how do you work the mirror floor

I've tried misc_portal_surface and both mirror_floor1 and 2 with 2 I get the smokey opaque glass effect which of course is what i'm not going for, and with 1 i get the missing texture effect(gray boxes with white lines) What am I doing wrong.
