Where did the name Vader come from?

I always wondered why Anikin chose the name vader.

Well,

if my language and memory skills serve me, vader is taken from the german Vater which means father. Roughly translated Dark Father (Darth Vader) or something like that.

Why Anakin chose that, I have no idea, but definitely the coolest of all the darth names.
