View Full Version : Nar Shaddaa single player level

It's the beginnings of a Nar Shaddaa level, obviously. This part is a pedestrian street running along side a spaceport, cut into the side of a large, vertical building (like the ones you see in JK's Nar cutscene.) The architecture, ambience and lighting is modeled after the version seen in Dark Empire and Dark Forces, not JK and JO. Keep that in mind if you're planning on saying "doesn't look like nar.." Oh, and fourwood, I love you.

It's not finished, of course.

Interesting... how much of the buildings can you actually go into? Perhaps rescale it whereas you can explore the insides more and have windows facing out. Unless you're aiming for the "close player out" dark mysterious type of Nar Map, then good for you

These buildings really aren't the focus of the level, so probably won't be able to explore much beyond the street level, at least in this part of the level. If they seem small, it's because they're mostly a facade; most of the buildings are embedded in the wall. As I said, this is a small pedestrian street, cut like the Death Star trench into a larger building.

Opposite of the wall and building facades will be a large spaceport, overhanging a chasm. A similar building with another trench will be on the other side.

Here, I made a crappy line drawing:

lol okay I see what you mean in that drawing, it looks very promising... this is completely your design isn't it? I havn't played Jk2 SP yet *gasp* so I'm not sure how to look at it by...

Also are you planning to actually put "pedestrians" in? how about some moving vehicles... Which brings into mind: is this MP or SP? Seems to be MP, but I could be wrong.

Yes, the title gives it away: "Nar Shadda single player level"

I can't see the pics:(:ball:

Keep in mind that the street level detail is nowhere near finished... nor is any other part of the level, except for the facade (maybe). :) Thanks for the praise, everyone.

The Truthful Liar
07-04-2002, 04:54 PM
Even more intruiging... Most likely you will be adding some sort of street lamps to the sides right?

I'd like to see how much actual 'interior' you're planning to develop... ;)

07-04-2002, 04:55 PM
looks freakin awesome

you got the future city looking architecture really well

the city im building looks like bloody downtown sydney

sigh... oh well

Shots of the cantina. Yes, there will be people drinking/yelling/card playing... eventually.

The Sabacc and Dejarik tables are Emon's, and a few (or at least part of a few) of the textures are Zuljin's or Mada's. Thanks to all three.

07-09-2002, 04:55 PM
looks freakin awesome man
better than raven's pub thing

are those tables brushes or md3's?

07-10-2002, 02:42 PM
yeah that looks like nar shaddaa!

i didnt really like raven's take on nar - to me it looked to clean and military

07-10-2002, 02:57 PM
The tables and chairs are MD3s already in JO, using my clip prefab, and my Dejarik and sabaac table MD3s. :)

Added graffiti to some of the alleys, and lined the street with lights, the intensity and placement of which will probably change.

07-12-2002, 03:39 PM

I'll add more tubes and junk to the walls, screw with the lighting, etc..

..I think these are some of my favorite shots, so far. I *know* it's my favorite area in the level.

07-13-2002, 06:41 PM
ok, less screen posting, more map making! :D

Grets Sirob
07-14-2002, 02:32 AM
What's wrong with screen posting?
I think that should happen more often...

07-15-2002, 01:43 PM
dude, that doesnt suck, that looks great... if its not the look you were aiming for, change it if you want, but it looks great to me

i was just worried youd be one of those who would spend more time posting screenshots than working on your project cough*jk1ep1tc*cough

yeah that stuff looks way sweet. are you planning on making civilian npcs and such? jk2 was kinda lame just enemies everywhere

07-15-2002, 02:31 PM
You bet he's gonna have NPCs! :)

Sine Nomen
07-15-2002, 06:48 PM
^ Yep.

07-16-2002, 02:48 AM
btw, how is the framerate/r_speeds/tri speeds?

07-16-2002, 03:41 AM

07-29-2002, 03:30 AM
so, hows it going?

07-29-2002, 06:58 AM
This sounds excellent and looks very promising.

One scene immediately came in to my mind: Kyle runs in the middle of dummy civilians while some Rodian bastard shoots with his Disruptor Rifle - and the poor pedestrians will disintegrate all around.

Yeah, put lots of them. Not that I would be blood thirsty, never.

07-30-2002, 02:41 AM
that is a cool idea; alot of action movies have some poor bystander take some rounds intended for the fleeing protagonist :evil2:

Part of a shoddy apartment complex, like the one Han and Leia visited in DE.

08-09-2002, 08:40 PM
:thmbup1: wow. this is one of the best maps i have seen lately. keep up the good work!:)

08-10-2002, 06:23 AM
yeah yeah keep teasin us ;)

08-10-2002, 02:55 PM
Sine Nomen, i have a little question

is the lighting in your last screenshot made with light shaders only or have you used any light entities?

good work, looks exciting

Sine Nomen
08-10-2002, 03:24 PM
The only things I use entity lights for are spotlights and md3 lamps. The rest are shaders... I'm taking a cue from RtCW. :)

Dude, this is looking great!

When and where will you be posting this map?
If it get's any better... Nah, it couldn't. Maybe a hangar though...

Your choice of course, but you will of course include injustice
StormTroopers? I like putting a big bunch in a confined space
and go saber bad on their ass.

 keep up the good work!

08-17-2002, 01:18 PM

It seems that you could make a good coruscant.

08-23-2002, 12:46 AM
NO! Not Courscant! Nar Shaddaa! please do not speak of courscant anymore as that is obviously NOT what this is.

The shots looks amazing by the way.

Sine Nomen
08-23-2002, 12:48 AM
... wait, I can understand the relation between coruscant and nar shaddaa in that they're both vast urban areas, but (please, be honest), do you think it looks more like coruscant than nar?

08-23-2002, 01:29 AM
No, I dont think so. As you said, Nar Shadda and Coruscant are both urban, thats why I said this. I definitely looks more like Nar Shadda.

08-23-2002, 01:31 AM
NO! Not Courscant! Nar Shaddaa! please do not speak of courscant anymore as that is obviously NOT what this is.

LOL, relax. I was just saying he could judging by this current work.

um, key word being could ;)

so is this map ever gonna get done? or are you just gonna keep making awesome additions to it until you run into some stupid inane compiling problem down the road and scrap the project?!?!

08-23-2002, 05:58 AM
I won't be as critical as george but still I hope you will have enough energy to make a good story behind all those outstanding graphics. Only then your map will be as memorable as it deserves to be.

08-23-2002, 03:14 PM
I agree lassev, a good story could make or break this map. Personally I dont even mess with lame SP maps. It gets pretty boring battling armies of reborn over and over again. I dont think kyles last name was meant to be Schwartzenegger...:bored:

Sine Nomen
08-23-2002, 04:33 PM
While I'm not going to give out the plot any time soon, I am pretty confident that it's a bit more intelligent than the rampage-through-imperial-base-slicing-stormies-and-reborn levels that've been floating around recently. Strangely enough, it does involve Reborn, but not necessarily fighting them. :)

very nice pics!

i've got a question though. i never played the original JK, and i don't know anything about Nar Shaada exept from the Jedi Outcast version.
So, is the whole city floating in the space? like in your screenshots? or what?

08-24-2002, 04:36 PM
Nar Shaddaa is a giant floating city in space, yes.

08-24-2002, 05:06 PM
i thought it was on a small moon, over one of the hutt planets, cuz doesnt nar shaddaa supposed to mean, smugglers moon or something?

08-24-2002, 05:32 PM
Nar Shaddaa (also called the smuggler's moon) is a moon orbiting Nal Hutta, the home planet of the Hutts.... Thus, It's not a flying city.

08-26-2002, 01:04 PM
Much of the city itself floats above the surface of the moon though. I just looked in the Dark Empire comics last night.

08-26-2002, 03:15 PM
Nar Shaddaa
this was Nal Hutta's spaceport moon, known for its vertically-built cities, experienced spaceship mechanics and its lawlessness. It is a center for smuggling operations, and is supposedly where Han Solo learned the smuggler's trade as a youth. When the Hutts took over the moon, they began using it as a spaceport, and soon huge refueling spires and repair facilities reached up from the ground into orbit. Over time, the mass of the moon was increased 300 percent as construction continued unabated. There is no observable land mass left on Nar Shaddaa, since the spaceports have grown around the spires and now completely cover the planet. The moon was uninhabited during the time that the Evocii lived on Nal Hutta, although they called it Evocar. When the Hutts took over the planet, they relegated the Evocii to Nar Shaddaa. However, the Hutts used them as semi-free slaves on the moon, and the press of so many various species and technologies eventually mutated the Evocii. Nar Shaddaa is similar to its parent planet, having a day which lasts 87 standard hours, and a year which lasts 413 local days. It is tide-locked with Nal Hutta, and only shows one side to its planet. This results in a day which has two distinct periods of ligthness: one in which is is in full view of the sun, and one in which it obtains light reflected from Nal Hutta. This also results in two periods of night.

08-26-2002, 05:28 PM

hehe a city floating in space :p

08-26-2002, 05:45 PM
OK, my mistake.
I just tought that a huge amount of gigantic constructions built around a planetoid with their base on it were still considered being on the planetoid.
So it's just a floating city with a moon "in" it...

Btw, were did you find this text, Emon ?

08-26-2002, 05:56 PM
technically, it is on a moon, i was just saying from the description that it really isnt noticable as such

08-26-2002, 07:20 PM
Hehe... I know, don't worry. It's not a big deal anyway...
I'm just stupidly defending my point a bit ;)

08-26-2002, 07:51 PM
Wow. that last pic...realy impressive. It looks like a real building and still fits in
very nicely in the Star Wars universe. This map is going to be impressive both technicaly and artisticaly.

How do you make use of area portals in this map to increase fps? /Do/ you make use of area portals?

Darth Link
09-02-2002, 08:30 PM
now that would really suck being the level as it is now(really good)but it wasnt too fps friendly.sorta like playing ns_streets on high quality with only a geforce2.uggggg that scares me just thinkin about it...:(

09-03-2002, 12:28 AM
I'm just saying that the outside seems like a fairly large open area, which can be difficult to control with area portals...

09-04-2002, 07:04 AM
being a cityscape the author would probably have lots of corners, t intersections and stuff that make use of hint brushes to minimalise the amount of level drawn at any one time by the engine

09-04-2002, 10:13 PM
Hint brushes are the single most impracticle thing in the entire Q3:TA engine. They are only useful if your level consists of a very long linear hallway that has sharp 90 degree turns in it, and has tons of detail on the wall. Even then, it won't help much. All it does is split up the leaf nodes. All it does is add a tiny bit of extra speed when looking around the corner. Not too useful.

09-05-2002, 05:11 AM
i dont really understand what ur point is
hint brushes can stop the engine drawing stuff that the player cant see yet such as around corners which is useful in areas that dont use doors such as cityscapes

a tiny bit of extra speed? it can make the difference of a level being playable or not

Sine Nomen
09-06-2002, 01:42 AM

Terraced landing platforms. Yeah, you can go in (most of) the buildings.

BTW, don't worry about the FPS. They're ~50-60 throughout, on a 1.2ghz Athlon, GF2MX, and 384 DDR. I can't cater to people with really low-end machines if I want to maintain the level of detail I've got going now, but I'm doing everything I can to make it run as smoothly as possible. It's not a problem at this point. If you want something to compare it to, I think the performance is more or less the same as in ns_streets.

09-06-2002, 04:43 AM
thats looks bleedin' amazing

is there an ETA on this baby?
