View Full Version : Your thoughts on JK2 positional sound

So what is JO using as a sound API? It's not EAX, A3D, etc. And there's no hardware acceleration setting under Sound in the menus (I'm pretty sure).

I'm not using the OpenAL thing just basic JO sound. I've noticed that the positional sound works well in JO. I use a 2.1 system (no rear speakers) so I can tell left and right but not front and back. When I was fighting Tavion, I could actually tell that she had appeared far behind me. I spun and there she was off in the distance. I don't usually experience that level of positioning with my 2.1 system.

Just FYI, when I start JK1, my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz throws up the Sensaura splash, when I start JO, it doesn't.

Anyone have any thoughts on JO's sound? I havent' seen it mentioned that much.

What you are probably noticing is doppler.

I think it just uses the limited DirectSound protocals...

You can enable EAX by typing s_UseOpenAL 1 in the console then restarting the game. I have 4 speakers and the EAX sound is awesome with my Soundblaster PCI512.
