It looks tempting for sure, but I've never been a fan of the way combat works in Baldur's Gate 1 & 2.

I'm really going to try and like this game though.

It's a RPG that uses Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition as its system. It will enable people to build adventures of their own and distribute them online, and even allow one player to be the GM (gamemaster). The GM will be able to change scenery, control the NPCs, and even communicate with the players through the NPCs.

Pretty much Baldurs Gate, aimed at multiplayer. Going back to the Pen and Paper RPG style.

Com Raven

NWN is a great-looking 3rd Edition Dungeon&dragons rpg that is build out of 4 columns:

-60-100 singleplayer campaing
-multiplayer for up to 64 guys per server, with the ability to link them through portals
-dungeon master client, who can change things in real-time, as he can in pen&paper rpg
-the toolset, a powerful editor which the devs themselves used to build the game

Frankly, I have to admit that I think that both "Drakar och Demoner", WoD and Western have better rule systems. Actually, most pen and paper RPGs have better systems. Here in Sweden, it never really established itself, since there were far superior products on the market already, especially Drakar och Demoner, who really dominated the fantasy RPG genre over here.

Oh, and this is only my opinion of the 2nd ed. rules. I haven't tried the new rules. But the old one sucked pretty bad.

EDIT:

Why did it suck? Because it was one of the most cliché, unrealistic and non-flexible set of rules available, especially regarding characters, and prone to "beard-" or "cheese-"gaming. If anyone mentions his 54th level paladin again, I'll riot.

Com Raven
06-12-2002, 03:35 PM
well, to be far you have to take 2nd Ed rules into consideration....

those rules are older than Shadowrun , which spawned 3 editions...

those rules are from 89/90, and were good for their time...

3rd Ed is great, and I love it...

*commits Wraith 8 to an asylum for not liking JK*

"let him out when he's learnt his lesson boys, not a day before!" :D

Anyway, on an RPG note (as I know a bit about them)

The D&D 3rd ed rules are much better than the 2nd Ed. This difference is clearly illustrated in the Starwars RPG which works much better now than it did when it was a West End Games product.

I'm still not sure wether or not I prefer the White Wolf d10 rules or not, it's definitely better than the Shadowrun rules, the 3rd ed rules are revitalising the RPG community in my area...

If anyone mentions his 54th level paladin again, I'll riot

I know this type of person, they don't get the point of role-playing

and prone to "beard-" or "cheese-"gaming.

Every rules system for any game has loopholes that can be exploited by some one who knows how. I had to get quite good at this to be ready for my players tricks!

Never played Drakar och Demoner (I'm guessing Dragons and Demons) so I can't compare the two.

Oh and Never Winter nights is going to have very little in common with diablo (the game which you complete by 'left-clicking' for 6 hours) or diablo 2 (the game which you complete by 'left AND right clicking' for 12 hours - did you see what they did there!) It will be a much more involved game along the lines of Baldurs Gate, but with a GOOD game mechanic, and better graphics.

I'd take WoD's d10 system over D&D any day of the week.

And well, my main 'thing' against D&D is the fact that it is so inflexible. All thieves are the same, all fighters the same, etc. What it comes down to is that D&D is a system made for combat. Nothing else. WOD, however, can be used conveniently into political campaigns, and other campaigns that involves non-combat situations. I have played Vampire campaings where we spent three meetings (once a week) without rolling a single combat dice. And it was thrilling all the way. I doubt I can say that for my ventures into the world of D&D. D&D is more about what weapon skills you bought, and how many "+2 comb of dragonslaying" you have.

Drakar och Demoner is a swedish system, and I guess you won't find it outside Sweden. It started almost twenty years ago, and is based on a d20. What it is better at, though, it that it allows players to be more imaginative with creating characters and buying skills, unlike in D&D. Sorry guys, I have only bad experiences with D&D.

And any, ANY pen and paper RPG that is based on experience points in the way of D&D is bound to turn into a lot of number crounching and arguing between players. That equals lots of boring gaming hours. The idea of levels works great in computer games. But in pen and paper? Come on! Unrealistic and inconvenient game design, that's what I call it.

Com Raven

well, you find powergamers everywhere...

once while we played SR during a con, a guy came by telling tales of his 6 armed street samurai who had 6 ares predator, could survive a barrage from a ship turret and survive in vacuum...

I just thought for myself: "now which part of "ROLEPLAYING" is so hard to get ??

3rd D&D makes great steps towards ease of use and customization....

Com Raven
06-13-2002, 06:11 PM
well, our D&D campaign so far consits mainly of crime investigations and a war between cults...

in most cases, that meant 0-1 fight per session...

D&D as the advantage of the best traditional campaign setting, the Fprgotten Realms...

NWN is going to be the thing to do untill SWG comes out :)

AND DONT EVEN COMPARE THIS GAME TO DIABLO 2 !!!

Diablo2 isnt an RPG, it's a hack and slash game, clickfest !

Now Never Winter Nights will dominate the sale charts untill SWG comes out :)

ow right...

South-Korea is playing! gotta watch Guus Hiddink in action guys! :)

The 3rd Ed system drastically alters this, and also makes non-combat adventures possible. Give it a try before hammering it!

Yeah, I know it's not another Diablo....but in looks it is alot like diablo and that was just a simple comparison. I know they're going to be alot different......You can't be an elven rogue/thief like i'm going to be in diablo

setsuko
06-20-2002, 04:55 PM
Hmmm... well, sounds like I have to take a look at the 3rd edition, then. From what I have heard before, and now, it seems to have bettered itself. After all, if even non-combat characters are playable in the new rules, something drastic must have been done!

After all, since I'll play NWN, I'll get my chance to check out the new system.

Gaalgoth
06-21-2002, 05:36 AM
Well, NWN didn't quite live up to my expectations....the multiplayer seems a little, well, i guess hectic is teh best word. how about this, whenever any of you get the game lets all make a private multiplayer game and play together? That way we can play with people we already know and get a more personal feel.

RoyalGuard
06-21-2002, 07:05 AM
Good idea Gaalgoth, I'm getting it in the next couple of weeks, and I'll be testing out the MP with some friends over a LAN (I was going to try and convert a table-top campaign). We had lots of fun with Vampire Redemption this way, and that was a very poor game on its own merits. (the WOD MOD made it really).

In terms of gameplay and single player involvement, better or worse than Baldur's Gate 2?

Gaalgoth
06-21-2002, 07:51 AM
I never played bg2. The gameplay is pretty good and single player is fun......multiplayer is just a little chaotic. I think the only reason I'm having problems with it is cause I'm still in teh diablo mentality....I'm not used to such low hitpoints =).

RoyalGuard

aahh, the plague of a first level character ;)

Gaalgoth
06-21-2002, 10:06 AM
Yeah....but after flipping around I've decided on a human ranger. And I'm hooked now...the game is bad ass in single player. Get a couple of friends in for multi and I'm sure it will be awesome as well.

Baldur's Gate 2 was an awsome game, a lot like Neverwinter.

It comes out here on the 25th, I think, I'm definetly gonna get it.

Torn between a Mage and a Ranger... Mages are pretty hard to get good I can tell you that and they have to be supported by Warrior characters.

RoyalGuard
06-23-2002, 05:36 AM
A find a cleric is always a good bet, armour and healing magic help you get through that tricky single-figure hitpoint stage....

Gaalgoth
06-23-2002, 12:07 PM
The problem in this game is that rangers aren't all taht great....track and stuff like that are useless so it would be better to be a fighter and call yourself a ranger.

Gaelin Masek
06-24-2002, 12:27 AM
Track? what is that?

Doesn't anybody else think the name "Fighter" is a bit... crap. I mean why not, Warrior or Soldier or Swordsman or something! but not "Fighter".

Sorcerer w/ a few levels of monk or rouge to make the AC acceptable. sure you don't get the best spells but at least you can avoid some of the damage. I haven't attemted making a module yet; but if I do, I'll make one about the adventures of boo the giant space something.

thanks setsuko. I wish there where prestige classes and some way to create more feats. we need leadership so we can have more than one henchman durring SP. if they ever release a expansion pack they should incorperate the epic level rules (book coming out this fall/ winter) and that series of general class type rules (eg song and shadow, or something like that). some of those high level abilitys in ToB would be really nice. of course then there would be cheese tactics wit hthe new multiclassing rules, that ability to get 10 attacks a round with the ability for all attacks to act like a sneak attack. :D oh well, I guess that's all for now.:bdroid1:

one more thing, wouldn't it be great if we were able to discover a race of space faring rodents who used the force to manipulate the events in the galaxy. we all know that boo was the real master behind the events of the BG series.
