Here's a question:

Given the choice between real life, and a simulated SW universe, which would *you* choose?

Picture this, in 10 or 20 years time we could be able to have TIV, or Total Immersion Videogames. Similiar to those found on the BBC TV show "Red Dwarf". Your body would be connected up to life support mechanisms, and your brain would be wired into a mainframe and a network of mainframes to form a truly immersive universe, indistinguishable from real life.

I think that videogaming is progressing towards this level of reality - what do you think? and would you give up real life for life in the Star Wars universe?

Of course I'd give up my real life for Star Wars!
Man, to wield a lightsaber, to fly an X-WIng. Hell, being a stormtrooper on some backwater planet where nothing EVER happens would be good enough for me!

Would I want to live in the SW Universe!?!

HELL, YEAH!

In this Universe, I'm going to be an SF writer, just cause that's the closest thing I can find to actually being there.

Given a choice, I'd much rather be a starpilot. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/biggrin.gif

So basically videos games will BE "The Matrix" in 2020, that what you're saying?

I dunno, if I lived in Star Wars-Land, what would I spend 1/16th of my entertainment budget on? That would take some of the fun out of it. Plus I don't wanna keep hearing people say "I have a bad feeling about this" every other second.

I suppose you *could* say it would be like the matrix, but then I don't envisage it being created by a malevolent race of AI computers hell-bent on keeping the human species enslaved. Mind you, to listen to some people go on, videogames have been doing that for years now.

You made a good point there, i myself would make sure they didnt include the phrase "there's one less rebel" in the game.

Much as I enjoy Star Wars, I prefer a meaningful reality to a meaningless fantasy.

Fantasy is the most extraordinary figment of the human imagination. I think pursuing a fantasy is what makes life worth living, as long as the fantasy itself holds some significant meaning. I don't see any correlation with Star Wars and a better form of life, so Wiz is correct in that sense. But I wouldn't rule out all fantasies :O)

I'd choose Star Wars. Have a whole galaxy to explore? Meet hundreds of different alien life forms? That's got my vote!

Pity I won't be around to see it happen in THIS galaxy... http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/frown.gif

Trouble is, I'd get sick of Star Wars, then where would I be? ; )

Yeah, people already spend too much time playing Everquest and Half Life: Counterstrike, so they probably don't need to live in Star Wars Sim-Land (tm).

It might be cool to visit such a place for a weekend, but not to live there permanently.

Sick of the SW universe? I don't think so somehow - you could spend your entire life on a planet raising crops, or run a noodle stall on Coruscant. Also- real world/fantasy? how do you define real? (insert matrix scene here). http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif

Well "real" being within our factual universe and composed of matter and/or energy (or plasma). Something that can be detected or measured with our natural senses or with logic (empirico-rationalist definition). A spiritual world? I'm not answering that question. ; )

"Fantasy" being a fictional "non-reality" that we created ourselves.

I don't know about you, but if I was part of the "simulated" SW universe (I wouldn't want to be part of the real one.. think of living in fear of the Death Star or Imperial fleet, and having to worry about the Dark Side consuming you at any moment!), I certainly wouldn't be herding banthas or working on a poring moisture farm in the ass-end of space!

I'd be fighting in some glorious battles or on some holy crusade somewhere. It's entertainment for me, not a life. If it were life, I'd have to make it boring, and yet meaningful. Trust me, I wouldn't trade this life for that one!

If you mean a world in which you knew who the good guys and bad guys were, things were clear cut, there were happy endings, and you had kick butt powers to solve your problems, sure, we'd all want that, but wouldn't we "fight to wake up"? ; )

Besides, once you make a fantasy a reality, it isn't a fantasy anymore. It becomes commonplace and "boring" (you see it everyday, it's not something dreamed up). You'd have then other fantasies, and this Star Wars one would disapear. Oh, it IS possible to get sick of Star Wars! That's why I don't over indulge myself in the "universe." It's a sci-fi franchise that's limited by money and the imagination of a few companies and rich big wigs (admit it).

Valid points, all. I would post a point-by point response, but I have to run off to work soon. As for fantasy becoming reality...well I guess that it would become boring if we saw it as real life. I think the point though would be that it was a game, and that while in the game, one would be aware of that fact.

Kind of like you're dreaming, but you know you're dreaming and can control it, yeah that's cool. I guess I would do it as long as I always had the option to come "back to reality" and I wasn't forced to spend my whole life there. Like I said, it might be cool to visit for awhile, but I wouldn't want to stay there forever.

Maybe we should get a petition off to LEC - surely they're always looking to revolutionise games...?
