Look at the versions of patches and support - with the inclusion of new vehicles, weapons, etc.

Another example - what JK2's engine uses:
Notice a list of beta patches till the full releases - public beta testing is where it's at - the same goes for OFP (first post).

What about Valve? They are still updating a game thats 4 years old and they have released add-ons like TFC and Deathmatch classic.

Ion Storm with Deus Ex. Quite a long time after the game was released, they released a patch that added mulitplayer. Even though it sucked, I though it was pretty nice of them.

something that changes the fundamental mechanics and balances of the game play: its 1.03, the official patch that is really a mod.
can anyone say "bait and switch?"
