the game crashes too quickly (< 5 mins), b) I have played the game for hours without it crashing, and I can play UT for hours WITHOUT any problems.

I'm pretty certain its a DirectX/Open GL problem.

I know there is the new Q321178 patch (which I have heard doesn't work). But tonight I'm gonna get medieval on there ass and try the Direct X 8.1b (http://download.microsoft.com/download/DirectX/Install/8.1b/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DirectX%208.1b%20Redist%20Package.EXE)

URL is: http://download.microsoft.com/download/DirectX/Install/8.1b/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DirectX%208.1b%20Redist%20Package.EXE

which is a 25 Mb download, but it allegedly patches DirectX to 8.1b. It is a MSDN patch which gaming companies are supposed to incorporate into their games.

07-22-2002, 10:16 AM

now im also freezing..................since ive installed the VIA v4.40 MOBO drivers......

can i reinstall a earlier version?

07-22-2002, 07:53 PM
Okay dudes, I ran the big fat directX8.1b

and then installed the Q321178 (which just patches one file) <-- AMD processors only. This iz the one u need (

The thing is it worked. The thing is it worked. The thing is it worked.

This is DEFINITELY a DirectX Issue. Because for me the problems started after I installed Warcraft III.

The patches from Microsoft worked. Basically you should check this file -----> d3d8.dll: 5.01.2600.0044 English Final Retail 5/6/2002 13:51:28 1180672 bytes <------ That is the version that works for me as reported in Q321178.

Email me if you want more info..... gotta go kill some pathetic storm troopers.

I've a long post a bit after this one but you can just go here to find out more

A link to the files you need (

That's a link to the files that I used, they fixed me up nice.

I can't promise that those links will be there forever, but certainly up for a week or so (depending on traffic).

If possible, use the Microsoft link for the DirectX8.1b patch, their server is about as fast as mine :)

Here are the contents of the above link.. if it pastes nice, cool

The big thaw: stop freezing in Jedi Knight II
These two files ended the freeze in Jedi Knight II.

My freeze was characterised by the following

it happened every time I started a game
always < 5 minutes
both multi-player and single player mode
the freeze manifests itself with a sound loop, and ONLY a hard boot recovers.
My spec
My machine is based on an AMD Athlon XP 1800+, ASUS A7A266 motherboard, Creative Audigy, Creative Geforce Pro

I should also mention that JKII worked fine for me up until about Chapter 18. I installed Warcraft III, and the #### hit the fan. Take from that what you will.

Once I had the freeze problem, the game froze regardless of video or audio settings, 640*480, no OpenGL extensions, sound on low quality etc.. all still crashed.

Note that my motherboard uses an ALi chipset (not Via). I am running the latest Nvdia, Ali and Audigy Drivers. My machine is also upto date accoring to WindowsUpdate.

Post patch
I can now play the game using any settings I like, including EAX etc.,

The two files
I basically ran DirectX8.1b and then the Q321178 patch. To be honest I'm not sure if DirectX8.1b did anything, but run it just to make sure everything is cool.

DirectX 8.1b Redist Package.exe
download: DirectX 8.1b Redist Package.exe

This is from MSDN the original file can be found at http://download.microsoft.com/download/DirectX/Install/8.1b/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DirectX%208.1b%20Redist%20Package.EXE.

The accompanying page is http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?url=/downloads/topic.asp?URL=/msdn-files/028/000/114/topic.xml. (IE only, use menu item labelled "Microsoft DirectX 8.1b Redist Install")

download: Q321178_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe.

Read Q321178 in the Microsoft knowledgebase

I can't remember where I found the actual file (some gaming site). I can't find it on the Microsoft website anymore.

d3d8.dll: 5.01.2600.0044 English Final Retail 5/6/2002 13:51:28 1180672 bytesNote the version number is changed from 5.01.2600.0000 to 5.01.2600.0044

Let me know
you can email me. (Use default subject "Jedi Knight Freeze" or mail will be deleted).

Any ideas on patches for this os?

07-24-2002, 05:33 AM
TO be honest I'ld try them anyway ... haven't really loooked for Win2k .. but as I usnderstand they use the same directX stuff anyways .. don't they???

07-24-2002, 06:43 AM
my JKII will freeze once i install VIA chipset drivers
when i play without those drivers i dont freeze...

just thought it could help

07-24-2002, 10:57 AM
The patch file will NOT execute on 2000. Some error about different platforms. I don't know what I'll do. Raven....Lucas fix this freaking problem or at least let us know that you're trying to resolve the issue.

07-24-2002, 12:19 PM
Hmm I could email you the d3d8.dll (or whatever its called).
You up for that?

07-24-2002, 04:32 PM
well i got a fix (works so far for me)

for win98

first i uninstalled the game| clicked start/run| typed msconfig|
unchecked the box that said load startup groups items. then reinstalled the game. i also left the box unchecked.

this works for me but it is a little risky cause now i dont have my antivirus running at all times but its a small price to pay cause now i can play jk2 for hours now.(hope i didnt curse myself)

07-29-2002, 10:58 AM
Pentium III (or whatever.. i dunno) 1.0GHz
SiS 630/730 (yes, I know it sucks.)
Windows 98

I dont like hardware as you can see..

The patch didnt work.
Whenever I do a hard reboot my screen gamma goes as high as it can get and I have to go into Display etc and press Reset All in Gamma Correction or whatever (I just woke up)

Well, I actually made the game playable for an hour or 2.

I turned off the GL Extensions in Multiplayer and everything is as low as it gets. I have no clue where to get updated drivers for my SiS (yes, it sucks) because the company is lousy and I never wanted this video card.

I tried turning off GL Extensions in single player but that didnt do any good, only allowed 15 minutes of play instead of 2.

If anyone knows where to d/l drivers for my SiS I would be very happy to know :bounce1: :compcry:

07-29-2002, 05:34 PM
http://www.sis.com/support/driver/vga.htm is probably the obvious place to start

oh and here too http://driver3.sis.com/

07-31-2002, 09:45 PM
I used to have the same problem, and after about 3 months of obsessing over it, I figured it out. It is the soundblaster live drivers. To make my long story short, only use the driver from the Microsoft update site, do not use the one from creative labs. BTW, anything using the Quake 3 engine had the same problem, and this, solved all the problems!

08-01-2002, 01:26 AM
Anyone else know if DirectX 8.1b improves the freezing/hanging in Jedi Outcast?
So far, I've only read one post in this topic, which amazes me because the person who made the post gave such a glowing review of the 24.5 meg patch. Anyone want to offer a rebuttal of his warm, happy thoughts? I want to know if this patch will actually make my game stop hanging every 10 seconds.
So those of you who have the 8.1b patch, PLEASE START SOUNDING OFF. (If the patch isn't the wonderfix I hope it is, I won't blame you, the messenger.)

08-01-2002, 02:24 AM
ever since i got the patch it stopped freezing on my computer. but i also got many other patches so i dont know which one it was for sure but i do know the 8.1 patch was the last patch i installed and i would say go for it and download the patch

and as for jcb1bea i wish it was that easy to fix but i installed those new drivers and it still froze but maybe that was just me

08-01-2002, 07:42 AM
I'm pretty certain that there are several reasons why JKII crashes. In my house we have three computers, all running similiar specs..

(me:Athlon XP, Asus board, Audigy, Geforce 2)
(dn:Athlon Thunderbird, Gigabyte board, Live1024, Geforce 4)
(ab:Athlon Thunderbird, Epox board, Fortissimo, Geforce 2).

Even while I was suffering from the crash, the other guys - with similiar configurations - were kicking storm trooper butt, leaving me crying every night, as I could hear the anguised sounds as light sabre cleaved through flesh.

I've looked at a few posts in this thread, and the major point is ... WE ARE NOT ALL SUFFERING FROM THE SAME FREEZE.

I was trying to be quite specific when I described my problem i.e.,
- it happened every time I started a game
- always < 5 minutes
- both multi-player and single player mode
- the freeze manifests itself with a sound loop,
- you can still see the game on your screen
- ONLY a hard boot recovers.

I've seen some people say that their multiplayer works .. that is different from my problem, and this patch might not help.

The reason that I was dead certain that this was a directX issue (and NOT a video driver or sound driver issue), is because JKII worked for me perfectly until I installed Warcraft III. I had already played about 75% of JKII without any problems.

When it stopped working, I mucked about with the drivers, did a system restore, changed video settings, etc etc etc, but nothing worked. The game always froze, exactly like I described above.

I reinstalled XP (normally a cure all for any software related problem).. still it crashed.

I installed the 8.1b drivers but i also installed:

download Q321178 patch (

d3d8.dll: 5.01.2600.0044 English Final Retail 5/6/2002 13:51:28 1180672 bytes
Note the version number is changed from 5.01.2600.0000 to 5.01.2600.0044

I believe that it is the Q321178 patch which does the job.

Read Q321178 in the Microsoft knowledgebase (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q321178)

Obviously the things to take note of here are:

A) This only affects XP (according to Microsoft), so if you are running something else, this is not your problem.

B) This only affects Athlon processors, so if you are running something else this is not your problem.

Microsoft describes the symptoms as:

Under very rare circumstances, games that use the Software Fixed Function Transform and Lighting functionality in DirectX 8.1 may stop responding (hang) while you play a game.

I'm not sure what very rare circumstances means.. is it hardware configurations.. or only when ceratin bits of code get exceuted. For me it wasn't rare, it always happened.

I don't know why I'm wasting time writing this, JKII is awesome, probably the best FPS I've ever played (and I've played a few). I'm certain that the patch helped me and I am confident that if A) and B) and your problem (at top of this post) sounds like mine, then this is most likely your problem.

Good luck guys, and if it worked for you why not tell everyone so we can put this Freezing post to rest.

08-01-2002, 08:43 PM
Thanks for replying, ibballin.
So far that makes two favorable reviews of the DirectX8.1b patch. I'm downloading it myself now.
Here's hoping it does some good.

My game speed isn't any quicker after installing DirectX8.1b. I'm not sure if I should be upset with Raven, or mad at myself. Here are specs for my computer, and conditions I use for the game:

P4 1.6 gig
1.5 gigs RAM
GeForce 3 Ti 200
Hard Drives: 40/60/60/80
Windows XP

1100 x 800 resolution (forget exact number; not at that CPU now)
myself with 12 bots > all custom skins

As you see, I have good stuff, but Jedi Outcast is a resource hog. I can obviously turn the number of bots down, and that'll speed things up slightly, but I thought for sure I'd get better than a 17 frame rate. (On a side note, I REALLY need a cable or DSL line....I play with so many bots because they lack personality. Somehow, I enjoy playing if there's enough quantity to make up for the lack of quality multi-player insults.) If I play with 4 bots, I get about 40-45 KBps, with the numerous "hangs" going unabated. (Grrrr....) I have done some tweaks (like altering the hunkmegs from "64" to "512") and only that other update (Q34324234 or whatever that accompanies DirectX) has added 5-10 KBps. Somewhere along the way I defragmented and reinstalled everything relating to the game from scratch.

I have all the RAM a guy could want. I wonder if I get a P4 2.4 gig if I'll see any improvement? Any thoughts? Theoretically, it would help. But theoretically, I shouldn't have any speed or hang issues at all. I think I may try getting a faster processor next, but its irritating to have games that don't perform like you think they should.

08-03-2002, 05:15 AM
Have you thought about a Geforce 4 .. since money doesn't seem to be a problem for you!

08-03-2002, 03:59 PM
Thanks for the reply, er583.
Which do you think would help me more? Getting the top-of-the-line GeForce 4 to replace my PNY GeForce 3 Ti 200, or getting a P4 2.4 gig processor to replace my P4 1.6 gig processor?

Also, to add to my specs, I have a Sound Blaster Audigy Ex.

Thanks for the tips in advance.

08-03-2002, 06:06 PM
i would replace your video card before your cpu. first i suggest make a post in regards to the geforce 4 and see if its any good and try to see what other people who have, have to say . the video card you have right now is still good and you never know they might comeout with a driver in a week, month, who knows. i say only get it if you truely want it. the geforce 4 is a pretty sweet card though

08-03-2002, 08:28 PM
I went and got it. I'm going to install it before the night is done. I checked out sharkyextreme.com and got the info that I needed. In their newest reviews of the GeForce 4's, they compare Jedi Outcast performance amongst GeF 4 4600s, 4400s, 4200s, and GeForce 3 500 & 200s. The differences between GeF 4 and 3 for Jedi Outcast (as they report it) are amazing. I'll know myself soon enough.

08-03-2002, 10:28 PM
Well, I'm still having problems even after buying a GeForce 4 4600.
Going up against 7 bots, I get 25 fps.
Don't have a clue why the game won't ran fast...I think its the way I have my computer's software configured. My low speed and hangs can't be related to the hardware, as everything is supposed to be top of the line. I've heard SOME soundblaster sound cards have caused problems with this game. Anyone else know of problems between SB Live products and Jedi Outcast? Perhaps are there some key settings in Bios that I'm missing? (I have AGP aperture at 256.)

Windows XP
MSI 6528 LE motherboard
P4 1.6 gig
1.5 gigs RAM
VisionTek Xtasy GeForce 4 4600 128 meg DDR memory
Hard Drives: 40/60/60/80 (2 on mainboard, 2 using PCI card. game installed on mainboard's "C" drive)

Game Settings: 1100x800 resolution, with all settings at "very high" quality level selected.

08-03-2002, 11:02 PM
Well, I'm off for the night. Thanks for being so helpful today everybody.

08-03-2002, 11:49 PM
have you tried updating the drivers for your soundcard? if not try that. so it still freezes with the all powerful geforce4 huh? but i bet the graphics are sweet:D well the only thing else i can think of is try the driveres for that videocard have you tried that? well i dont know what else to tell you other then keep hope alive.

08-04-2002, 01:29 AM
Well, I lied. I'm back. I continued to look around for answers, and I did find something of use.
I read somewhere that if you turn off anisotrophic filtering that the game will not slow down or hang. Truth be told, disabling that filter turned out to solve my herkiness problem! I'm still getting a piss-poor FPS (considering what I have) but I have also found that my problem isn't rare - lots of people have good stuff and have been getting bad results.

Anyway, here's a link for other tweaks of the game:

ibballin, if I had to guess, I'd say its my sound card. By all outward appearances, everything works fine. (All five channels send out sound) but when I go into my Creative Mixer to "test" the speakers, only the front left and front right respond. I've changed the speaker configuration in XP's control panel, checked the inside of my computer, downloaded the latest drivers, and tinkered around in Bios, but still the "test" only has 2 of 5 speakers respond. I read a widespread rumor that says Creative has new drivers on the way in mid to late August. As I have nowhere else to assign the blame, I'll be first in line to download the drivers.

08-07-2002, 11:13 PM
To solve the crashing of JK2, I finally reformatted my hard drive; installed Windows 2000, then Direct X 8.1b, then the latest drivers for my Video card (GeForce4 Ti 4400), but I used the audio driver from WN 2000 for my audio card (Sound Blaster Live Value) and not the software driver that came with my sound card.

I have not experienced any crashing or freezing to date and hopefully not in the near future.

I sincerely hope this may help anyone who are still experiencing crashing or freezing problems.

08-17-2002, 05:26 PM
I am also having this freezing problem. But when I first started playing multiplayer mode I didnít have this problem and I had video setting on highest quality. Now all og a sudden itís doing it almost everytime. Only game that it doesnít freeze so far is duel games. Maybe it has something to do with more players?

I tried about every suggestion, installed any latest patch, driver etc. that may help and... nothing. Kept me busy for weeks and I actually learned something, too.

Just another thought. Iím not sure if anyone has suggestive it but I just did a bios update on my motherboard and now game runs fine. BEWARE if you do a bios update read the README file and make sure you have right files etc. you can mess up motherboard if you try to put wrong rom files etc. Good Luck

Can you tell me more about what used to be you freezing problem? I have a sound blaster live and JKII crashes!

Everything locked up when I played online. Game would last about 1 minute before that sound loop would happen then I would have to hit the reset button.

Hmm.... I may have to get a new soundcard, graphics card, or motherboard. or a combo or all of the above :(

OK, after many months, I have made some progress, but not to completion (the game still freezes now and again.)
I bought a new Power Supply and tried it out several weeks ago. The game crashed again, so I put it away.
I got to thinking this weekend that it was power related, so I started pulling the cable out of some of my components. First the second HD, then the CDRW. Then I looked into my Device Manager to see that one of my two NICs (I use Internet connection sharing) was using the same IRQ as the GeForce 2Ti.
So I disabled both NICs too.

I then loaded up JKII and played for over an hour with no crashes!!!
Great, I thought. So I started powering up some devices - crash!
Time to get the trusty 300W P/S again (it doesn't fit in my Micro ATX case BTW! :)
Another long session later, I'm thinking "problem solved".

However, as we all know by now, this problem isn't a simple one.

A couple of tips -
If your game crashes at startup (or often), delete the JK2 config.cfg file before loading the game. (This will mean you have to apply your preferences again. Make as few changes as possible in the config menu - there are suspicions that this can cause instability in the game.)

Look for IRQ conflicts in your hardware settings.

Don't Quicksave/quickload - go through the save and load menus.

Keep well clear of EAX sound!

09-03-2002, 02:08 PM
OK, to put it this way most people have MP crashes, right? well, The MP program is not written very well. Therefore, a combonation of drivers(Sound, Graphics and motherboard) do not work right together on some programs. I have one of the combos that makes some programs freeze. those programs are JKII, Ski resort tycoon and when I play games online (especially 3d ones) they crash, too. If someone asks me, I will go more into detail

My problem is somewhat different, I have freezes and soundloops. Mine are completely random. Anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours. The difference in mine though, is that after I started having jk2 freezing problems, the computer started doing that even when I'm not in jk2. not as frequent but still...

I have 2 computers, I use this one more. the other one is my dad's and that's the one I play jk2 on. (this one doesn't have a 3d accelerator) anyway, I know I have a pentium 3 processer and windows 98 plus.

I think my problem will be fixed by putting in a sound blaster audigy, or a different graphics card!

If this is a sound card issue can I get a few ideas on the best sound to get. Thanks

So I've been frustrated for some time now about all the problems I've been having with JKII and lock-ups.
After wading through reams of info on various forums, talking to friends etc., I got to thinking that my video card was sucking too much power through the AGP slot, causing it to crash (despite having a 300W supply feeding plenty of juice to the PC). The card has an onboard fan. In a thought which seemed to defy logic, I wondered if disconnecting the fan would reduce the power consumption on the card.

So sure enough, in a last ditch attempt of desperation, I UNPLUGGED THE FAN!

To my amazement I had a three hour game playing session on several games (especially Q3-based games) with no crashes!!!

Many people think their cards overheat, but in my case the cooling device was causing an unwanted power surge! I am a little worried that my card may be getting a bit hot, but I'm sure that my PIII 600 isn't taxing it too much.
I also tried to connect the fan to a different power lead by buying an adapter for the power lead, but this only caused the system to crash again. I am going to contact the manufacturer to find out if the card (or at least the fan) is somehow faulty.

I don't know how many of you are having similar power and/or interference problems like mine, but it's definitely one to try.

Yahoo - I'm playing JKII again!!

well , I still have freezes ---not just with jK2 but other 3d games as well. I Just patched windows xp with the new service pack (SP1) and seems like the problem has gotten worse!
I sure would love to know what the solution is..Seems to me its a combination of Windows Xp, nvidia video card, and a sound card issue..Any one have a solution? Please??/lol

its not your nvidia video card, exact same thing with my matrox G400.

Maybe itís the CPU getting too hot. I did notice that my CPU runs a lot hotter while Iím playing JKII. I just bought a water cooler system for my CPU. It dropped from 130 degrees to 85. Played last night and no freeze ups.

I'm getting the freezing/looping problem as well, but only when I try to start a server(just seconds after it finishes loading). I was getting the problem after joining a server, but I turned the option for "wait until death to update" thingy to off, and now I can play online without problems.

This thread was started in March, and although I haven't read every single post, I have read quite a few, and nothing has worked for me as of yet besides the "wait until death" thing. I have all the latest drivers for my hardware as well. It's too bad I can't start up a server. SP on my machine kicks major ass, but I've finished the game.

wow its been awhile since ive posted in this part of the forums. im still getting frezzes all the time. it stopped for awhile though but now its back. i d/l the unreal2k3 demo and it frezzes in the first 2 minutes:( im going to get a new video card soon though. atleast i hope

09-29-2002, 07:46 AM
unreal tournament 2003 demo work fine on my g400 pc, and jk2 freezes in multiplayer

10-19-2002, 08:08 PM
Wow this thread is still around? I haven't played JKII in the longest time, but I'm starting to think it's my computer because other stuff freezes and crashes for me from time to time. Do we all just have messed up computers or something? :(

10-22-2002, 12:49 AM
alright, im getting really ******* angry here.

i just reinstalled jkII cause i heard they finally trashed 1.3 (finally:() and fixed some of the MP probs.

so i reinstall the game (ive formatted since than) and about a minute after entering an MP server with my own bots to practice and check out the new version, i get the freeze w/ sound loop.

i run an IRC server and an FTP server off this box, and fold, while playing 4 hour + sessions of bf1942 and various assorted games. this system is stability tested harcore and has proven itself various times to be stable. i havent had a problem with it in almost 6 months.

now after 1 min of starting jkII i get this freeze. so i cold reboot it, and try again with every process shut off, and no other proggies at all running. BOOM it just finished loading the map and i got the freeze w/sound loop. i have since than tried most of the attempted fixes in this thread to no avail. 15 pages and no word from lucasarts/raven? wtf is this?

400w Antec truepower PSU
XP 1600+ @1.68ghz
Abit KX7-333
512mb Crucial pc2100
gf3 TI200@+TI500 speeds w/WHQL 30.82 det's
SB Audigy with a clean install of the newest drivers and none of the CD stuffs
120gb WD 8mb cache/60gb Maxtor D740X
Leadtek TV tuner
Intel pro 10/100 NIC

thats all that seems relavent. system is modded and has lots and lots of well balanced cooling on the CPU, memory, and video card, and runs every other game, OGL and d3d just fine.

if i dont get a response for how to fix this in a few days ill email raven (or Lucasarts) and tell them i want a refund, end of story

TIA for anyone that can help

is this were some problem in another proggie i would isolate it to be a software error or a hardware error, than pinpoint the software causing it. the system logs show no record of an error with anything prior to the crash, and im totally unable to reproduce it with any other program or game. im not going to change my vid drivers, they are WHQL, and if the authors of the game cant get it to work with the official drivers, than it shouldnt be on the shelves.

10-22-2002, 02:47 AM
its not your video card, mine soundloop crashes and i use a matrox g400

10-22-2002, 05:50 PM
ok, i uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, and it still didnt work, it would freeze with sound loop as soon as it started.

so i disabled EAX.....

and just played an hour online:)

no probs with EAX disabled. my audigy has the newest drivers.

how many people with the problems have a creative sound card?

10-22-2002, 07:29 PM
i have problems when it freezes every time it loads a second map ot loads the first one ok but when it gets to the second map it freezes during loading of the second map even when the progress bar is completed it just wont activate the next map i have installed new drivers and put on DX 8.1 Again to try to make it work but to no avail i have limited games to play now the only way i can get to the next level is if i restart the computer and type the map name into the console and that is annoying

10-23-2002, 12:17 AM
DISABLE EAX i did and it fixed the freezing for me in both SP and MP modes:)

nope didnt work still does that for some weird reason never happened to me before (i got this game on day of release and it worked perfectly then)

so what else could it be?

10-25-2002, 10:05 AM
I've owned JKii ever since release and never had a problem.

My system consisted of the following:

Abit KT7A (ver1.3) - Latest BIOS
1.8GHz XP
Leadtek GeForce 3 - used 23.11, 28.32, 29.42 & 30.82 (all OK)
SB Live (value) - Latest drivers
Windows XP (Prof) - all relevant updates except SP1
JKii - patched to 1.04

I managed to complete the game several times on various difficulty settings. In fact, my 3yr old son loves to come home from nursery and have a blast on MP (honestly). He's not very good, but @ 3yrs, I don't think you guys will need to worry quite yet!

Recently upgraded to GF4 Ti46 and installed 40.71 (beta) and still no problems.

Monday I bought a SB Audigy to add a little more depth to my gaming experience. Removed SB live drivers and rebooted. Installed new Audigy card and installed latest drivers from SB's website. So far so good. Changed the sound options to enable EAX support and away we go!!!

!!!DS was desperate to have a go, wanted to try out his latest trick (crouching - LOL)

hmm - Logic dictates that the last thing changed must be causing the problem. Disabled EAX and away we go - NO FREEZING and one very happy son.

Strange thing is - Single player doesn't suffer with the same fault. I'm no expert on games so I can't figure out why MP freezes while SP doesn't. I'll leave that up to you guys. But at least you've got another story to add to this ever-increasing thread

Hope it helps

I finally got this game, wanted for a while but never had the moeny to spare.

Great game, but Multiplayer, I found, would freeze every ten minuites. Finally found this thread and the EAX tip worked, thanks a lot for telling me. ::Misses the sound, but enjoys the game enough not to care::

Plus this thread needs a bump, should be a sticky if you ask me.

01-14-2003, 06:47 AM
Holy f***!
This thread is still going? :D
I was the first one to post the EAX fix, w00t :D

01-16-2003, 10:55 PM
the EAX disable fix DOES NOT work for me. Why wont they fix this game ?!?! bloody tip rats .

01-17-2003, 12:42 AM
ok, everyone still having this problem, try this.

delete the jk2mpconfig.cfg from your base directory. then try it. i havn't had a freeze yet.

( jk2mpconfig.cfg is for MP, delete the jk2config.cfg file if u have problems with SP )

01-20-2003, 04:55 AM
AHHGHH forget that, i still have the sound loop error.

this bites.

i have tried:

- deleteing the jk2mpconfig.cfg file
- installing the original divers that came with my sound card (SB Live)
- disabling EAX
- reinstalling
- disabling my sound card and using onboard sound

nothing works, sometimes the game just exits for no reason, and now i get screen corruption occasionally as well, but it's usually the Sound Loop.

every other game works flawlessly, my computer runs purrrfectly (for once in my life), and this game blows out every time.

what garbage.

01-25-2003, 12:24 AM
It seems there may be more than one cause to the looping problem. After several months of frustration and trying every suggestion on this thread, here's what finally fixed it for me.

New power supply for my PC.

It seems that my cheap power supply that came with my cheap case (I had built my own computer) wasn't up to the job even though it was rated at 300W. The last 3 games I got had similar problems to Jedi II; hangups, usually with sound looping. I began to suspect power supply problems when troubleshooting the same looping issue with Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I bought a 430W Antec power supply, and every game I was having trouble with now works flawlessly, including Jedi II.

Worked for me, YMMV.

01-25-2003, 01:18 PM
Hmm. I have the latest dets, latest DirectX. Everything's updated. Windows 2000 SP 3. No updates left at WindowsUpdate. Bios is up2date.

The game even worked before..

Now it locks up, and the sound loops.
When JK2 starts up, it does the Lock'n'Loop during the intro movie. Pressing Escape or starting in Safe-Mode skips that. Then, when starting a new game it's back. LnL. After skipping THAT, the 'in-game' intro of Kyle and Jan works fine.. Until Mon-Motha appears.

The game works fine from that point, until I try to load the quicksave (which it doesnt, because of the LnL bug). Oh, it's also quite odd that it LnLs in the Load screen. It constantly LnLs when you turn off GL Extensions.

It's just.. weird.

I did all the 'fixes', and more. Nothing works. JKII is the only game that bugs, everything else just runs stable and all. EAX is turned off..

01-28-2003, 05:28 AM
yep, this game was rushed. all i can hope for now is that they take the time to perfect a starwars game that is based during the OT and lets you play luke from ANH to ROTJ and lets you choose if you are good or evil.

the new starwars game from the E3 video looks FAB.

02-21-2003, 10:11 AM

This might just fix it.

02-24-2003, 07:04 AM
damnit, i was just about to goto bed and i read this...now ima have to install the damn game and test it out...

ok, this is it, you know, if THIS doesent work i'm done, you hear me, DONE !

02-24-2003, 07:57 AM
it took about 20 minutes to freeze, which is quite a while for me.

so i suggest everyone does try this out. just because it didn't work for me doesnt mean it wont for you :)

my SP has always worked fine, its just MP

oh well, thanks for the info anyways, i want to know ALL the ways people have solved this problem.

keep up the good work.

03-08-2003, 01:50 PM
Glad I could help - hope you get it fixed forever ^_^

03-12-2003, 04:15 PM
I bought a 430W Antec power supply, and every game I was having trouble with now works flawlessly
Excellent move! So few people understand the need for a powerful, quality power supply and for top-quality memory.

I know alot of people are suffering from problems related to the JK2 software but I'm sure there are just as many having problems due to the generic crap they have inside their case. A couple of guidelines from a part-time systems integrator:

- Memory - go to the Crucial web site, find your system or mainboard and buy the memory for it from Crucial. Don't buy generic or PNY memory or anything they sell at Best Buy or CompUSA.

- Power Supplies - just make your decision and life easy by buying an Antec power supply of AT LEAST 350W, preferably 400W.

Yes, there are much cheaper parts but you really need a quality PSU and memory. There are many other brands but if you're not an experienced system builder, then going with Crucial and Antec is most likely your best move.

Infinite sound loop freeze-ups can occur on any system playing any graphically intense 3d game. As such, it doesn't make sense to blame the "typical" sound loop problem on the game. The best solution I've found is to get a beefy, high-quality power supply.

I haven't been here in since God only knows how long but I pulled JK2 off my shelf as I just got a Radeon 8500LE to sort of replace my GF3 Ti 200. On this card, just as it did on the GF3, the game runs flawlessly. I just wish the damn guns would shoot straight!

03-29-2003, 01:26 AM
I HAVE FIXED IT :) :) :) :)
all i had to do was upgrade to a GIG of RAM and purchase a brand new 80gig HDD. now ity runs fine....ecept i cant increase or decrease the brightness  other than that i have solved my freezing problem, the biggest downside was the $340AU it cost for the upgrade.

(and no i didn't upgrade JUST to play JK2 my old hdd died)

I also freeze! BUT I found out when i freeze. Whenever someone besides me thrwos their saber and then i freezes right when the saber comes bask to them. when i do it nothing happens! it also happens when i dont see the saber being receved. oddly enough i also have the geforce audigy sound card and win xp

03-31-2003, 05:44 AM
tried everything above didn't help me.. game runs normally for a while.. how long seems completely random, at times it starts continually freezing as soon as I start, and sometimes I can play like 20 mins before it begins.. wierdest thing is, once it starts, the freezing stops when I pull down the console, but when I put it up again it immediatelly starts freezing again.

03-31-2003, 10:13 AM
What memory do you guys have assigned to JKII?

com_hunkmegs in the console.
I personally have 180MB for JKII, while I have 512MB system RAM.

03-31-2003, 05:37 PM
figured out the game runs fine in windowed mode aswell :p oh well it'll do :)

04-01-2003, 02:33 AM
"com_hunkmegs" is: "64" default: "64"

i have a GIG of RAM and it doesnt freeze
when i had 512 of RAM it DID freeze (i also had a different HDD but all else was the same)

are you suggesting that we can alter this number and thus prevent a freeze?

04-07-2003, 12:51 PM
seta bot_nochat "1"
seta cg_noVoiceChats "1"
seta cg_noVoiceText "1"

I haven't had a freeze in botmatch since I started using these cvars. Add these to your autoexec.cfg.

Make this thread longer? anyway i have 1 question for everyone who freezes, This is DO YOU FREEZE WHEN SOMEONE ELSE DOES A SABER THROW. the freezing on my comp happens right when the saber hits the hand and it doesnt freeze when i do saber throw. and if this happpens to all the freezing people then we might be able to figure someting out by knowing what causes it. Bub i dont know im just wondering!
