View Full Version : Lightsaber Hilts in Progress

I figure instead of dropping in other peoples threads, I would make my own. In fact, anyone working on a lightsaber hilt can post WIP pics here if they feel so inclined.

Either way, here is what I have been working on:

Aayla Secura's Lightsaber:
http://www.havenofrags.com/quamosity/jk2/saber_aayla.jpg

Micah Giett's Lightsaber
http://www.havenofrags.com/quamosity/jk2/saber_micah.jpg

Quinlan Vos's Lightsaber:
http://www.havenofrags.com/quamosity/jk2/saber_quinlan.jpg

I have tried to keep them as low poly as I can and fleshed out the details in the skins. The skins are not the best, but of course they are open for repair.

I have had these for a while (although I just finished Quinlan's today) and felt the urge to show them off. I just cannot decide which lightsaber to do next.

Oh, and of course I must allow myself a chance to show the designs I based these off of--my Jedi Sabers picture:

http://www.havenofrags.com/quamosity/JediSabers.jpg

Hope you like :)

thank you, I've been looking for that picture for 2 weeks now :P

I'm gonna get to work on some of the ones I've been meaning to work on :P

Wow, they are low poly. My personal saber came to just over 500, and I thought mine was over simplified. The sabers look good though.

07-08-2002, 05:41 AM
Glad to know the saber picture is still helpful.

I cut corners everywhere I could to keep the sabers low poly. I am rather proud of that.

I am trying to think of the next one to work on and will post pictures as it is completed.

don't be afraid to up the polys... cause some parts look a little too simple.

They need more metalic colouring on them.

quamosity
07-08-2002, 10:08 AM
I will try to release them as soon as I figure out the Milkshape Tutorial for getting models in game. Also, like mentioned above, I need to finalize the skins.

of course, if anyone wants to make the skins better, let me know...

They look really good, but they would look a lot more detailed if you added more sides, uped the poly count. These look like something you would use in Dark Forces II (no offence of course).

Keep up the good work :).

quamosity

No release date set yet...I tried again to get them in game, but still had my tags wrong, as well as the textures.

So I made two more sabers:

Yarael Poof's Lightsaber

http://www.havenofrags.com/quamosity/jk2/saber_yarael.jpg

and

Saesse Tiin's Lightsaber

http://www.havenofrags.com/quamosity/jk2/saber_saesse.jpg

Both are members of the Jedi Council. Poof is the long necked one, in case you don't know.

I dont know if this question has been answered or not but hey, ill ask anyway. Are there plans to create an individual saber model mod for JK2? Maybe have in the player setup menu a new field where you can select from a range of downloaded sabers and have each player in multiplayer/single player show as having his/her individual saber in game?

quamosity
07-12-2002, 02:52 AM
I sure hope so. I would really like to customize my whole character to include changing the saber :)

I think someone is working on something like that, we will just have to wait and see.

I had a little time last night so I cooked up another raw saber. Of course, like the others, they are not in game. I am having really difficulty with the tags. Just when I think I got it figured out...nope..shutdown.

Ki-Adi-Mundi's Lightsaber Hilt:
http://www.havenofrags.com/quamosity/jk2/saber_mundi.jpg

I am not really satisfied with the skin, but it will do for now.

If anyone wants me to send them any of these models, I can email a .3ds version of them to you. Email me at quamosity@havenofrags.com and we can work something out.

Thanks

Well, I got my tags working correctly, but now my textures are not showing up right. They seem a tad washed out and darker than they should be...I am looking into that, however, but at least I have the saber hilts in game

your comments are kinda bad...maybe you could try and elaborate on why you feel my sabers 'look kinda bad'

Horrorz2002
07-15-2002, 05:32 AM
I personally know absolutely nothing about modelling / skinning, but I know the saber poly limit is about 1000.

My opinion (if you want to hear it) is that you should use up as many of the 1000 polys as you can to make your sabers look even better. Personally I believe that your Ki-Adi-Mundi hilt looks GREAT and it's about twice the polies as the other ones...see where I'm getting at? :) :). Your work at saving polys was quite successful for producing decent-looking sabers though!! Good job!
All in all, if you prefer the sabers low-poly, then that's cool too :) just keep up the good work!

Just my 2 cents.

-Chrono_MOT-
07-15-2002, 05:32 AM
You could stand to use a few hundred more polys. Some of those are way to simple. The skins are great, yes. But they look more like skinned version of the sabers and less like models of them.

Don't get me wrong, wonderful job, just use more polys :P

quamosity
07-15-2002, 06:31 AM
Well, sure, I could go for using a few more polies on some of the models, but I do not feel it necessary. Some of the details I could add to the sabers would be covered by the hands from the player models, anyway.

Also, with the new models popping up and pushing the polycount to the limits, as well as the new npc models showing up, there will eventually (hopefully) be a mod that would allow specific saber models for different characters (at least in Multiplayer). Having the detailed character models on screen, each with a variety of sabers would be a lot of poly-pushing power on everyone's computers. Sure, some people have monster computers, but not everyone. And by limiting my saber hilts to monster amounts of polies, I can allow everyone to play. You don't see THAT much of the saber in game as it is, so there is no reason to go completely crazy with the model.

At least, that is what I believe.

As for the argument about my Ki-Adi-Mundi saber looking good while the others do not, the reason the Mundi saber has more polies is because the saber hilt itself requires it. Aayla's, Micah's and Tiin's sabers did not require a ton of polies, as they are pretty much only tubes within tubes. There is no way I am going to waste polies creating a grip, either.

But, think what you will. I appreciate the comments and hope I can finally finish one day :)

-Chrono_MOT-
07-15-2002, 06:38 AM
you don't need to poly the grips, but things like the grooves in Ki-Adi-Mundi's saber (i have a reference pic, because I was working on the model) should be done with cylinders and not flat-textured skins. Otherwise you might as well skin a stick and call it a lightsaber. That's the point. People want accurate models of lightsabers, not just good skins ^_^.

I like your models, and they are nice, but you should spend a couple hundred polys on some minute details. You have about 800 to work with anyway.

quamosity
07-15-2002, 10:13 AM
I made another one, coming in at 600 polies less than a 1000. Amazing!

I have a request fulfillment and a custom saber

and

Yun's Lightsaber Hilt:

Both sabers are in game and function correctly. Will have them out as soon as I make up another lightsaber pack--which should only be a couple of days tops, or if there is a great enough demand to release it now.

Thanks,

Remark- I am already in the process of making one of Mara Jade's sabers. Its not the one you pictured but here is the model pic

Right now im having some problems but you can read about them on my Thread called "UVWrapping" in this models forum.

Daskers is right; I have noticed that on the Rahn saber, the blade doesn’t seem to be connected to the emitter. I don’t know how easy this is to fix, but other than that, it is an absolutely superb saber.

Mara Jade’s Mysteries of the Sith Lightsaber

Reference Pictures:
http://www.reandev.com/MOTS.gif
This, in my opinion, is the most accurate picture of Mara’s MOTS lightsaber.

http://www.reandev.com/MJSdrawing.jpg
This is a rough sketch I made, due to the lack of reference pictures.

http://www.thelightsaber.com/WorkFolder/SmallSFW/MaraMOTSSM.jpg
This is the current lightsaber pictured at www.thelightsaber.com, while the model is pretty accurate, in my opinion, the coloring is incorrect. Mara’s new saber should have a dull, non-reflective grey finish applied over the metal of the saber, with a grey padded grip, rather than the shiny metallic chrome effect pictured in the www.thelightsaber.com image.

I have a request for you. Its called the staft saber and its really neat its like fighting with a whole nother weapon. All you'd have to do with jedimod is shorting the blade to about 0.35. I think you helped me before but i'm not sure heres a link to the saber.
http://www.jedicenter.com/downloads/sabers.phtml?id=141746&language=en or http://www.jk2files.com/file.info?ID=3698
The thing is I've gotten it to work in jedimod but the texture isn't showing and I believe I might not have totally made it compatible cause the lightsaberblade is a little off now.

quamosity

I have seen several variations on Darth Bane's Lightsaber. Originally, I was looking for pictures to place on my Jedisabers picture: http://web.umr.edu/~mlang/jk2/JediSabers.jpg

However, that picture had turned into my saber models.

One of the reference pictures I found for Darth Bane's saber was the image you posted above, taken from the cover of the Jedi Vs Sith comic. This was the other image:
http://web.umr.edu/~mlang/jk2/Pictures/gamer-3-bane.jpg

Personally, I like the image above better than the others and that I why I made the saber like that. Yes, I took some creative license with it, but not that much. I like how it turned out. Maybe later will I create the other version, but I make no promises.

As for the staft saber, we shall see. Im still in my resting phase, but I might work on it at some point.

Well, I looked at the saber and considered converting it, but the texture didnt really lend itself well to being remapped. Instead, I created a whole new saber with a similar design. It is something more...familiar:

Saber_pike:
http://web.umr.edu/~mlang/jk2/Sabers/saber_pike.jpg

Using my Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology, I made a model of the Royal Guard's Force Pike. Instead of the spear point, however, I created a Lightsaber emitter. Same staff saber idea, just fashioned with a little more finesse.

Hope this works :)

is there anyway to make the whole pike a jedimod compatable saber without the energy blade? if there is, i'd like to request the type of staff kir kanos wields, the double-bladed one... if that's not too much to ask.

I'm sure there is a way to do that, except I just dont know how atm. I will look into the katana, to see how it was done there.

Also, this force pike isnt the same design of the one Kir Kanos uses. This is the one with just the spear point, not the knife/blade.

you probably noticed but why is it that the game cant make long lightsabers work probperly?

i tried using the darkstardb and the second blade comes out at the middle of saber at the connection point between the saber

the maul saber does something similar but doesnt look as bad and they are the same length and the long sabers also do this

WHY???? is it the game has hardcoded the legal length of the handel?

I just finished modeling a saberhilt. I used Gmax. Once you Unwrap the mesh....the tutorial I'm using says to Unweld the verticies. I select the verticies....but I can't find the Unweld command. It says its the bottom on the top ....8 buttons from the left....but its not. There is a command to break the verticies...which i guess is the right button. I break the verticies...but I can't lay them out properly to be skinned. How can I take the saber apart into pieces and unfold them to be skinned????

Also...you ever try modeling something besides lightsabers?...Guns perhaps? Are you gonna model any characters?

Hey quamosity could you possibly make the lightsabers that Master Shawn Kenobi makes mod compatible? He makes some great sabers. This is the Ben Kenobi ANH sabre: http://mr8472.netfirms.com/obi-wananh_sabre.zip. It's a great model and would be swell if we could get it in with mod. He's working on a Trebor Coleman saber also.

quamosity,

I know there are other tutorials out there, but could you please make a write-up on UVMapping and making skins? Your work is efficient, fast, and excellent quality. Your sabers are awesome. :)

I can make the models in MAX4, but I stumble when it comes to the skinning tutorial found here:

http://www.btinternet.com/~howe_alison/brothers/tutorial/gmax_jkii_tutorial.htm

I need more in-depth instructions.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Concerning the dual-blade issue:

Yes, the game has the second blade hard coded into it. I would gather it mirrors the second blade a certain distance away from the first. I already had shortened the sabers, and I suppose I could shorten them some more to make it work better. I will look into that.

Concerning the problems with GMAX:

I do not use GMAX to make my lightsabers. I apologize, but I do not know how to help you in that regard. I use Milkshape 3d (best 20 bucks I ever spent) and it has helped me alot. But as for GMAX, I know there are some tutorials floating around that can be helpful. (The jk2models.cjb.net website is down, it seems, and that guy had a lot of helpful information. Hopefully he will return). You might want to try polycount.com to see if there is any information there.

As for my future modelling plans, I do not plan on going into any player modelling. Lightsabers are easy for me. They tend to be symmetrical and thats easy to work with. Organic objects are more difficult. I have no current plans for player models, however. I do create player skins. My two twi'lek skins can be seen here: http://web.umr.edu/~mlang/jk2/Skins/ Those I am not bad at. Creating the Force Pike would be a step into a general weapon area, and we shall see where that leads. I can say I plan on creating other weapon/lightsaber hybrids--including a Gaffi Stick-style lightsaber--but other than that we shall see what happens.

Concerning Shawn Kenobi's Saber hilts:

I would have to remap the saber in order to convert it, and that is something that I would not like to do. Can shawn convert them himself? Have you asked? If thats a problem, and he is willing to send me either the .md3 of the saber or a .3ds of the model, I would be more than happy to get it converted to the jedimodcompatible format. But I leave the asking to you. If you do get the files from him, contact me at quamosity@havenofrags.com and we can get it straightened out.

Concerning tutorials:

The only tutorials I am working from would be the original milkshape tutorial that I turned into a .pdf file and uploaded here:
http://web.umr.edu/~mlang/jk2/tutorials/Milkshape%20Saber%20Tutorial.PDF
That will most likely be the extent of my tutorial issues. That is what I worked from, and it proved to be very helpful to me. As to how I create the saber, in milkshape I use a 1-stacked, 6-sliced cylinder. Create it the length you desire and then each subsequent cylinder you need I created a duplicate of the first, and then scaled it appropriately, maintaining the same origin for all parts of the saber. The only thing of concern in that milkshape tutorial is the texture settings. In the .qc file, it is important to have the full dir structure of the skin texture listed. Here is what the .qc file of my saber_q_pike saber looks like:

// meshes (surfaces)
$mesh "saber_w"
$skin "models/weapons2/saber_q_pike/newsaber.jpg"
$flags 0

just change saber_q_pike to saber_yoursaber/yoursabertexture.jpg and you will be set.

It is late and I have an early morning tomorrow, but hopefully this has helped in some way.

I will try to work on that Mara Jade MOTS lightsaber, as well as the dual-bladed force pike of Kir Kanos, and Ottar Doneeta's Hilt. But I do not know how soon they will be up.

Just to clarify, sabers on my 'things to do' list include:

-A Gaffi stick/lightsaber Hybrid (in similar vein to the force pike)
-Mara Jade's MOTS lightsaber
-Ottar Doneeta's Hilt
-Kir Kanos' Dual Bladed Force Pike

I was looking at my Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology and noticed that I might be able to fashion a hybrid Lightsaber out of a Stokhli spray stick. Might be interesting. There are other sabers I wish to work on as well, and perhaps they will show up before the others.

Until next time,

Just one question Quamosity, how did you uvUnwrap the model into a mesh to be able to skin it? I was making a Mace Windu EpII hilt for Jedi Outcast and I modeled it in Milkshape 3D and exported it and everything, it works fine ingame but there is no skin. I've had two skinners say they could mesh it but havn't been able to. How do you unWrap or UVmap these models so easily?

Your input is greatly appreciated :)

quamosity
08-09-2002, 02:05 AM
My models start out as primitives (i.e. several cylinders, boxes, spheres, etc) and I skin mesh them as such. I find it easier to skinmesh just a small part at a time as opposed to the whole thing at once.

As for doing the actual skinmeshing, all I do is go to the second tab window on the model tool bar, select the group, then go to the materials tab (third tab) and make sure it is assigned to the single texture by hitting the ASSIGN button. The group has to be selected in order to be assigned correctly.

Hope that helps a bit

(sorry for no updates on sabers, I have been busy all day :-p )

Quamosity I have an idea for a new type of lightsaber weapon. How about a shorting version of something the grim reaper would use. It would have a long handle and at the top it would do a 90 degree agle and the lightsaber beam could be attached to the end of a 90 degree angle. I think this weapon would work perfect with the two new saber styles. What do you think?

I started working on Mara Jade's MOTS saber and all I have left to complete is the meshing and skinning part. I have a free day friday, so I will try and take care of some of that then.

I am able to convert the Exar Kun saber, but will only do so under the permission of the author. I have to say, though, that it is a beautiful model. Other lightsaber conversions will be looked at before I consider converting them. Some of these other hilts are just too polywasteful for my tastes and as such I do not want to work with them.

And to Bogus: I have no plans to make non-saber weapon models for JK2. I have not made any weapon models for AHL. I think you might have me confused for someone else. I was mostly a player model skinner.

Hopefully I will find some free time. I still want to make that gaffi stick.

quamosity
08-23-2002, 01:27 PM
I use the default texture meshing stuff that comes with Milkshape. Everything I do is done in Milkshape, except skinning, of course.

If you are having problems with it, Keep your pieces small. Its very difficult to mesh one giant saber, but if you break it down into smaller parts (like just the emitter, and even smaller cylinder parts) it is much more easier to work with.

Morthvargr
08-23-2002, 08:59 PM
Those hilts are excellent! The pike was especially impressive, and it was great to see Exar's hilt finally made compatible. Do you know if remark666 wants to include them in his next official hilt pack?

Also, I originally posted this in the request thread, but I was afraid it was getting overlooked, and you seem like the ultimate hilt man, so I thought you might be interested in doing it:

I've got a request for a hilt model. I think someone should do a darksword. It's supposed to be an ancient sith weapon that predates lightsabers. It consists of a sword whose blade can be plasmatically charged. I'm no modeller, but someone could make a hilt with an actual blade as part of the model. When the lightsaber is activated, it would look as if the blade were being 'charged.' I think this would look pretty cool, and it would probably be a nice change of pace from other hilts.

As for references, a darksword was wielded by Mighella, a Nightsister and bodyguard of Master Lex in Darth Maul 3 and 4. Here are a couple of pics culled from thelightsaber.com:

The sword saber is a good idea because you wouldn't have to replace the blade with a lightsaber. You could model it just like that and place the tag as normal at the top of the hilt. In the comic that weapon had like a saberblade surround the metal blade in the comic. Definately a cool idea.:D

i noticed the ki adi mundi saber hilt has the beam come out slightly to the side of the hilt. i dont know if that is because of the hilt, or something else in the game.

Ok, Ki-Adi-Mundi's Saber should be fixed now. I was testing around with it a while back and apparently didn't change it back. I also made that saber a little wider as I didn't feel it had the correct shape it should have.

Download link is the same as above :)

Hey quamosity, did you ever create a hilt that resembled Yuuzhan Vong weaponry?

quamosity
09-05-2002, 04:34 PM
Keo, no I haven't. I have yet to actually get into any of the New Jedi Order books, but I will not allow that to prevent me from making a saber similar to that style. There are pictures of several Vong in the New Essential Guide to Characters, and I could base one off of that. However, if you have any other images of what you had in mind, I would love to see them.

That is definitely a great request. And I should have a good deal of time this weekend to take care of a saber or two.

Yes this would be a great idea. Unfortunately I myself was going to create this at one time but never had anygood pictures just discriptions in all the books I've read. Hope you create this it would be awesome.

here is my best description of an amphistaff: a long black scaled snake, with a pointed, sharpened tail at one end, with the snaked head being roughly the size of two fists(I suggest the mouth be open for the saber to come out of) the eyes are red and the underside of the amphistaff is grey. the amphistaff is able to be a whip, which when is not used, wraps around the arm of the person posessing it, it is also able to bite, with a fatal venom and is able to spit an acidic substance at targets from many meters away. that's the best description I was able to gather from all the NJO books I've read :D

by the way, have you thought about my suggestion of doing the double bladed lightsaber? I think it would be nice to have more than just the exar kun and the maul saber for dual bladed fighting... http://members.tripod.com/MousieDroid/Hilt/Jarvis_Zarhn_2.html

but that's up to you

Yeah I thought about it. And then I stopped thinking about it. That saber looks quite a lot like Darth Maul's saber. In fact, its nearly identical, give or take a few details. If you have used my saber pack, you would notice that I have 4 different dual-bladed lightsabers for usage - Phoenix Darkstar, Jediq, q_sleek, and then that Kun saber. So you DO have options.

As for the ampstaff, I have completed the twisted handle for the hilt, and I want to do something with a snakes open mouth for the blade emitter, however I am having difficulty planning that out. Progress should continue once I find some time.

Thanks

did you ever figure out if invisible blades were possible with selectable hilts?

is there anyway to make the whole pike a jedimod compatable saber without the energy blade? if there is, i'd like to request the type of staff kir kanos wields, the double-bladed one... if that's not too much to ask.

quamosity

oh...right...that. Well, I figured that since there are the katana replacements and the axes, that doing a dual bladed force pike would not be too much of a problem. However, I do not fully understand how it should be done. It might be as simple as not including tags with the hilt, or it might be something else.

If anyone has an idea on how to get that to work, I will implement it first on my force pike saber (with tip) and then work on Kir Kano's pike.

If not then somebody should make a mod that adds an invisible blade. Maybe in the next version of JediMod or ForceMod.

I've said this before.

My friend mark says the dude who made jedimod is busy at college so he won't be able to update for a while :/

Morthvargr

The katanas and axes I've seen were made by making all colors of the saber blades invisible, so you couldn't really use those *and* normal hilts.

keo718
09-12-2002, 12:05 AM
The problem with the invisible blade is that there are alot of cheap people on Multiplayer who would take advantage of it, using it for regular hilts.

quamosity
09-12-2002, 12:28 AM
keo, in response to that, i could lower the tag_flash on any extended weapon I model, so if someone was to abuse the blade length, the only 'exploit' they would get out of it would be the fact that they would see the blade, in turn ruining the experience.

keo718
09-12-2002, 12:31 AM
So in other words, do you mean that if they pick a normal sized hilt that the blade would be visible?

quamosity
09-12-2002, 02:10 AM
I think I may have misunderstood your point to begin with. How exactly do you see people exploiting the invisible blades? To me, it would seem that if you cannot see your own blade, you aren't getting any cheat out of that...you are in just as deep as your opponent would be...

But please explain it further

keo718
09-12-2002, 09:43 AM
The invisible blade would be primarily for the purpose of using with things like the force pike and gaffi stick. This way, you could make both of these models without having to worry about making them hilts. The invisible blade shouldnt be able to be selected with regular hilts. You wouldn't be able to see how an opponent is attacking you.

Daskers
09-12-2002, 02:42 PM
Maybe you should have hilts that are internally programmed to have an invisible blade. That way only the modellers could exploit it.

Maybe an option to assign a different sound set to them would be good as well. Get rid of the saber sound.

This would take a good bit of coding, and I'm not sure of who would be up to the task.

Padawan_7

One thing I'm doing, that may be of some interest, is taking the gaffi stick made by Major Clod and am currently making in sort of mod compatible.

I noticed that if, in jedimod, you set R = 0, B = 0, and G = 0, it makes the outside area of the lightsaber blade (the colored area and not the core) invisible. That way the only thing you have to put up with is the white core blur when you swing it.

Of course, there is still no way to have both the lightsaber and the gaffi stick sound effects operational at the same time. But it's good enough for me until someone comes out with something better.

Morthvargr
09-12-2002, 05:11 PM
I would just as soon make the blade come out of the end of the stick like the pike, and leave it at that.

Padawan_7
09-12-2002, 05:12 PM
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. When you use the above settings along with a normal saber hilt, it kind of looks like a thin force pike that the Emperor's Royal Guards use.

keo718
09-12-2002, 06:20 PM
Yeah I noticed that as well, with the force pike. The only problem is you cannot set the tck values to all 0's with bots.

Padawan_7
09-12-2002, 06:50 PM
Oooops... I gave the wrong numbers. I meant R = 1, B = 1, G = 1, and yes they will work with the bots.

it isnt much as I haven't had much time, but heres a shot:

Working on the twisting snakes. I have a design worked up for it...it may not be exactly what the book covers show, but it should be cool nonetheless.

Oh, and that little platform at the top is not going to be in there much longer, that was just a test.

quamosity, if I were going to use one of your saber hilts in SP, exactly how would I set it up so that the hilt texture would be visable in 1st person?

In the /models/weapons2 folder, I create a "saber" folder and dump the contents of the ... say ... saber_q_rahn hilt into it. And then pack it.

When I load it up, the hilt is visable, but it is without texture.

Do I need to edit the model_fpls2.skin file in the KYLE folder?

..

Also, is there a way to change the kyle saber color in SP without having to manually type in "sabercolor whatever"? I've played around with the npcs file and easily change the npc saber colors, but have not been successful with the 1st person saber.

Thanks.
