View Full Version : Female Jedi Trainer, Opinions Requested

Infinity Blade

I was thinking that since I hadn't done any female skins, I'd throw out one there....

I just threw this together today, so I thought I'd get some opinions on it before I continue to work on it some more. I think it's turning out fairly well...

Here goes:

Back Body Detail (http://wat.midco.net/eggnog1/fjeditb.jpg)

So whattya think?

I think you cut and pasted pieces of the male jeditrainer skin onto the jan model and changed nothing save for making them align properly. For this you deserve zero praise, zero critique, and zero credit.

Wow.. that was harsh.

Good idea, Infinity.. people have been looking for more female skins.

The trainer suit looks a bit slapdash on the female model.. as a trainer, it should look a little more professional.

LOL. My god, you pay no attention, do you?

1. 2. It isn't the Jan model, It's TAVION.

2. Yes, it has reused textures from a jedi trainer, as well as Tavion. Virtually all the reused textures have been modified some in color, shape, or texture. The face is completely original, as is shirt undernead the breastplate. There's some more completely original stuff there, but you apparently can't tell the difference.

3. You are just a bitter little punk, aren't you. Learn some manners, and to know what you're actually talking about before acting like a know it all.

Personally I think that looks good InfinityBlade. :) (Hey and perhaps not everyone has the same experience, talent, tools or time to create excellent new skins/models from scratch. So no need to go trippin and bitching at people here! Hey, we're all Star Wars fans so we should get along!)

One remark I do have for your skin InfinityBlade (which is what I also think of the original male Jedi-Trainer skin), isn't it a bit dark tinted? Black outfit and all, it seems a bit Dark Side to me. It's soo far off the classic Jedi tunics. (I know in ROTJ and after Luke mostly wears black but in the most recent books he wears traditional Jedi tunics.) Just a thought anyways. :) :jango: :slave:

Relax dude, take it easy! Everyone is free to post his opinion in this forum. Or are you the dumb nut that only wants praises, compliments and stuff like; "how cool your skin is" and "i'm going to download it 3 times" etc? Mark_Li has the right to say what he thinks and you should respect is opinion whether you like it or not.

As for the skin, good job, but I agree with agensmith, it is very dark. The next step is creating some of your textures.

Lucko Mabri

Course Mark_Li Has his own opinion. AT LEAST HE COULD GIVE SOME CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM INSTEAD OF

Well the world is filled with jerks, you will need to get used to that. And he didn't say it sucked (for example only by saying he doesn't like it) but he said WHY it sucked. So for me its constructive criticism, even if harsh.

HapSlash
06-09-2002, 11:03 PM
I'd have to disagree with Droidekas, while everyone has a right to an opinion, constructive criticism, this was not. In no way did he even hint at how it could be done better. I would also demand that people think before they post, especially when speaking negatively about something.

To be honest, this was ment to be, just simply, a female version of the jedi trainer. So reusing the textures from the original jedi trainer,... makes sense. And he even stated that it was unfinished, which would make this a prime time to offer 'constructive' criticism, instead of trying to make someone want to give up.

And for those strictly against altering existing textures,... All I have to say is it's not that easy. It's not just cut and paste when you're totally changing models. I also find it no less offensive than creating textures based off of photographs.

I'm starting to run a little long here, and I've got other things I've got to get to.

So in essence, I think that this is a great skin. Anyone who says otherwise, is probably bitter about something else.

Infinity Blade
06-10-2002, 12:44 AM
Ya see, Hapslash get's it!

And Droidekas, the "reasons" given by Mark_Li were mostly incorrect, and he was obviously either not paying attention to details of the skins (mine and JO's), or was just trying to poke at the skin. Either way, they're's rather pointless remarks at best.

He is, however, entitled to his opinion.

-----

Essentially I was looking for something to go with the Jedi Trainer. I wanted it to look similar, but different as well. Not exactly the same style, but they go well together. I spawned a few of both in a single player game and spawned some reborn, and the ensuing fight was pretty cool. It's also fun to play as your SP character....

While it does reuse some textures from the Trainer and Tavion, they have been altered a good deal.

And I'm not truly going for originality here. I have other skins, projects, and mod's I'm working on with that. However, you'll have to wait before those are ready.

Anyway, for those interested what the latest one looks like in game... (forgot to remove tavions feathers)

You dissapoint me on this Hapslash. Your ego is starting to come out of your ears. *copy/paste* And while everyone has a right to an opinion, constructive criticism, this was not either. A skinner like you should have more than candy and praises to offer to our fellow member, or not? And the fact that someone doesn't like it is perfectly fair and there is no need to turn the issue to other's people problems (wich you have too like everybody else). Personaly I think Mark Li is a moron and he could have said the same thing in a different way, but he doesn't like copy and pasted stuff. YOU even understood that, so it wasn't plain jerking afterall. I realy don't think knights in shinning armor ever did any good in the long run.

I'm getting long too so I will cut short by saying what I think of the skin. It does require skill and effort to align textures, the overall feel is very good and its a good interpretation of the male jedi trainer skin. What doesn't make it "great" but only "good" (I must be bitter about some stuff, I will certainly go meditate on it later) Is that some of the textures don't seem to fit quite in. Final advice is that if you want more success with the more exigent crowd, try finishing some spots with your own textures. Start using and learning the tools, start with small areas, take examples from existing textures and find tutorials about your paint program on the web.

So some of the texture's don't seem to fit in to you.. K. That's an opinion that's constructive.

But to be honest, the rest of your advice is kinda off. I know the tools, how to use them, what to do, yadda yadda yadda.... You would know that if you read some other posts I've made. Some here to this very board with Original Work, and they're looking pretty good. Alot of it I'm busy with, and this was just to break it up.

You also need to pay attention too. Do you remember what the skin's for JO look like? I didn't Just copy/past/align. I ALTERED the textures. I also created originals for this skin. I can post a picture comparison of Tavion, Jedi Trainer, And mine if you wish.... Hell, I'll even throw jan into the mix so you can tell I didn't use her face!

And the stuff directed at hapslash was unneccessary. His post had little to do with ego. The man was defending his ideals and stating his opinion, the same thing that everyone else has done.

And knights in shining armor? If that's how you feel, Then why're you defending Mark-Li?!

Mark, This is the THIRD time you've walked into a thread and flamed the original poster. I think you'd better check the guidelines of LucasForums before you do it again, it may just be against the rules. I personally am sick of it, and clearly, others are too. For third time, post some constructive criticism, not this garbage. You're only making a fool of yourself.

"My work speaks for itself" - I still haven't seen any skins from you that are all that speciel, so you don't seem to have any room to talk. Try to think before future posts.

Droidekas: Ego? I didn't see anything remotely resembling ego in Hap's post. He didn't post comments about himself, he only posted comments about the skin, Mark_Li, and skinning in general. Go look up the word 'ego' :P

In the process of altering the breastplate and the strap for it...

Also adding more fine detail to her shirt, and a little better shading to her.. uhmm.. rounded surfaces.....

A few other things too are being changed as well. It'll be a couple of days yet before I think she'll be done, as I'm working on some other things in skinnng, as well as other projects I've had going for a while.

and to the comments about not looking "jedi-ish", do the jedi trainers look like traditional jedi? no they dont; this skin matches well with the themes in the game.

Not every female model has to be Lara Croft. In fact, it would really make things rather boring. My own opinion is to ignore all requests to make her "sexier." She actually looks very good as she is, although the one suggestion I would have is to eliminate the bit of skin she's showing on her lower thigh. It seems almost out of place, although this cuold just be some personal thought. Then again, many are saying she does not look very Jedi-like [although whomever said that the Jedi Trainer does not either is quite correct, and so she fits well with him]. Even so, it does look slightly out of place as it is.

Oh, and Mark, allow me to add my voice to all of those who are telling you to find something useful to say or to stuff it. Yes, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but some opinions are best kept unvoiced.

Just so nobody gets me confused, I will label each of my parts-

(Comment) Well, seeing as how it is, for the most part a cut and paste job, there is not much to talk about.

(Criticism) The face lacks any kind of structure or detail.
(Solution) Try using more than just two colors on that part.

(Criticism) Undergarmet mesh looks uber flat.
(Solution) Quit using noise filters with motion blur only. Add depth to it before you add any texture.

(Criticism) Not an original skin.
(Solution) Start from scratch. Really, is it so hard to do? If you are going to do a quick 30 minute cut hap and slash job, do us a favor and don't show anyone. If you write an essay and you use someone elses work, you don't expect an experienced teacher not to run it through a plagurize checking program. Learn how to use the program other than the select tool and make something original. You will learn far more, and become far better for it. Even if it looks like crap, you can post it up here. Expect to get some honest opinions, but if you are serious about it, you will find what is wrong and be able to fix them. And if it still doesn't look good, get rid of it and start on a new one. The more you make them, the better you will get. How do you think I got from this:

I was referring to the difference between my first skin, and one of my latest skins. Not that my latest is the best in the galaxy.

A person I admire most once said "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." So keep going! Your talent is evident and I misjudged it from the first screenshots.

Kman, thanks for explaining your signature, it has been quite disturbing, it sounded kind of "professional wannabe". And It would have been just sad had it been self proclaimed. Just a critic, I would love to see a more serious tutorial on skinning. You can clearly manage more than sprites. I think the skin looks good. It's a shame that there are only 3 types of female skins in JKO. I keep trying to find skins for my fiance so that she'll want to play more and I think this one is pretty good. My suggestion would be to make it mostly one piece and addd those textures over it. I'm not big on showing too much skin (I don't think it looks overly star warsish) (opinion based on the movies). Anyway...

Also, the reason that Jan doesn't get more skins made from her is that STUPID HAND! Obviously the modeler for her didn't have us in mind when he/she created it.

Boy, ask for an opinion...
Anyway, I like the skin (considering tavion and jeditrainer are my least favorite, that's saying something), especially the face, there needs to be more female faces (jan's nasty, and don't get me started on tavion the court jester). I think people don't understand what you were going for (uh, a female jedi trainer) and as such it NEEDS to look like male jedi trainer. Some people though. I can't speak for anyone else, but being a total freakin noob, modifying existing skins is about the only way to get into skinning (i know you're not a noob infinity), so people should lighten up. If someone has modified an existing skin, they know it, so just tell them how you like the changes. Most people I know make skins ( or models, or whatever ) cause they like them and think maybe someone else will too, not to get praise. Of course, I don't post anything (afraid of the death threats).

I really like the looks of this skin. And I agree, the face looks sweet. Hope you are up to releasing it soon.

Very, very well done. One problem though, it doesn't look like it represents the Jedi, more like the Dark Side. The Jedi are a peaceful race, while this skin is more like a badass one, perfectly like the Dark Side.

been thru that.... does the in-game trainer look like a "jedi"? not really. this one matches the game theme very nicely; and the jedi are not a race, they are an order, and the new jedi order, well, isnt so set up to be as wise and peaceful as the knights of the old republic

Sorry, I've been away for so long... between some things in real life and... well.. a few other games I was wanting to try out.... :)

Let's just say I got pretty sidetracked.

I should be back into skinning soon. I think I'm gonna start doing some modelling as well, but I'll likely finish the current skins and send them out before I start any new projects....

I'm not exactly sure how long till she'll be out. I've got a couple of things I want to try for the look, and I've still got some other projects I "Should" be working on first. ;)

Anyway, I'll do my best to keep you guys updated, and thanks for sticking around the thread. Should have more for you soon.

i think it looks great and its a fantastic idea. Yes the face and shoulder/chest area still needs more detail, but you said its incomplete so i'm trusting you will do that. I think on the face, the eyes look a little to dark and droopy if you can help that, and she looks kind of like a druggie or something :p.

well, personally, i think it could be released as-is, although i havent played with it, so i maybe there are problems that can only be seen in-game

but basically, it sounds like you are busy, and i think, it may be better for you to get this one done and over with; before it gets placed on the back-burner (again)

cuz, we really need good-looking female skins that arent jan clones and/or are gratuitously nude
