Why do some topics in this forum turn to religion all of the sudden?

Just wondering, cuz Ikhnaton's post about getting a drink got into a little religious debate.

1)It is a very interesting topic, an infinite means of discussion.
2)Sometimes it is the only way to back up an opinion which would otherwise be pinned as hypocritical.
3)A certain number of us feel that learning in this manner, i.e. sharing different perspectives, is productive.
4)It is a means to the ultimate answer - why we are here.

So, to answer your question, I'd say it is inevitable.

(And also I might add this is the best place to discuss these matters. Nobody gets punched in the face!)

Well, I can agree with some of what you say.

I think that the basis of religion is a very interesting topic. But, can you really say that one religion is inately better than another?

I mean its just another consideration.

Yes, you can say anything you want to say http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif

And it isn't a matter of which one is "better". You argue that type of stuff if you were debating a belief system. I suppose religion is a rather crude word to use. I would much rather say the discussions many of us are having are over what IS. How you go about expressing what you feel is the truth is another thing entirely, and some even debate that the expressal of this truth is readily defined and must be followed. That is when stuff really starts flying. "The way I worship Jesus is better than your way" and stuff like that. Luckily, we've only had a few very minor cases of this that have been handled in a very dignified manner.

Well in many ways Star Wars and religion are intertwined (the "Force" huh?!). It's about the kinds of choices we have to make in our lives about darkness and light. ; )

That, and I think science fiction tends to attract inquisitive individuals, so we tend to be interested in discussing "such things."

Off hand comments can lend themselves to hearty debate. And yes, since there ARE so many different views, there's always something neat to hear from someone else's point of view.

If this kind of discussion bothers you, that's okay, you can ignore it if you wish. However, if you feel like joining in, feel free. All are welcome!

TheAhnFahn wisely sez--

That is a very good point and an important distinction. Trying to find out what IS instead of whose religion is BEST is what keeps these discussions on such a high level, instead of degenerating into religious holy wars.

The issue is TRUTH, not sectarian supremacy.

Thank you, AhnFahn.
