Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - Review

Platforms: PC, N64

LucasArtsí first venture into starfighter shoot-em ups takes the best in gameplay from the acclaimed Shadows of the Empire and makes it even better with special effects, real-time lighting, varied camera perspectives and more.

Gameplay

Set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, you play Luke Skywalker as you lead the newly-formed Rogue Squadron into 16 daring missions. The game has a wonderful plot that integrates with the continuity of the Star Wars movies.
The controls are easy to master as well; a few simple key combinations and your craft will do a 360 spin. Pressing 1 of 8 buttons will change the angle of the camera from inside to outside, from left-side to right-side, etc.
This game has great replayablility value, as there are secrets and other power-ups that will help you with later missions. Also, completing all levels with a certain medal will reveal a reward; how does flying the Millennium Falcon sound? What about flying in the Death Star Trench?

Sound

As always, LucasArts outdo themselves in this game. Each ship has a different sound for flying, turning, even the little switches in the cockpit. The voices are not those in the movies, but the actors in the game do a wonderful job. Although, there arenít actually that many characters from the movies in the game; I count about 5.

Graphics

The graphics on the PC are truly superb; however, you will need a 3D-accelerator card to run the game. The graphics on the N64 do not look as good, but itís all you can expect from the console. Whichever platform you play the game, you will still find yourself being blown up, simply because you were sitting there like a guppyfish at feeding time going, "ooh".

Cutscenes

Unlike most other LucasArts games, the cutscenes in RS are made using the ships in the game; no glorious FMVs, Iím afraid. However, this makes the levels blend together even more smoothly; there is no difference between the intros and the gameplay, so it all looks the same.

Overview

This game came out in early 1999, and I bought my PC version new for £35 (roughly $58). To my recollection, the N64 version was about £45 ($75). Usually, Iíd give a current price guide, but to be honest I havenít seen this game for a while. However, if you look hard enough at somewhere like Electronics Boutique, you can find this game for a good price. Well worth picking up if you like shoot-em ups like Colony Wars.

Worth mentioning on the site is the update available on the LucasArts site that allows you to be the Naboo Starfighter; it's available at http://www.lucasarts.com/products/rogue/default.htm .

Hey Matt, not that I'm trying to take control of your site or anything like that, but would you like me to make you some graphics? For example, a link to your page that can be posted on other fan pages.

i was wondering since you did a great job on that link button, if you could get me a TPM header or some for the other games since LEC won't let me take some off of their site?

When you say header, do you mean like the title at the top of each page (the Racer logo, for instance)? Or, do you mean a big ESW Logo for the front page based on Episode 1?

So a big header for each game? I think I can manage that, but I can't use LucasArts graphics, you say?
