Rhett,

Twice this has happened, i sign on aim, and you sign off like a minute after. Yesterday i was telling you something, and you completely ignored me, and just a second ago, i politely said, 'hey', and you signed off. Am I being overly polite or something? Or is your stinkin computer messing up on you??

Try reinstalling the latest version as well as getting all the updates for Windows and any Utilities (like norton) as you can. Helped with mine. Now only crash when i try and play mp3's, have 8 browser windows, yahoo, icq, msn, and aol messengers running...

This whole problem started when I tried installing a voodoo5 on my comp. I didn't find out until later that voodoo5s have terrible problems running on k6-2s. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/frown.gif
Some how some dll files got screwed up to.

I installed Windows ME and that got rid of some of the blue screens and lockups but I still have pretty bad problems. And to top it all off, my brother just bought his girlfriend a brand spanking new computer while i'm sitting here with a box o' crap.
To make it even worse, My brother has like 35 cpus!

I calculated the odds that this would work versus the odds that I was doing something incredibly stupid...and I went ahead anyway.

Hey, Boba Rhett, you need some cheering up...so read about my PC woes, and feel free to laugh...

9 months ago I bought myself a new PC with the following specs...

Ahtlon 800Mhz
NVIDIA GeForce 256 with 32Mb DDR
DVD-ROM
CD-RW
ORB drive
256 Mb PC100 SDRAM
40Gb HDD
19" monitor
Soundblaster 1024 card
56k V90 modem

Sounds like a sweet system, yeah?

The first day I put it together, it came up with an error message. A day later it crashed. Out comes an engineer to replace the HDD and MoBo.

Reinstalled everything. But it wouldn't play my DVD films. Went to play some games in glorious D3D and OpenGL...forget it. Kept locking up.

They took the PC back into the workshop. They replaced the HDD and MoBo again, and did a complete reinstall their end. They sorted the DVD problem, but not the problem with the games. Anyway, it came back from the workshop a couple of weeks later with damage to the case, the MoBo ports...and I was like, through the roof.

So out comes the engineer again, and replaced the HDD and MoBo yet AGAIN...

So, for two months I had no PC at all for work or play...and it's never played a game in D3D or OpenGL without locking up at some point since then.

It get's better...

Just before Christmas, the sound faded out, then came back, and so on until earlier this month, the PC died on me again. It's now back in the workshop...

It turns out the PC had a faulty PSU, they've replaced the HDD again, and they've had to take out the internal ORB drive because it was creating problems all of it's own.

So don't worry, you're not the only one having problems...

Anyway, as a footnote, I've heard there are some real issues with Windows ME, especially with Media Player 7. I've stuck with Windows 98 SE until I can afford to get Windows 2000. I think Windows-XP activation key sucks...especially in light of all the hard disk crashes I've had...so I won't be upgrading to that.

My best advice is try installing Windows 98 if you have it, or can get it, and see if that solves some of your problems. I know what it feels like to have PC lock-ups every single day - even though mine were for another reason.

It would be best to start from a completely *clean* system - i.e., scrub the hard drive with a full format, install Windows 98 etc. and all the basic drivers for your kit. I will assume you know how to do all that, and how to back up some of your most important files before you begin. It's worth a try.

Good luck, and may the Force be with you...
