View Full Version : Very basic Newbie question

I've recently been turned onto RTS games via a copy of StarCraft I found, and was curious whether Galactic Battlegrounds would satiate me further. Being the quick thinking and nimble chap that I am, I promptly downloaded a demo copy, but upon playing around I came up with nothing but questions.
#1) how do I harvest resources? Do I need specific types of units to do this, does the demo simply not start me with those units?
#2) humm.. nope, just the one question I guess. ;)
Any help would be well received.

You use units called workers, which harvest resources and build buildings. The scenerio they chose for the demo is horrible. It is only a tiny bit of what swgb is capable of. If you have any more questions feel free to ask them on my question thread (scroll down a bit). Its where anyone from beginners to experts ask questions of each other in order to have a lot more fun with the game. GB is a great game, and, although i havent played starcraft, im certain you'll like the game.

create workers, and then select the worker and right click on the resource you wish to harvest.
build processing centers nearby to collect faster. go for food and carbon first.

Alright, thank you for the prompt replies (and excuse my posting in this if it's the wrong forum ;)).
Just two last question though -->
a) how do I go about "creating" workers?
b) In starcraft, there is a command for moving troops so they defend themselves while moving. Otherwise, they act just like the units in this game and ignore enemies attacking them. If a command exists that turns on "attack while in movement" please let me know what it is.

You create Workers in the Command Centre - select the command centre and then you will see a Worker icon - click on the Worker icon to build a Worker - then you can allocate the worker to a specific resource. There are four resources - Food, Carbon, Nova and Ore. Nova is green and Ore is purple. you need to get as much Food and Carbon as you can first - then you will have enough resources to build other buildings, like Troop Centre's, War Centre's, Mech Factories, etc.
I would advise buying the game though. If you like Star Craft you will enjoy SWGB as well. In fact, i prefer SWGB to Star Craft...

Just to provide a little more info...
In a standard (non-campaign) game, either against the computer or online/network players, the command center is the one building you start off with. You typically start off with 3 workers and a scout as well, unless it's an asteroid style map, in which case you also get an air transport.
In campaign games what you start with depends on how the scenario works. You may not ever have a chance to build units, you may start out with numerous buildings and units, or it may begin very similar to the standard game.

Thank you all again for the input.
From everything told to me, I'll surmise that the demo mission falls under the campaign exception to the standard game rule of starting me with a command center, as Kryllith was so kind to inform me.
Ohh well, and to think I thought I was doing something wrong ;)..
btw- is there a "fire while moving" command?

Attack-move is not in the game. It was going to be added in the xpack, but they couldnt figure out how to do it. Personally, i find it really bad in AoM because units never retreat from battle no matter how hard you click. I lost many units to towers before i figured out what was going on.
If you get the game, it has a very good learning campaign which answers practically most of the question someone would have when playing the game.
