ok maybe im just blind, but until today ive never seen an annoying popup ad on this website. now ive gotten about 5 since i went to jediknightii.net and clicked forums. this is lame, very lame.

i expect this from morons with their geocities and yahoo personal websites, but not jediknightii.net and lucasforums.com. oh well, i guess we can all enjoy being money making tools for the owners of this website.

yea, jkii.net can take their popups and shove them somewhere unpleasant. thats why i use this program. and it works, very well.

Hey webmasters and server admins need to make money too. I just close em when they come up. And since I've been visiting the forums (about March) there's been pop up ads. Just one of the things you have to live with for free access to a neato forum. :)

please man, if you dont have anything non-derogatory to add to the conversation, just leave... i dont think anyone loves pop up adds with all their heart, but they are a fact of life, why dont you click on a few and bring some $$ in rather than waste bandwidth posting about them...

The pop-ups here are not that bad, you go to some sites and you never get to see the site cause you are to busy closing pop-ups so stop bitching.

why should the webmaster earn money just because you visit their site? does walmart make money if you walk in the store and dont buy anything? of course not!

if they wanna have a store section with t-shirts and coffee cups and whatever the ****, thats cool with me. the point of a business is to make money, not force your customer's web brower into spamming you with things u didnt ask for. its the equivalent of telemarketing over the internet. but instead of bothering you on the phone, they fill your face with advertisements.

popups are annoying, no one likes them and webmasters know it. yet they still do it. they figure a small annoyance is ok as long as they get a few extra bucks. theyve got better ways to make money than to inconvience us with bs popups.

How do you think they keep all these sites up? They use the money they make off the adds plus some out of their own pocket to keep these sites up. They aren't pocketing any money off of them.

Webmasters should earn money so so they can feed their families & afford to have a roof over their head. Pop up ads, especially harmless ones like on the forums are HARDLY intrusive. Visit any average porn or warez site to see "bad".

Your Walmart analogy is faulty. It costs a webmaster money in bandwidth charges and server maintenance every time you visit these forums. If memory recalls it doesnt cost walmart a thing fo you to drive up there and park in their parking lot. :)

If you dont want to pay for pop up ads why doesn't the lfnetwork start charging all of us for forum accounts? Is that more pleasing for you? If not the shut the god damn hell up & click the close button like everyone else (but click on the ads once in a blue moon so these guys can stay in business :)).

NerfYoda,

might wanna bone up on those reading comprehension skills.

I never said webmasters shouldnt make money, i simply said they shouldnt do it using popups. this website is run by the same people who run www.ugo.com (or at least thats where the popups are comming from according to my research). they host many sites like this one, they arent exactly bums out in the streets with paper cups. they are making profit. read my post again, it will clearly state that i understand a business is supposed to make money. just not in this way.

my walmart analogy is perfect. you are correct in saying that your local walmart store doesnt have "bandwidth". thats like saying dogs cant speak english. thank you captian obvious! walmart might not have bandwidth. but they have other bills to pay. walmart also doesnt force you into their store. you have a choice. whereas popups appear to annoy you. you have absolutely no control over it.

your point about the parking lot is "faulty" because walmart does not own the parking lot. almost all walmarts are in shopping centers, which have other stores around them. the shopping center owns these parking lots. anyways, now youve got me talkin about something else, lets get back on the subject.

why doesnt the site charge us for accounts on the forums? listen to yourself, thats insane. no one would pay for that, at least not enough for it to be successful. POPUPS ARE INTRUSIVE! the difference between you and i is that youve gotten used to them. its like watching a movie with nice special effects. at first you are amazed, but after 10 or so times, its old news, no biggie.

bottom line - theres other ways to make cash on the internet besides putting popups on your website. that is all im saying. if you think the guys who run this website are poor, youve lost your mind.

This website isn't run by the people at Ugo. This website is run by a group of extremely devoted fans who have even been searching for an alternative to Ugo BECAUSE they don't like the popups either.

NerfYoda was being sarcastic about the chraging for accounts thing.

In the words of Padme Amidala, "You assume far too much". :D

Of course business make money with annoying advertisements. Radio, TV and direct mailers are perfect examples. It's funny. People can get a small mountain of junk mail in their mailbox & what do they do? They throw it out. But when you get SPAM in your inbox or get an xCam popup ad ohhh boy run for the hills, Maude! Call the ISP! The webmaster is lazy! Whatever! Hell, it even requires more physical exertion to walk over to your trash can & throw it out than to move your hand an inch or 2 and press your index finger to close a window. These ads are not that intrusive. Go search for a program crack on the web out there.. You'll see some intrusive popups then... :)

Yeah there are probably other ways to make money, like a store or something like that, but that would generate about as much cash as having to pay for accounts (IMHO).

Anyhow my point is quit your pessimistic bitching and either get an ad blocker or close the window.

Last thing: Out where I live Walmarts aren't usually part of a shopping center, large mammoth monsters to consumerism out in the middle of nowhere. So nyah :p

Ok no more arguing. We both have different viewpoints but I won't press mine any further. :)

Boba Rhett,

the popups come from the address mediamgr.ugo.com. soooo, i went to www.ugo.com and searched their site for jedi knight. clicked on the section. and that link took me here. their site layout looks extremely similar to the layout of jediknightii.net.

hmm, i guess you could say im assuming. i didnt feel like wasting hours trying to find out. but with the small amount of proof i have. i believe im right. and if im not, that still doesnt change anything.

websites that dont make money dont last. ravensoft even does official news here. im sure they provide some sort of funding as well.

the bottom line is still popups = bad.

1. Yes. Popups are very bad. I totally agree. :)

2. They only started using Ugo last year. When all the forums merged I believe.

3. They recieve no funding from Ravensoft, Lucasarts, etc.

4. You think Jkii.net always looked like that? ;) They've gone through several overhauls.

5. No, I'm not BSing ya. :D I have a reasonable grasp on what I'm talking about. :)

6. I like lists. :D

NerfYoda,

spam and popups ads are a grey area as far as the law is concerned. there are no "internet laws" simply because when the internet was created, no one ever knew it would become what is has. freedom is the greatest thing about the internet, its also the worst.

in telemarketing, they can call you and bother you, but if u say "take me off your list" they arent supposed to call you again. on the internet, who do u tell u dont want popups? or dont want spam? you cant. ive had spam that sent me to websites to take myself off lists, but in the end they tricked me into signing up for more spam lol.

i dont wish to argue with you either, but you threw the mud first. i was just throwing some back.
