Um... all you really need is a paint program. Photoshop... MS-Paint (standard on most windows computers)... anything will do.
Then download pakscape from www.fileplanet.com

That's really all there is to it. Modeling requires special programs, but skinning... another (and trust me easier) story.

whats a 'real' skin?

a skin is the textures put on the model and a model is the 3d erm...model...that th eksin goes on.

you cant make a yoda skin, or at least not a good one that actually looks like yoda. someone, however, is making a yoda model. it will be done some day, patience, padawan learner.

I think I know what he means... He's just slightly confused...

Think of a model as a statue. The skin is the paint that goes on that statue. While it is great to make new models, it is INCREDIBLY difficult. On the other hand, I recommend new editors start out making skins. I love making them. If you want to learn how to make a model, go to the modeler's forum and check out the tutorials.

you COULD skin in paint, but the results wouldnt be very pleasing to the eye. i recommend photoshop.

I actually have seen some decent skins that supposedly came from paint, but I have my doubts. You'd have to pick each and every pixel. I'd see if you can find a cheap older version of photoshop. I'm using 4.0, myself.
