Alright, here's a picture of the IG-88 model I'm working on. I know
that it may not look like much right now. So go and ahead and
laugh at me if you wish. I'm still having to work out the hard to
make details on his body. And does anybody know what his
hands really look like? Or are they even hands at all? Well, take
a look and see what you think.

i know its still in the begining of its creation, but in the movie, i beleive he is really tall. yours seems a little on the short side, but what do i know. Also since he has no accualy hand, how will that work on bones and such when taunting? Also, you need to get more of those little gizmos he has on his torso. most of them can be skin too.

Who's 8T-88?

Lucko Mabri
07-01-2002, 03:32 PM
8t-88 is the bloke (i mean droid) who stole kyle katarns data disk so he could decipher it and find out where the valley of the jedi was so he could exchage the information for money with the dark jedi. Oh and this is from the game Star Wars : Jedi Knight Dark Forces II.

Looks really good so far!

8T-88 was a whole other looking droid...he was like the one that decided what C-3P0 and R2-D2 were to do in ROTJ, in Jabba's Palace!

IG-88 is different looking...and IMO he is looking really good on the model being made atm.

Not really. All these modellers leaving are little nerds anyway. I'm sure they get no respect or social interaction in real life. When they come to internet message boards where they are "popular" for doing a cool model and they are put down, harrassed, or whatever, it reminds them of their loser real lives and they cant take it. Not a sterotype for all modellers, but why would you let anonymous people bully you into leaving? Same thing probably happens in real life. Mandalorians, Vader, etc are some of my fav models but the people who create them need to grow up socially instead of spending their time on the computer all day whining about "rushing" their projects.

KBell

Its not that Easy to take the place of a well experienced modeler .It takes a lonnggg time to get the hang of modeling, that means, creating an alomost exact replica of a model onto a modeling program, cutting the polycount down, making skeletons, testing, asking for help, testing some more, and finally atcually releasing a very thought out and nearly flawless model that most of the community has chipped in on. So its not that IF someone will take their place, its WHEN. So before you call them little nerds who get no social interaction, think about what they have done for US.

well, i would just like to say that i think 8T88 looks more like 8D8 (not to be confused). 8D8 is the droid in ROTJ roasting that poor Gonk's feet off in Jabbas Palace.

and if anyone needs a good picture of IG-88, i would check out both the New Essential Guide to Characters and the Essential Guide to Droids. i believe that IG-88 has a thumb, a trigger finger, and a plate that acts as the other 3 fingers

Actually I've been working with the model quite a bit over the last week.

The first thing I did when I received it was to take a look at the poly count. 'D' mentioned that it was too high to include any more modeled detail, but I wanted to see if I could shave it down a bit.

Next thing I know I'm going through, altering this, tweaking that, and there's no hope in stopping me!! I know,... I have a problem. I'm a freak for detail and accuracy,... I just can't help it.

Now don't get me wrong, what 'D' sent me was a "Nice frickin' model!". And nothing I've altered could have been done without all his hard work to begin with. I didn't make the whole model, I just refined it.

The reason I haven't shown anything yet is that I didn't want to post 'till I had the go ahead from him. Now with that said, here's a picture of what I've done. If you're not happy with the revisions, don't roast me alive. Just wave your torches and pitchforks around a bit and I'll clumsily stalk my way back to my old & forgotten castle dungeon.

http://wat.midco.net/eggnog1/ig88-modeltest.jpg

http://wat.midco.net/eggnog1/ig88-skintest.jpg

After all the revisions were made, I found that the model had dropped approx. 400 polys.

Hey that looks great Hapslash! :)

Just one thing.... I was looking at my 3 3/4" figure of IG-88 and it shows that his hands are pincer-like claws that are not connected.

Keep up the good work man.
IT'S REALLY LOOKING GREAT!!! :D

HapSlash
08-18-2002, 02:33 AM
That's just the way that the toys were made, I presume so that it would be easier to get the guns in and out.

The actual movie prop had metal rings for the hands, which were shaped as such. The wider part was made so that a gun's
handle could fit into it, while the thinner area would be wrapped around the trigger guard for extra support.

A shader to give him a metallic sheen would be pretty nice, but I'm not very knowledgeable in that area. I'll probably just
tackle the basic layer of the skin and let 'D' decide where to go from there. Having the lights on his head glow would be great
as well,...

KMan
08-18-2002, 02:52 AM
Actually, just do the same effect that the other droids have with the specularity map.

And to get lights and stuff to glow-
Make a new layer in Photoshop (If you are using it)
Draw in the glow that you want.
Save that as a new image and then resize it to like 25% or 50% original size (you wont need all that detail, and it will save on memory) then just have that image load up with the shader as an additive effect. If you want me to help you with that, just let me know when you get to the finishing stages.

VampireHunterD
08-18-2002, 04:21 AM
yeah D, you gotta make the gun, (you're awesome at weapons)

Its not the that modelers are working slower and slower, its because people keep pestering the modeler to change the smallest details, which makes it take longer, although -Tercero- loves the critique. It helps make the Anakin model great. and people aren't playing as much because there hasn't been any wood to the fire to keep JKII alive, and plus more people are wanting to try out modeling, so they don';t play. but I am sure if Raven releases the key to animation, there will be a huge fire to burn in the Jedi Outcast community. But, if you are leaving, we won't stop you.. its your choice.

aL BeasTie
08-29-2002, 05:17 AM
It's a shame that Shoemaker is leaving, there's not many ppl doing cool Classic Trilogy characters. But it must be very tiresome to take complaints and un-constructive criticism. But half the time it comes from a highly critical teenager (u know the kind who watch movie just to say "That's so fake" every 2 minutes)

These people are rarely liked as by other people, they tend to wind up lonley in their old age and spend there money on perverse sexual practices that you have to travel to strange foreign countries so it can be practiced legally.

But in short these people are of no use to the rest of the world, I suggest not coming here for a while. Work on your model and do it YOUR WAY. Release it to jkii.net, and tell everyone where they can put it.

This way you can have the fulfillment of completeing your model and kicking some arse with it. (I mean that was the idea wasn't it)

Remember people no company in the world would make people work under these conditions (except Nike). This is some high demanding work to have to put up with other people's outlooks and expectations of YOUR PERSONAL ARTWORK. And put them into place as well as demands for your work to be finished within a time frame. Plus in this case it's all in YOUR OWN TIME. I'm unemployed right now and I don't have free time often!

If models were made this way for games (they would be some awesome models for JK2 instead of those Spandex Jedi's) Game companies would be taken to court for In-Humane working conditions.

Modeller's/Skinner's - Do your own thing, do what you wanted to do in the first place. If you listen to too much advice you'll be up all night adding an extra light on your new Darth Vader model when you know that even on a cosmetic level IT'S ****ING POINTLESS!!!!

Food for thought, or print it out an line your bird cage!

woodrodius, you're right, Matt Shoemaker is not leaving. He was just saying HIS farewell TO trowa, who is the one leaving. but this thread needs to get back on topic.. Keep up the good work, and let's see this model get finished!

Sounds Risky

No worries, I'm not going. I still need to finish my Ithorian damnit, and I intend to do so.

Oh and the model is looking quite nice. It's nice to finally see eyes on it.

Sorry that there hasn't been any updates lately, but I've been taking a much needed vacation from editing.

When I was working on the maping I found lots of areas where I had to go back and re-edit the mesh so I could achieve a certain look. After having to do this several times I eventually just decided to take a break. I even loaded in kyle to compare the two models, and noticed that IG88 was actually shorter. This had been bugging me for a while now, and after I re-adjusted him to meet kyles height It looked much better overall. Here's the last image put together before I stopped, but I didn't feel that it was worth posting.

I've also been thinking about going in and adding some more detail to the mesh, right now he's a little over 2K in polys, but he doesn't have any caps in him yet.

Good to hear back from you on this, Hap :) He's looking very good, can't wait to see him done. I like his pinchers as they are, definitely makes him more distinctly a robot :)

I e-mailed HapSlash about three weeks ago. He said he was very busy at the moment and was hoping to get some free time soon to continue his JKII editing.

Okay,... I know I've been out of the loop for a while, but it looks like I'll be coming back, and what better way to reintroduce myself, than by posting a nice big image.

I haven't really done anything new yet, but I have posted all of the stuff I managed to accomplish before I left. I've put it all in an update page on my website for those who want to look at it and see all the things I was up to.

To be honest I was close to not coming back with everything else I've got going on, but somehow I knew I wasn't ready to give up yet.

Well, I'm very glad that you came back HapSlash. But ya know, if you have a lot of stuff going on in your life, remember to put the most important things first. And then, when and if you have the free time, you can do some JKII editing. (Not a command or anything, just showing concern :D ).

Oh by the way, I noticed that your Imperial Navy Trooper has rank cylinders and bars from the officer model that you based it off of. To my knowledge Imperial Navy Troopers do not wear any visible ranking of that type. But, you maybe just haven't gotten around to removing those yet. Just wanted to point that out.
