Has anyone ever thought about the origin of Darth? How did Sith get that title? I know that its just a name George made up but is there any story behind the title Darth?

the original darth, darth bane, came up with the sith and apprentice rule, as well as the darth title... i think. :o

I'm thinking it's an abbreviation of:
Dark Lord of the Sith.

Hey if Exar Kun was a Sith then why didnt he have a Darth title? Was he around before Sith decided to be called Darth?

I like Jedi Monks explanation

Exar Kun was around before the Time of Bane.
I'm probably wrong, but I heard Bane's real first name was Darth, and that, in respect to him, all Sith Lords from then on called themselves "Darth", followed by their chosen name (be it Sidious, Maul, Tyranus, Vader...). I'm not sure it does mean 'Lord' in Sith Language, because then why would people who give the Dark Lords their full title say: "Lord Darth Vader" or "Lord Darth Tyranus". That's like saying: "Lord Lord Vader", which is kinda stupid.
Either that, or Bane stuttered... :D

I've never heard anyone say Lord Darth Vader in any of the movies. It's always Lord Vader OR Darth Vader. So i like that theory.

Ya thats true you never hear Lord Darth in the movies. I only saw it in articles and news casts and stuff. Of course what in the Force do they know? So ya Darth could still mean Lord. Dont trust what the media says. Thats ANYTHING but canon. And I never saw Lord Darth in any EU either so dont bash EU for that theory.

1: I did say that it was probably wrong.
2: I hate EU, and so I won't bash it to support my theory.
3: I don't really mind how the name came about, because it's here now and it is a great name.
