How do they maintain or increase their ranks reliably? It's been established that if a Jedi were to reproduce (like Anakin, and Leia in the expanded universe), he/she/it passes some sort of genetic predisposition for force sensitivity (a recessive force allele? - interesting, because it means that Han would have had to have at least have SOME Jedi in him). But Old Republic Jedi aren't allowed to marry, or reproduce. Do they just hope for some cosmic happenstance to create a child with a high enough (ungh) midi-chlorian count to become force aware, hope that they luck out and FIND this child, and then proceed to convince the parents to part with their (possibly) only son/daughter at such an early age?
from Starwars.com:
Jedi candidates are detected, identified and taken into the order as infants. One method of detection is through blood sampling -- those with great Force potential often have high midi-chlorian counts in their bloodstream. A prospective Jedi begins training in infancy. All connection to previous family life is lost. In this early stage of training, a single master instructs groups of Jedi hopefuls.
and here, they speak of Luke:
Nonetheless, his raw talent in the Force -- inherited from his father -- was such that his age didn't matter.
In short, where do the Jedi get their children? Why not allow Jedi to marry and reproduce with other (like species) Jedi? They could even limit it to two or three children ever year. It's a sure way of assuring new Jedi for the next generation, and perhaps increasing the force sensitivity of future generations. Where's the Jedi breeding program? We're talking about, what, hundreds or thousands of worlds here? Why wouldn't you want more than a handfull of Jedi running around?
