View Full Version : Another Yoda Saber

06-22-2002, 03:59 PM
I know that now is a bad time to post a yoda saber, since two people are already working on one. BUT SCREW IT!!! (j/k)

Anyway, this is my second model and I would greatly appriciate some constructive criticism to improve it.

u dont need tempest
u dont want tempest
all u need are the tempest plugins (for .md3 and .map import/export), which i have thoughtfully put in the files section of my mod site here (http://www.btinternet.com/~howe_alison/brothers)

Very nice, it's comin along great. I was wondering if you are gonna make the saber blade shorter than the normal size.

06-23-2002, 07:43 PM
That looks absolutely brilliant!

06-23-2002, 08:25 PM
Looks great! :)
Nice blade too

06-24-2002, 12:13 PM
Ok, I unwrapped the hilt and I almost finished skinning it. I did a test today to check if everything is going smoothly with the skin and when I tried to export it as a md3, it gave me an error saying that the uv map is not corresponding to the texture. I know what it means but it's really strange since mapped and I skinned every part of the saber. To give it a try I ignored the error and renamed everything and created the skin file. When I was done I exported the model and loaded it up in MD3. But now the texture is not showing up.

Please help me so I can release this greenbladed motherfuka.

i dunno if i remember wrong but that emitter guard at the top of it didn't seem to wrap that far around the emitter in the movie. otherwise great job man.

Lookin Good! I can't wait!

06-24-2002, 04:12 PM
Some reference pics for your enjoyment... :D

06-24-2002, 04:43 PM
THX man, to bad I didn't get these ref. pics earlier. Until now, I used the one from the posters and movie.

BTW, I fixed the peoblem and now everything works fine. I restarted the texure because I didn't like the first1. I'll be taking my time to make it as exact as possible.

I can do the texture myself, but I believe that I might need some1 to make the shading and lightning. I heard that a reflection shader could work too.

06-24-2002, 04:48 PM
No prob. I would have given them to you earlier but I was isolated from the world last week.

06-25-2002, 05:17 PM
Ok, I got the saber in game but the texture doesn't show up. It all started whn I exported the model from max. The exporteer give me an error saying that the texture does not fit the mesh 1:1 (many people though said that their getting the same error but it's not causing any problems). Later I opened it in MD3 viewer. The texture was showing without any problems and everything was fine. However, when I loaded the skin file, the texture disappeared and everything that was showing up was the my saber in white. I ignored this and got it in the game anyway. The result was a gray saber that was perfectly alligned to the hand.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

06-26-2002, 02:49 AM
I really could use some help

06-26-2002, 03:17 AM
I'm with you, I'm also having this problem with the skin not applying. I also get the "One to One" error when exporting from GMax, but I think this is probably due to breaking verts while unwrapping.

Update With Texture :

Saber with my crappy textures (http://www.geocities.com/fallenangel_nyc86/Updatesaber1tex.txt)

Saber with a glowing blade. (http://www.geocities.com/fallenangel_nyc86/updateglowtex.txt)

I know the textures suck, but I never made textures before. So comments would be aprriciated. If any1 wants to modify the textures or redo them your welcome to do it.

BTW, the problem that I posted above is thisll accouring. It would be nice if some1 who has any tips would help.

06-26-2002, 09:14 AM
iam no help of your problem, but i had to see your saber is awesome, imean it, wish i could make things like that, ive only made little things,

u using GMAX? idont understand it so im stuck wiv milkshape even tho u can do sum cool stuff wiv it,

if ucan, would u be willing to give me tips or something that will help me to model things like saber hilts cause it will help me improve on my modelling skills:) or a good tutorial 4 milkshape, please really appreciate it and hope 2 be as good as you at them one day.

06-26-2002, 09:41 AM
awesome model and skin, really amazing work :)

06-26-2002, 09:44 AM
It's just all a matter of practice. The more time you spend on your model, the better it's gonna get. Just start of doing simple things like creating a cylinder and start scaling and moving the vertices around. I'm using 3ds max but for low poly game modeling gmax is exactly the same.
Check out this thread for tutorials:
Later on, u can apply the skills that you learned in the tutrials in your own saber. Remember, it's all a matter of practice. Just create some cylinders and edit them...

06-26-2002, 09:55 AM
I can't just sit here and watch you diss yourself about your texturing. It's one of the best Yoda Saber Hilts I've seen so far. (Yoda is my favorite Character and I can't wait till his Character model comes out). I think it would be neat to learn how to make Saber hilts but I'd rather make Character Models but I don't know how  I'd be glad to be someone's apprentice (or Padawan hehehe):yodaball:

06-26-2002, 10:10 AM
thx for that help, ill will probs try 2moz anyway... yea i feel your hilt is cool and the texture ifeel is fine, it rules in fact icouldnt do better, icouldnt do it at all, ifeel evry fing one person cant do, must be praised, so i bow 2 u in common desencey :P

thx neway xx

06-26-2002, 11:41 AM
Well you said you were going for exact, so i'm inclined to point out that the guard thing that sticks off the top has rounded corners, yours are pointy. i'm sure this doesnt REALLY matter, in fact, you could probably use a shader to get it to go away, but if you wanted to just round those corners up then it would be identical to the ref- pics. great work.

hey DarthFallen do u play MoHAA? Have u heard of the clan |SS|?

06-26-2002, 12:42 PM
I c what u mean klorel, I just fixed it. I completly forgot about it. THX

I used to play MoH:AA but I stopped three months ago. I cant remember a clan called |SS|. This might sound stupid but do u play CS? Do u know a clan called [C}{K]. There was a clanwar that we had and there was a dude with a very similar name.

Thx to Klorel, I fixed the upper part and rounded it up. I believe that it's very identical to the original one and not bad for my second model.

Wanna get it in game? Post your e-mail below and I'll send u the sdk.

I got it in Game:

I'd like to have it (if it's alright with you, when I get my new JK2 Site up, I will put it in my files section) LiNuXProggy@cs.com

Impressive. Does this mean it will be available for download soon? :D

how do you get that thirdperson view?

That's something I too am working on. heh. Also, is there a way to take a screenshot in multiplayer w/o the console w/o having to do the devmap thing? For some reason whenever I do the devmap thing, it screws up my game. Dunno why. Then whenever I jsut type screenshot it takes one but it has that big ugly console there, when I type levelshot it says cheats are not enabled.

06-27-2002, 08:39 PM
Third Person is very angles are simple. Start a game, doesn't matter if it's single player or multi as long cheats are enabled. Then type
cg_thirdpersonangle (0-360)

To remove the health and stance screen type:
cg_draw2d (0-1)

If u dont want the console to showup while yiur taking a screenshot, then bind screenshot:
bind (a-z) screenshot

Does it work if the game is paused?

06-28-2002, 12:44 AM
Congrats on the new saber hilt. it looks fantastic. could you send it to me at

thnx. Oh what programs did you use to create the hilt?

06-28-2002, 01:52 AM
I used the usual, 3ds Max for the model and Adobe Photoshop Pro for the Textures. I encourage any one who is still questioning himself about editing JK2 to start. Itís all about the first step and the SECOND MODEL. I just have to do some slight modifications and Iíll send it to you guys. I might even submit the saber to jediknight2.net or massassi.

06-28-2002, 02:22 AM
wow thanks for the advice DarthFallen. I never started Modding because i thought i wasnt good enough so there wasnt any point to it but since no one has made any good saber hilts i liked, until yours, i will definetly start to create my own saber hilts that i hope to share with all of you.

Oh and when your done with this project a little advise, PLEASE work on a new Maul saber hilt, i got sick of using the double sided one. it would be cool if someone made a sith lightsaber to go along with Darth Maul. a single sided one :)

06-28-2002, 10:11 AM
That saber is so beastly man. nice job, send it to me at Pycho13@hotmail.com plz

06-28-2002, 11:24 PM
I included a original size handle and one that is a bit bigger. In addition to that I aslo added custom icons.
