View Full Version : Help with mirrors

I can't seem to get my mirror to work. The face that I am trying to turn into a mirror becomes either invisible or grey boxes. I have tried the "mirror" and "portal" shaders, and I AM placing a misc_portal_surface right in front of the surface.

My map is at http://www.isomedia.com/homes/nickerso/jk2/1room.zip - if I am missing any files, please let me know. I have 1room.bsp and 1room.map.

Texture the surface you want to be a mirror with system/mirror_yavin (it's the only one I've gotten to work) and keep the misc_portal_surface within 64 units of the surface of the mirror.

That doesn't work - it just makes the surface invisible. Any other ideas? :(

Eh, not really sure. Those surfaces are really quirky. The only way I got mine to work was the following proces:
1) Making one mirror like that
2) It not working
3) Adding a second mirror two hallways away
4) Having the first mirror suddenly working when i did that, but not the second mirror
5) Deleting the second mirror
6) The first still working

I probably did something else in the process, but honestly, I have no idea what. :)

I dunno what Ravenites did to the mirror but they surely did something cuz it doesn't work like it did in other q3 powered games. So far I've noticed that it won't work on a brush which stands all alone by itself and it will certainly not work on a b-model, like in your case,
nickersonm. (You just applied mirror texture to a func_glass ). It also won't work on a detail brush. (or at least it didn't work in my case). I only managed to get it to work by applying the mirror texture to a brush face on a brush which is..how'd I say this.. a part of bigger construction/structure. Like for example if you have a room and you spit one wall in 5 brushes (so that there is 1 brush in the middle) like this:

and then apply mirror tex to that brush (=face), it should work. However, it may also work if you apply the mirror texture to the whole wall. Odd.

Thanks Xcom, that worked! My mirrors now work.

The only problem I have is that they are really dark, especially from far away. As you get closer, they get lighter. Am I doing something wrong?

No, it's supposed to be like this. For best performance, I suggest you live like this, otherwise you'd need to make new shader.

what is the difference from a "brush" and a "detailed brush" ?

Read. (http://richdiesal.jedioutcastmaps.com/tutorials/gc102lsn3.html)

If that one doesn't make sense, read all of them. :p
