View Full Version : Darth Sidious = Palpatine?

Ok, here's the question:

In the Movie Episode I, is "the mysterious Darth Sidious" the same person as the later Emperor Palpatine?

I don't know whether this question has been discussed yet or if it's in some StarWars book or whatever, probably it's a stupid question but I always wondered.

After I watched Episode I for the first time, I did think that Darth Sidious resembled the late Palpatine (outer appearance), especially when you look at the nose and mouth (which is pretty much all you can see under the hood). Then again, these dark Sith Lords pretty much all kinda look the same, right? ;)

After the second time I thought nah, can't be him because if Palpatine was a powerful Sith lord, trying to become Chancellor of the Republican senate, he'd find other ways to do so (like use mind trick on all the senators or something :D )

But still, is Darth Sidious just a figure that's never heard of again, only to be displayed as the Master of Darth Maul? Wouldn't be logical. He surely would appear in Episode II again, maybe as an ally of Count Dooku or something... (by the way: haven't seen the movie yet, so please no spoilers... :) )

Or is he the same person as Palpatine, leading two lives, one as the loyal republican senator, supporting Naboo; one as the Sith Lord, finally revealing himself in Episode III?

Does anyone actually *know* or has any idea/comments on this?

OMFG. Dude, you need to get a clue. I hope you were just trolling. It sure sounds like it. Maybe when you see Ep II, you will finally connect the dots although I am not sure how anyone could not have already done so.

Palpatine is Sidious. They are one in the same. Palpatine is the public figure, Sidious is his shadowy alter-ego manipulating events from out of sight so that he can become Emperor. In Episode I, he'd already used the blockade and invasion of Naboo to gain a sympathy vote that made him chancellor.

Reading your answers, I feel all stupid. So I was right in the first place. Sad enough, I wasn't trolling... :o

To my excuse:
I am not really a total Starwars junkie so I basically have my information only from watching each movie maybe twice or three times. Never really "studied" Starwars until early this year... :)
(but am toptally addicted now... :D )

Then I had this discussion with a bunch of jackasses when we watched Episode I together and they all insisted I was completely paranoid to think Sidious and Palpatine were the same person...

I probably got influenced by that too much.

Thanks for lighting me up...

Don't they end up calling him "Sido-Dyas" they pronounce it with a long I but it sure looks like Darth Sidious who is Senator Palpatine.

Hmmm I read the script this morning so I could remember his name from the movie. Must have been a typo on their part.

BTW, long time no see hannibal, :D I haven't been to these boards since JK2 was released. It's a bit stuffy in here. LOL

I thought it was rather obvious considering that in TPM they played the Emperor's theme from ROTJ (dark male chorus) when Darth Sidious was onscreen

Oh, and here's a couple other musical tidbits for you. The children's chorus in "Augie's Municipal Band" (heard at the end of TPM) is actually a variation of the Emperor's theme - once you realize this, TPM doesn't really end on such a happy note. And "Across the Stars" (love theme from AOTC) is actually a variation of the main SW theme (the overture heard at the beginning of every movie).

John Williams recycles themes in interesting ways....

To those who think that Master Sifo-Dyas is Palpatine. How would that work? I know that the Jedi Council aren't as clever as they might be...but I think they would notice that one of their long time members was also a senator from Naboo...

Also, Bluez, don't feel too bad, my friend walked out of the movie and was like 'wtf, I thought Stormtroopers were bad guys, why are they working for the good guys????' I was *really* impressed with his deductive reasoning skills...lol

What I find odd is that Obi Wan knew that Fett worked for Dooku, but he didn't seem phased by the fact that he had created a clone army for what was supposed to be the other team weird, I thought.

 I didn't really understand what you were getting at there...

The whole Yoda fight scene, however, makes me wonder if we'll see Darth Sidious do some good fighting, in EpIII...

Did he though? I mean, Jango was there, but I don't think Obi Wan saw him. He was taken by Droidekas (those ball destroyer droids) and Dooku denied Jango even being in the area (before Obi knew he went Sith).

Obi Wan doesn't see Jango, unless he sees him fighting Mace at the end. And even if he did. Jango is a bounty hunter, he was hired to be used for a cloning. He did that job, after that job, he was up for grabs.

The only thing that would connect Jango and Dooku to Obi Wan (aside from his possibly seeing him, which is just as likely to not have happened) is Jango saying he was hired by Lord Tyranus, but it never even mentions that Dooku is Tyranus until the very end.

...He followed Jango to the planet. That's how he got there in the first place. I'm pretty sure he knows he's there.;) Oh, and what you describe would be a huge coincidence for Obi-Wan to ignore...

It all depends on who knows the big picture, palpatine is the only one who does. period.

Ok, by using some of the final scenes of TPM, it isn't too hard to figure out Palpatine = Sidious.

When they are burning Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace and Yoda discuss who was killed, the master or the apprentice. At which time the camera pans and I think closes in on Palpatine, who is wearing a hood - It seems to answer the question for you.

For those that think that there aren't enough clues for many of the things Lucas brings up - watch the screen as well as listen to the text, as by just hearing the text by itself may mislead you. So much of the Star Wars dialogue is deliberately ambiguous, that it can be taken either way, good or evil. It is also that many things can have a different meaning after seeing events in later movies as well.

As for Darth - I think it is dutch based, and means Dark. Darth Vader is actually, or very close to, dutch for Dark Father.

Watch AOTC and then re-read what you said here!!
