BioWare Signs On With Microsoft
06-AUG-02
Microsoft announced today that it has signed a deal with the PC RPG masters at BioWare that will make one of their next games Xbox-only. The deal will give Microsoft an exclusive, BioWare-developed Xbox title, which they'll then publish under their own label. No game particulars were mentioned in the announcement, and the release date is still unknown.
"I'm very excited about this new alliance between Microsoft and BioWare," said Ed Fries, vice president over at Microsoft Game Studios. "These guys are some of the most creative developers in the world. We're looking forward to working with them to bring the creativity and great gameplay they're known for to Xbox."
BioWare, if you're not up on the PC scene too much, is responsible for some of the biggest titles in computer RPG fandom these days, including Neverwinter Nights and the Baldur's Gate series. They're already working on another Xbox-only RPG, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for LucasArts, which will come out later this year.
In a separate announcement, BioWare co-head Greg Zeschuk mentioned that the studio is also working on a new, top secret PC RPG project that hasn't been presented to any publisher yet. "Our PC developers are already hard at work on our other new 'secret' PC roleplaying game," he Zeschuk commented. "Creating our own universe is a great opportunity for us to deliver a game that is uniquely BioWare, and we look forward to creating an immersive BioWare RPG experience in the tradition of [our] games."
