View Full Version : General Questions

It seems a lot of you guys have played some MMORPGs before so i have a few questions:

First, in this game there is general balance of classes, but also a great deal of distinction between them. So my question is, what things should i consider when i pick my character.

Next, does anyone know how many characters we can have? Are we gonna have to start anew whenever an expansion comes out if we want a new race?

Lastly, names are very important in SWG. it wont seem right if the names dont have a star wars feel, so if anyone knows any good name formulas or websites that have some, please let me know.

Thanks

There are not classes in SWG like there are in other MMORPGs. There are some differences between races (some will be stronger, but have other downsides, etc). If you want to play an imperial you should probably go with a human because it will be harder for non humans to move up through the imp ranks.

They have not announced how many characters we can have. We do know that it will be more than one though.

I don't know for sure if you will have to start totally over if you want a new race for your character when an expansion comes out. My gut feeling is you will have to start from the ground up.

I was reading a LucasArts faq today, and the naming is going to be controlled so people don't use rally dumb ones (LuukSkywalker777 was the example of a dumb one they gave). This is a brilliant move in my opinion.

However, there will also be a name generator if inspiration is a porblem. I can't remember the link, by the way.

hey thanks for the warm welcome.

i plan to stick around awhile, but ill probably be mostly asking questions since i havent been here since the start...(i hope i can catch up on everything but i doubt it really...)

So i got another one for you. Exactly how much diversity can you have when you develop your character? Can you only make him really good at one thing, or can he be really good at like two or three things? i assume jedi will only have one thing theyre good at...but other than them...like...can i be a wookiee grooming, bounty hunter that owns a shop on the side?

The way I understand it, yes.

They are creating alot of freedom for each person to develop their character.
U can also "forget" some knowledge about a particulary skill in order to free up skill points to use on other skills. :)

good, cause from what ive read it seems like itd be hard to do more than one job.

oh yeah, ive been meaning to ask about storyline. i know when it is gonna begin (sort of), but how long will it run? will it run until the emperor dies, or will it ever go past that? and how long will it run in the real world? the first expansion will be in a year, so im guessin like at least 5 or 6 years. Anyone have any idea (cause that word guess is really an apt word choice).

(now im spoutin off random questions)
how about the money too? if we control the economy, whats to stop inflation (or some other economic problem) from going ridiculously high? i mean, in phantasy star online, money was only useful for like a month. After that everybody i met had the max amount. So if im a merchant and money gets useless, whats the point of sellin stuff. or whats the point of even being a merchant at all?

how much influence can we have in this universe anyway? i know we can build cities (which rules), but what about battles. if i participated in some huge battle, id like my deeds to go noticed and have that huge battle recorded somehow. And what about real battles? im dont really know of any that arent in the movies, but are big things like those gonna be like advertised so we can all join in?

thats all for my tangent for now.
let me know if youve heard anything about these quetions, or even just your thoughts.

thanks

I think I remember them saying that the story in the game will not progress with the movies. In a way time will be standing still.

They are putting a lot of resource sinks into the economy to prevent that.

You can set up battlefields to have fights between factions or PAs. Anyone entering the battlefield (even neutrals) must pick a side or leave imediately.

well.. i think like mike said.. i think the time will just be like... well stop.... i think they say it happens after the battle of Hoth... and well the time line stops there.. and we live on without going further.

abou the money thing... well i dont think the inflation will be minimal.... casue a lot of folks would love to fight and be a jedi and do crazy stuff... that they dont realy care about money unless they need to upgrade themselves... i on the other hand am planning to start a transport company or a trading company... i cant have money enough

Actually, I think it's after the Battle of Yavin and before the battle at Hoth.

the devs are makin lots of forms of the animals right? will they have different abilities too, like the chocobos (gold/green/blue/black) of ff7? i think that would be cool. there should be like rancors that are good for taming. and faster...uh...gungan rider dooflinchies...or swimming ones or something. i think i read that they are going to have different personalities (someone confirm for me on that please).

oh yeah...if a jedi doesnt declare a faction but he sees some punks out plundering some small city, can he jump into a PvP and defend them even if he hasnt declared a faction? should the jedi have their own faction? (they should pretty much join the rebellion, but that just makes them jedi rebels, which would make them an even bigger target, which some jedis might not wanna do since theyre gonna be adding to the huge bounties already on them, i dunno, maybe since theyre gonna be hunted anyway...)

I got from the post about the names, especially in the FAQ that it'll be a lot like some of the other games where you can try to use whatever name you want but some would not be allowed.

My question would be can you continuously keep using the random name generator until you get one that you like? Or can you just hit it once?

Because other than my main character name, I haven't a clue to what I want my other characters names to be.

I'm not positive, but I would imagine that you can use it as much as you want. After all, it would suck to get stuck with a gay name like "Floop Karnicats" or something like that. "Floop" just doesn't strike fear into your enemies......besides the fear factor, who would buy from a gunsmith named Floop, or take the venerable Jedi Master Floop seriously?

I agree. You will probably be able to use the name generator as many times as you want until it gives you something you like.
