I like in order:

X-Wing Alliance
TIE Fighter
Rogue Squadron (i don't think rs is a x-wing game though, but it has good graphics)

I should flame you so bad for saying Rogue Squadron.

I think the best is TIE Fighter. Then X-Wing. Then probably X-Wing Alliance then X-Wing vs TIE Fighter.

TIE Fighter still is the best space combat sim out there. X-Wing was good, but had a few quirkds that TIE fighter corrected. X-Wing alliance gets the nod over XvT because it had a storyline. Both have comprible multiplayer verstions (with XvT being a bit better than XWA). TIE Fighter was the step that improved it all, but they never were able to improve the game much beyond TIE Fighter.

RogueOne

1.X-Wing Alliance
2.X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter (Because of multiplayer and the Balance of Power addon)
3.X-Wing
4.Tie Fighter

Some people might say that's weird. Is it?

Just another useless post of mindless drivel from RogueOne.

what's wrong with Rogue Squadron? I thought they made a pretty good storyline for it.

I agree with you that TIE Fighter has the best storyline. I like chasing down the defectors, my favorite battle was fighting the ripoblus and dimoks, i still have to beat that game, i'm only on battle 9, so that means 4 more battles to go! X-Wing Alliance and Rogue Squadron have the best graphics though, and X-Wing Alliance lets you fly ALL the ships (in skirmish and multiplayer) the thing i liked best about tie fighter was the different cockpits for the different ties.

Besides people who play it calling it a Space Combat Simulator????

Moff_Kioet
03-05-2001, 03:24 PM
ok it's a flight combat simulator not a space combat simulator.

paulbarnard
03-07-2001, 02:18 AM
Nope. Games like F-18, Janes Fighters, and MS Flight Simulator are Combat simulators.

Maybe unusual FPS.

Who cares, as long it's a combat simulator.

paulbarnard
03-09-2001, 03:07 PM
But it's not. It's too simple a game to be anything flight/combat simulator. Aracade shooter plain and simple.

Garindan

yeah, it's action/arcade

I just bought "TIE fighter" after all the reviews on the WEB (massage boards mostly)and the low price $9.00 bucks http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif and to tell the truth is a very good game, not only flight sims or whatever, but as a PC game, the difficult level on hard should be renamed to "frustrating" though, but it rulz
about rogue squad, I have read terrible review all over the WEB.

well, you'll be sorry when there's an editor out for rogue squadron and you can't find rs on ebay or the stores.

I agree, RS is more of an arcade flight shooter than a "flight combat simulator." Big difference.

Gee, having played TIE Figher a long time ago when it was on floppy, I remember a Magazine saying, if you can't beat battle one (any mission) hang it up now.

BeastMaster

Geez, nice vote of confidence there!

I've played maybe the first half of TIE Fighter years and years ago (before leaving high school.

Describe the mission for me; maybe my XWA experience will help.

thats oddd, is not that small

I can beat the levels.... but not all the exta point's (aka bonus goals) like this one (dificult stuff like):
a light calamari cruiser inside a mine field with 5 A wings, 6 x-wings all loaded with rockets against you... alone, inside a stupid ugly looking gunboat.

Disable stuff. Use your ions and blow stuff up later at your leisure.

Minefield surrounding a cruiser with fighter escorts. . . *thinks*

Yeah, try to engage the A-wings outside the minefield. Take them out first, then kill the Exes when you have time.

Remember to always kill the lead fighters first; it breaks down your enemy's morale and makes the fight easier for you. Use your targeting systems to kill "red 1," then "red 2," and so on.

After the fighters are wiped out, turn to the minefield. If I'm remembering right, the cruiser is disabled (that's why the minefield's there).

The trick to minefields is to be patient: target a mine then soar toward it at full-throttle. don't try to take out the field in one pass: just go in one side, kill as many mines as you can, and speed out the other side. After your shields regenerate, make another pass. Repeat until you have a clear shot at the cruiser.

As for MP; if you have a high-end machine, I'd go with XWA. The graphics are better (if you have plenty of extra room), and IIRC there're more fighters.

I'm also not sure how active the XvT ship editing community is. For XWA, there're dozens of fan-made opts, as well as the famous NCA patch and the XWAUpgrade project.

I would think XWA is more readily available, although both are found in the Collectors Edition or whatever it is.

now thats cool!!!
so if I shoot the "leader" (example Awing red 1), the whole group will not be that darn hard to kill?
that's intresting.
paulbarnard: your tip works fine... but still can't beat the gold A-wings(5) + blue X-wings(3) http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif
but im going to try the tip of BeastMaster!

I like this game...

ok, another question,
how to destroy a light calamari cruiser with a TIE fighter ... no mines, no missles (in your ship), etc..
any technique?

paulbarnard

never shoot at it for more than a few seconds, attack the engines, take out turrets, weave.

BeastMaster

Killing the lead ships won't necessarily make it easier (it would if you were flying against real pilots), but it'll seem that way. Lead ships are usually at a higher level than their subordinates. Killing them first means they won't be able to attack you when you're hunting down their "children."

As for the cruiser, try "shaving" it.

("Shaving" is when you make quick, darting passes targeting weapons mounts (or comm gear, or shield gens, or whatever), and ignoring everything else. It takes some skill to spot a target and hit it while zooming past at high-speed, so you may need to practice. It's particularly effective when you need to capture something [relatively] intact.)

After the guns are silent, aim at the engines. If you were flying against a Star Destroyer, I'd tell you to target the shield generators, but mon cal ships keep their generators inside where you can't hit them.

You'll have to take down the shields the old-fashioned way.

thanks a lot...
I thought that StarCraft was #1, but this one is a lot more "adrenaline pumping", this game kick ass!!!
I'm on battle VI an those advanced tie fighters are a pain in the ....

how many rocket's take to destroy a capital ship turbo laser turret?

BeastMaster
05-01-2001, 08:53 PM
Hella lot.

Turrets can shoot down missiles coming at them. The only way to use projectiles on 'em is to get another fighter to "bait" them --to draw their fire while you take them out.

For turrets its best to use snap-shot laser fire.

One mo-o-ore thing;

Learn to weave. There's a space combat manoeuvre called the Wotan Weave (it's a Rebel technique, but TIEs can certainly use it).

The Wotan Weave is like a cross between a barrel-roll and a sidestep. It's like when a fighter-jet peels out of formation, only repeated into a spiral.

What you do:
First, thumb the roll button (whatever you've set it to), then pull the stick slightly back or forward as you roll.

What you see:
Y'see, when you roll, the starfield pinwheels around the centre of your view. When you're weaving correctly, the centre of the pinwheel will be about one- or eleven-o'clock high (or low, if you're pushing forward).

Don't get space-sick. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif

This little maneouvre makes you almost (note: not completely) impossible for a gunner to hit. The downside is that it also makes it almost impossible for you to hit anything.

The trick to attacking cap ships is to learn how to come out of a weave, fire off a shot or two, and go back into a weave (in another direction).

Remember: whenever you're flying straight enough to target something, you're flying straight enough to be targeted.

which one is the BEST joystick ?
I hate this one...

BeastMaster

Depends on how you fly.

I have a Gravis Blackhawk Digital. It'd probably be easy to rip right out of the base, but it's perfect for my flying style since I don't do wrenching manoeuvres anyway.

is not accurate...
the precition thing is just a lie...
or is just that i cant adjust the dead zone like in XWA... this joystick rocks for needforspeed, but that's all
