Zone = evil

3rd Party app. = evil

In game server finder = good

That is my advice of the day. :)

And to answer your question: No.

in game server finder=useless. :)

I just use the ingame server finder. I don't like installing a bunch of third-party stuff. Clutters the hard drive. :)

I can proudly say that I have NOT re-activated my Zone account(s) since JK2 was released, and as a result, have NOT played JK2 on the Zone EVER.

I say this, because I never liked the Zone, and only used it due to a lack of games elsewhere (even GSA, when we had problems with the LFN IP boards). Now I just use the built in browser, and Qtracker for "out of game" browsing. ; )

Why won't I use the Zone now, even though it's free? One factor is the pointless (and security-risk-prone) ".NET" passport crap. Also the in-game browser is a lot faster and doesn't require me to install any extra software (that requires frequent updating, such as the MSN Zone software).

Agen

Agreed. Q-Tracker also deserves a mention as it's pretty damn good too but the zone is now officially worthless with it's .net trash

I use GameSpy 3D exclusively. I haven't used an in-game browser since Quake 2.

Like Kurgan, I also avoid the Zone like the plague, due to the .net crap. I personally use QTracker, mainly to find out if the person I'm playing against has set up the server yet. No point in waiting for JO to load, not seeing the server, getting out, and ICQing the person to ask where it is. QTracker loads a lot faster than the game, and I can moniter to see whether the game is up THERE

People like me have to go on the Zone because there are some of us that can't play Jedi Outcast and have to be stuck with Jedi Knight and the SBX 3.1 mod. And thats the only place that you can play JK online nowadays.

I tried it once, and I really didn't like it. It didn't seem to fit what I liked. I use gamespy a lot now though.

I'm just curious, of those of you who used to play jk1 on the zone and will never go back, do any of you have another reason for not going back (i.e. a guy by the name of Darchind)?

HEY YOU THERE! *I* was going to post that pic! :D

Seriously, try out the All-Seeing Eye. It's waaaayyy better than the in-game thingy and beats gamespy easily.

Never tried the Zone, but that pic speaks for itself. LoL!

I got INCREDIBLY sick of the rampant immaturity & cheating that went around there. Cog hacks a-plenty back in the jk1 days. :(

one question...

Why ppl use third party programs to find server... THe game has one.. and is very usefull!!! Why would they even think of using a program to find a server?

I actually posted my reason, but I will elaborate. I'm one of those weirdos who actually prefers playing people he KNOWS, instead of playing on a random server. For finding games with my friends, loading QTracker, a small and quick-loading program, makes more sense than loading JO, which takes a bit of time. Also, with QTracker, I can search for more than one friend at once, unlike the JO search function. With QTracker, I can find the servers easily, and go straight into them when I load the game.

O.K. here we go:

I LIKE THE ZONE.

there i said it.

ya thats right, i like the zone, why? because its hard to have clans and such with the in-game browser. you can't cheat, or i haven't seen anybody, with pure server and there doesn't seem to be much scum around. i didn't mind the zone for jk1 either though. i like chatting to people and joining training rooms or the rare rpg. i don't see what people don't like about the zone...

The zone sux hardcore. I used to play on it in my old school q2 and jk1 days. lags like a mofo and nothing but noobs all over. jk2 i've tried on it and i spent the nwxt 2 days crying because it was so lame. :saberg:

THE ZONE IS A VERY BAD THING! I hate the zone. It sucks hardcore. Gamespy is okay. I use it wolfenstein and quake 3 alot, but have never used it with JK2 the in game browers works fine for me.

I use Gamespy 3D instead of in-game browsers because:

1. I can set a list of "buddies."

2. I can set lists of favorite servers as well as see every server out there

3. It does just about every multi-player game, so I need to fire up only 1 application to see who's playing JKII, Q3, Tribes, etc. (and highlights servers with those in my buddy list). When I want to join a server, I just double-click it and it will launch the appropriate game and my custom configs.

4. There are IRC scripts that integrate the game launchers with IRC so it will announce that I joined a server, give the time and the address so that other's in my IRC rooms may choose to follow.

Do NOT confuse this with Gamespy Arcade; I can't stand the one at all.

i use gamespy because i play rogue spear as well, and all of my old rs friends are on gs, and i dare not go to zone for rs, they actually have ppl pay for a patch that is supposed to stop cheating and doesnt, yet the people buy it and get cheated against anyway, so i stay away from zone as if it were not only a plague, but hell itself. :evil6:

Only if you're stupid and can't find a game without every little detail spelled out in perfect english in front of your face.

The ingame browser is the fastest, the All Seeing Eye is really fast and has some great sorting options. I use both. GameSpy and the Zone are utter crap, avoid them like the plague.

Because something is Microsoft or has .net requirements doesn't mean it must suck.

Zone.com was one of the first serious and stable 3rd party online gaming clients and it still is the best for this even because of other reasons it doesn't support many games. Yes for JK2 the zone is not the best thing because most servers are dedicated but for the other games it rocks. If has an awesome game finder is ultra fast, uses minor resources, is ultra stable and uses a perfect Friends program. I can't really understand people using Gamecpy (both arcade and 3d). For the arcade users it is just stupid. With every click you do you have 400 banners in your face and you also have to wait for some time till they disappear. Non-broadhand connections have a great problem with Arcade because your bandwidth is downloading more banners than server info with results of awful unreal pings and more. From the other side Zone is very stable and doesn't have annoying banners. Yes the .net thing was a bad thing but still, it is the best service for me.

LoL i agree.. I assume most of you guys must be using a version of windows... (XP 2000, me, or even 98!).. unless yall are using linux, or mac os (EWWWW)

No the .net stuff makes it ultra-complicated to get an alias, or to sign up at all.. I only resigned up to play JK1, otherwise there's no way I would've put up with that crap.

i go with qtracker.. its a very usefull program.. and unlike the ASE its free to use the clan tag search function.

in ASE you have to register as in PAY to enable that function.

Nope, I tend to stay away from Zone simply because there are so many lamers there. I usually join games either from GameSpy Arcade, or from multiplayer within the game. ;)
