Com Raven

turn-based:
I move one guy, then the enemy, then me, then the enemy...
real-time:
all happens at the same time, I and PC act together...

I heard you can pause it, though.

yes you can, as it was in BG and NWN...

What's so special about this pausing thing? Can't you do it in most games during a fight?
Com Raven

well, the first game to have used it was Bioware's Baldur's Gate...
since then, most isometric rpgs use it...

Turn-based combat is just like the fighting system for final fantasy, you just take turns at throwing your attacks or magic.

not really....
FF X has turn-based combat, while previous FF games had a time-based system...

Turn based combat explained-
When in battle (for example) the turn based system allows the player to perform 1 sequence or action. e.g. swaping players (FFx). The player then must wait while the computer retaliates to the players move. For example:
Player- cast freeze spell
*spell*
WAIT PERIOD - Computer fires back/heals/dodges spell
Player- retreats
*runs away*
WAIT PERIOD - Player recieves X amount of damage for leaving a battle.
I hope this is correct, and is the easiest example i can think of.

Pausing will be fun and will make for some nifty screenshots.
Now add dismemberment!!!

Bio never had that in their games, but in BG series, a critical, lethal blow left the enemy in a bloody mess....

You should go over to Yoda's swamp there are some great people over there, and almost all of them play JKII.

There are a couple of D3 videos and the previews are everywhere. It also looks like a Doom game that I might actually enjoy for once.

This is what I don't understand. In real-time you, the character is fighting by himself, not by your controls. Please explain better.

welcome ill :)
in real-time you give the character and order, just like in WC 3 or AoM, and he carries it out immediately...
in turn-based, it's like an old board game, where you act, then enemy, then you....
