Internet in 'meltdown'

By IAN KING, Business Editor

MILLIONS of British internet users face a huge slowdown in their service next week.
The meltdown could come as soon as Monday when the owners of Europe’s biggest data network are threatening to shut down the system.

Dutch firm KPN Qwest handles almost half of Europe’s internet traffic. But it went bankrupt last week. Now administrators say the network will be closed unless creditors pay all their debts by Monday.

Last night one insider said: “This could be the internet world’s own September 11.”

Freeserve and AOL, Britain’s two biggest internet service providers, both use KPN Qwest’s network. Popular websites such as Virgin Money, TheTrainline.com and Abbey National, are also said to be users. KPN Qwest fired 350 employees earlier this week but re-hired around 70 engineers to keep the network going while a buyer could be found.

But the engineers, who include a dozen Britons, have been told not to touch the system if it is shut down.

One told The Sun: “People are underestimating how big an impact this will have.

“About 40-50 per cent of European internet traffic will go into a black hole.”

Life without the internet...

Sorry, I am watching Harry Potter so....

But really how will they communicate to us? A LOT of people here are from Great Britian.

If find it insulting to the US that someone considers it the "Sept 11 of the internet." thousands of people died for no reason and the internet goes down, well that's not that big of a deal. No one died.

I use BT, so I don't give a crap.

Plus, it's from "The Sun". Nothing that comes from "The Sun" can be treated seriously.

You could write a letter, or use the phone, like people used to do.
