View Full Version : Shoulda beefed up the duel in ep4

I dont know why they didnt improve the saber duel in ep4 in the special edition. They had the technology and they coulda shot new moves and stuff in with stunt guys and pasted Alecs face on one of em like they did in ep1 with Ewan and Liams faces on the stunt guys for certain stunts. I tell ya the saber fight in ep4 is soooooo lame. I got nothing but respect for George but come on! Vader: poke poke swish, Obi: swish poke poke, Vader: big swish end of fight. Cripes! Ep 5 and 6 coulda used better saber fighting too. Just cause it was all 19+ years ago doesnt mean they couldnt have spectacular fights. Hell Bruce Lee and Jacky Chan were doing that stuff before Star Wars. Right? And great flashy sword fighting has been around for hundreds of years, even thousands perhaps.

Obi-Wan was in his seventies......
(how good is your grandad with a saber?)
and Vader was no spring chicken either, plus his Mechanical limbs were getting old and probably rusty.
But you never know, GL might be plaining something.

pretty soon there will be nothing left of the "original" trilogy...sad really . Heck why don't they just remake the whole thing!!

NOT

You're just too inured to the flashy lightsaber fights of Episodes I and II. Back in the seventies, people didn't look for that kinda stuff, so Lucas didn't have to cater it it. Besides, SivyB makes a good point. Jedi or Sith, you can't be very agile or spry when you're nearing seventy or your limbs are mechanical.

Plus back in the Republic days- Jedi trained frequently with the lightsaber, and used it in combat situations. After they are wiped out : the "FEW" remaining Jedi go into hiding. They dont use their sabers for a long time. Their saber skills have to diminish a bit.
Vader doesnt use his saber either. You see how he chokes poeple. He doesnt need his saber to fight.....until a jedi comes along. A Jedi comes along after 20+ years of no saber action.
Of coarse the duel is going to be not up to par with the duels of old. Add the old age of the participants. We could argue this point because Dooku is as old as Obi-Wan was(give or take), but like I said it all has to do with having practice and training with the force on a regular basis.
Thats the best I can think of right now:)

Also the film was filmed in the 70's the flashy martial arts moves from kung fu/karate movies had not been adopted yet.

Lucas had not the Technology to remake them in 1996, NOW he does.

ESB and ROJ fights are very good. remember that, there were no 100 jedi, nor double saber, only 1-1 duels.

That's the best explaination I can think of.....

Well the duel in ANH between Vader and Obi-Wan is more centered on emotion and a battle of wills.

But don't let it fool you, the saber/fighting technique sthey used were impressive enough.
Obi-Wan might seem to not move much but his stance was very good, a true martial -sword-arts/fencing stance against which it is very difficult to attack and get through. He fougth extremely skilled and with good technique.
Any 'flashy' PT moves by Vader, Obi-Wan would have struck him down. He didn't rely on speed or agility but pure technique and tactics.

I liked the dueling in the OT. I think saber dueling doesnt have to be flashy and crazy ( ex. yoda VS. dooku). Its harder for the eye to catch all the moves. But with the OT duels you can see everything. They were much more elegant than than the duels in I and II:lsduel:

Good point. I could hardly see the duel between Yoda & Dooku, the blades were moving so fast. Same thing for some of the parts when Anakin and Obi-wan were fighting Dooku.

The duels in THP weren't to crazy. You could see everything that happened. If you think about them they had to be slow. Like pay attention when Darth Maul is fighting Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan. When Maul is blocking Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan could of killed Maul and vice versa. The hit Obi-Wan makes are slow and consistent. If they had been faster he would of killed Maul. Look Obi-Wan when he's attaking Maul in the very beggining of the Duel of the Fates. Obi-Wan attacks and then he spin's and attack's again. If he wouldn't of spinned he would of been able to kill Maul easier but then the duel would be over sooner than we would want. Or did he have to do the spin? I guess they made it look more elegant than just having Obi-Wan standing there waiting for his cue to hit.

the fights in 1 and 2 were excellent! Jedi are very fast and have very fast weapons so of course they would do all that fast spinny whirly stuff and I can see all the moves that yoda and tyranus do i just cant remember them and who would ever need to remember? theyre fast strong moves and thats the best kind!

The duel of fates in ep 1 was great. The duel in ep 2 (especially with yoda) was just too crazy. I just saw yoda hopping everywhere with sabers whirling around. It was too confusing

Well it was Yoda man! He had to be fast to defeat Dooku.

Forget about the age...the one thing with Yoda's size is that he must have some speed! And he sure showed that against Dooku. :)

Just think.....when the ep II DVD comes out, you'll be able to watch the fight sceen with Yoda and Dooku over and over and over and over. :D

Pretty damn exciting isn't it????

I enjoyed watching Anakin duel Dooku with the two sabers. I was kind of dissapointed that that did not last for longer than it did. It was like two swings and then Dooku cut the saber from his hand.

When I first saw the trailer I was thinking that was going to be the way the whole fight was. Then when I saw the movie I was a little disappointed.....it was still cool anyways;)

I hope we see more jedi with two sabers in ep III !

This is my opinion but I say leave the OT the way it is. If GL want's too then it's ok but all the suggestion's I don't like. Remember that GL is making the movies the way he want's them. There his vision and not anyone else's.:p

I agree with that to a point, but GL is gonna have to alter the OT somewhat to tie the movies together better.....

He must not mess with the OT duels. They're AWESOME. Precise, full of emotion, and cool. All he needs to do is fix the sabers so they look better.........

In ANH Obi-Wan was actually only 55 years. He is 25 in TPM, 35 in AOTC, 37 or so in ep3 and since there is 18 years between ep3 and ep4, he is 55 in ANH

Age doesnt matter. The OT duels were fine
