This is a must do:

Download the Compaq Creative Drivers - they give you OpenAL "HARDWARE" support.

1. Get the drivers here -

http://fernando.darocha.free.fr/liveware.htm

Click on the first download link:

"Liveware pour windows xp ver 5.12.1.244 Rev. B pack complet multilangue 377Mo " Red Win XP Button.

Warning:

It's a 386mb file, but only takes less than hour for most cable and dsl connections.

2.

"-uninstall ALL creative components fully, everything. including stray old INFs in your windows dir -reboot
-choose cancel when it detects your card on reboot
-delete ctoem.cfg
-install using the provided exes NOT using manual INF install"

http://www.3dsoundsurge.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=Forum22&Number=78888&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=

3.

a: Allow the drivers to install in the directory they want to go in.

b. The first time you install the drivers - they want to save their files to a directory first.

c. The installation will say it could not find your hardware.

d. Go to the directory c:\compaq\SP20920\Audio\Setup\

e. Delete the file "ctoem.cfg"

f. Run the file setup.exe

g. Follow all the installation steps, including rebooting.

4.

Go ahead and run JK2 or SOF 2 or any game that supports OpenAL.

EAX will now be hardware supported - meaning much higher FPS.

Be sure to turn on EAX in your game.

5.

When using JK 2, if for any reason EAX doesn't stay on when you switch servers, look for all instance of the file "Jk2mpconfig.cfg (including duplicates in mod directories) and find the variable:

seta s_UseOpenAL "0"

Make sure it is:

seta s_UseOpenAL "1"

The same may have to be done for other Q3 engine game's mpconfig like config files.

Anyone trying it?

Click on the link for #2 - it's on 3Dsoundsurges forums.

It really works, and very well.

Someone asked me on another forum - what's the difference in the drivers?

My response:

Compaq and Gateway have new drivers from Creative - not sure why that is.

They support hardware OpenAL.

Creative is working on making these public but have been very slow about it, no one knows why.

The difference?

About 10-20+ FPS difference when using EAX HD in SOF 2, JK 2, or any other game that supports Open AL.

And the difference isn't just FPS, it's overall smoothness, there is no jerking of FPS (up and down) when playing or hearing more sounds, it's rock solid.

Summary:

Before the drivers (using cd Audigy drivers with XP patch):

EAX HD = 10-20 FPS, real bad.

After the Compaq-Creative drivers (with hardware OpenAL support):

EAX HD = maybe.. if at all, 1-2 FPS hit. Seriously.

It's a winner.

I installed the Compaq drivers and I still lose about 20fps with EAX on. I've deleted the Openal.dll in the JKII dir and the one in the windows system dir is the compaq driver. This really sucks because it is still jerky.

Athlon XP 1500+
Geforce 4 4200 128mb
Abit kr7a w/512 ddr
Sb audigy
