View Full Version : GHOUL 2 and anti Push/Pull + Backstab server config demo

Lately I have been messing around with different server variables in order to create multiplayer duels that are much more like singleplayer, and that offers some protection against the Push/Pull + Backstab combination that some of us know all too well. The major component was enabling GHOUL 2, Jedi Outcast's animation and hit detection system. Now in singleplayer, GHOUL 2 collisions (poly-to-poly) are already enabled, however they are not in multiplayer. Enabling this creates much more intense duels, and it's much harder to do the Push/Pull + Backstab combo and actually win with it. This also enables much more accurate blocking.

Since people still can use the Push/Pull + Backstab combo with these settings, no Force is the best with these following settings. Hopefully in the next patch, plus the following settings will be the ultimate in multiplayer saber dueling...

Here are the variables and their commands in which I used in my demo (which you can download below):

seta g_sabertracesaberfirst 1 <--- This command is enabled by default, but enter it just in case.

seta g_saberghoul2collision 1 <--- This is the big one. It enables GHOUL 2 hit detection for lightsabers in multiplayer. While this will increase network traffic, it won't be very noticeable (if at all) for low ping users such as cable and DSL users. Don't be discouraged to use this because of slightly increased network traffic, because it's not a lot!

seta g_dismember 300 <--- This is purely cosmetic. It enables dismemberment, nothing else. Most servers have this already.

And to demonstrate these settings in multiplayer with a few bots on the Jedi Master skill level (still fairly stupid), download the following demo. To install it, extract it to your Jedi Outcast\GameData\base\demos folder. If you don't have one, make one. Then go into multiplayer, select Play Demo from the Play screen and watch the demo (don't press any keys during the demo, it will abort it).

I know this won't solve ALL backstabbing problems,
but it should help to make saber combat more
realistic and fun, especially on servers with no
Push/Pull, like limited Force or no Force.

why isn't ghoul2 enabled by default? is it THAT much more network traffic? seems like a good idea to me...

also, how does ghoul2 affect gameplay in this...meaning, could u do more damage by striking one's head etc?

I just tested them out, and they work great!

For the first time I actually had fun fightin' a bot.

The saber blocking is alot more accurate with these commands, it looks more real. And yes, i noticed a difference with the backsweep/stab, it is no longer unblockable as long as you are facing the swinging blade.

I'll see if the server i regular will put in these commands, they friggin' rocks!

Yeah I just tried it too, and it's totally awesome...from what I gathered it's harder to pull off the backstab/sweep because I think they have to be directly behind you...

But the saberfighting rules...

I tried it, I liked it...now Im gonna try it with sabertrace 0 and see what its like with 1.02 style blocking.

The saber trace just reduces blocking to 1.02, you might want it if you're on an NF server (no pulling, quicker kills).

I hope these settings will be used on servers, especially on finnish servers (They won't be used there, though, because the people running the servers won't be looking here for server tips... :( ).

This Ghoul and SaberTrace stuff will save the game - Raven!

Plus, give us kick back as a single tap option.

If you make these ghoul and sabertrace things server side rules so we can find servers running them it'll be good.

I tried it using g_sabertracesaberfirst 0 and found that although it made for a little less blocking, the gameplay was more fun when leaving it set to 1.

Use both settings as originally posted and it rocks! Will remain on my server.

Hey but how about a rule?

Such as in MOH:AA you had to put CKR or CPR depending on the sever-side mod.

So how about 3 letters that signify the 3 settings:

1 - if one setting
2 - if two of em
3 - if all three

so like GSD

G = Ghoul 2:

seta g_saberghoul2collision 1

S = Saber 1.02:

seta g_sabertracesaberfirst 0

D = Dismemberment:

seta g_dismember 300

All you would have to do is have it so servers that run these settings have it in their name...

Um, all these settings are SERVER SIDE, clients don't need to enable them.

Uh.. exactly it's for server's - but the clients can't see what the settings are - they don't display as rules.

So we need a way of having servers tell the clients.

or a program can be made/moded to scan for the servers using those setnings

Only if the game reports those settings.

That's the problem, it doesn't.

So no program can find settings that are not reported.

It'd have to be patched or modded in the game to have it report the settings.

Then the program will have to:
server side: make a info file on the server (whit info on how it's set)
client : look for that file and get the info.

is there any way to get the Jk2 demo recorder to work in SP, cause I want to record a certain thing for a friend, and I installed the thing correctly and all, and I recorded it, but when I went to look for it in my Jk2 folder/subfolders, I couldn't find it...

This is great gameplay, but I wasn't able to find any servers running it.

there is a NF sabers only server that runs GHOUL 2... its called **II ROCKY MOUNTAIN JK2 1.03x (SG) NFII** or something like that... I go there all the time and the host just recently added that line plus like 10 skins to his database... its one of my favorite servers

I had the ghoul2 setting on my server but I had to take it off since the server was getting bogged down. I'm upgrading my server soon so I may try it again once I have the faster processor.

I definitely like the sabertrace 0 with less blocking.

Dismemberment is a must!

Ghoul2 - I'm kind of undecided. It seems to weaken the heavy stance and overall the sabers seemed less powerfull which led to longer drawn out fights and more throwing and kicking.

We still need to spread word about on which servers this is enabled. I also like it a lot but it is quite confusing. Sometimes you join a server and you don't know if it is enabled or not.

I also had one problem with the adding of [GDS] to the server name: When I look in the list of servers, I cannot always read the full name of it due to its length. When the [GDS]-tag is at the end of the name, I cannot see it.

Suggestion: put it on the beginning of the server name. This way, you can sort alphabetically by server name and get all the [GDS] servers after another.

2nd suggestions: add server broadcasts so that in the game, message appear like:
This server has Ghoul2 enabled to enhance saber fighting. If you don't know what this is, ask!

Maybe the people go like "enhance saber fighting? whats that?" and they ask on the server. If someone knowing about Ghoul2 he can explain it and help to spread the word.

I think it is worthwhile getting the naming convention sorted out. I always look for Ghoul2 servers, but I can't always find one. I'm pretty keen on it and having g_sabertracesaberfirst set to 0 as well. It certainly makes bots much more fun, and on the servers I have played backstabbing is much less common (but still used in certain situations, which is good). Anyway, just my 2 cents.

To spread the word I today emailed to the server admins of www.jolt.co.uk. They host 7 public servers for JO and I regularily play on these servers because I get good ping times. Here's the E-Mail I received:

We've been investigating the settings on the servers in order to tweak them better to get rid of the nasty pull/push backstab problem, and we think we've come up with the solution. We've installed the Raven SDK (compiled) as a server-side mod (you will need cl_allowdownload 0 to be able to connect) on the servers.

When investigating the Ghoul2 settings, they made little or no difference to the backstab problem, and the mod appears to increase the level of blocking as well as reducing pull/backstab damage.

Jolt 8 Duel ( is however, running Ghoul2 atm.
Jolt 1-3,6,7 are running this raven SDK mod
Jolt 4 is CTF so we've left that as original 1.03
Jolt 5 is now running a new Disintegration mod downloadable from -http://www.thejediknights.com/disintegrate.zip.

I was kinda confused because he said that Ghoul2 wouldn't do much about pull/backstab because to me it seemed that you encounter it much less on these servers...

It only fixes pull/backstab when the player TRIES to get back up. OF COURSE you won't block it laying on the ground, geesh! :rolleyes:

1. I'm glad they have it on their duel server, because on FFA servers it will increase lag with a lot of players, around 8-10, unless the server's connection is uber, in which case it doesn't matter.

2. Even if it doesn't TOTALLY FIX the backstab problem, it should still be enabled for duel servers in the U1.04 mod or the next patch because it still kicks ass!

ghoul2 is the best thing to happen to 1.03

i played on jolt servers with ghoul2 (a lil while ago just after it had been discovered jolt 1 had it on for FFA)

sum1 explain what the SDK patch is???

Like to know that as well.

Also, sometimes you encounter the need for a file called test0.pk3. I can't download the file because auto-download was not allowed on the server. WTF?

I just hope that things do not get out of hand, there seem to pop up all kinds of mods that actually only contain Ghoul2 and dismemberment and yet for some reason all of a sudden require the clients to take action of some sort.

Whereas it would be just so simple, just enable the settings on the server! DUH.
