I have to admit this will make me sound like a n00b, but I dont understand a lot of the lingo that is used on this, and other forums on the web. I have figured out a few like brb, n00b, WTF, lol, IMO, and a few others, but there are still a lot I dont know. I've seen things like l33t and w00t and have no idea WTF they mean. I dont use chat rooms and dont usually post on forums (except this one) so I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to this stuff. If anyone can tell me of a good website that explains all these terms I would appreciate it. I get confused easily enough with out all those crazy words :confused:

actually, many believe w00t to be derived from a sound in quake... the jumping noise i believe....

but its all speculation.

the lingo has been around for years... since early irc times i believe.

thing like afaik- as far as i know
imho- in my humble opinion

but things like stfu- shut the frog up and rtfm- read the frogging manual have originated later through gaming and uncontrollable anger caused by dieing a lot in game.



post any net acronyms or terms and we'll explain them...

btw... for anything obscene... use something starting with the same letter, but not obscene, such as frog, or spit. :) **** can be hard to understand..

I actually think I know how all this lingo started, especially the stuff that replaces letters with numbers. It started when I was in the 5th grade and a friend of mine figured out how to write boob on his calculator (8008). There were a couple of other words he wrote but I dont remember what they were off the top of my head. I'm thinking that might have been one of Al Gore's kids. After all, Gore invented the internet so it makes sense that his kid would invent the lingo :).

usually the vowels are not taken out of every word, but out of single word, which makes the whole phrase still understandable.
also, things like FYI or HYT (my all-time fav!!) are not just phrases freed from vowels

Thats quite a list StormHammer. Most of those I dont think I have ever actually seen online but know where to look up their meaning now if I do. I have used some of those outside the web lik MYOB and ASAP. The only ones I can think of that you missed are
