of course I can, learned to drive on one...
makes for more attentive/safe driving if you know how the car works/is going to react.
whats your view?
I drive one every day! I used to have an automatic and now I've had this Jetta for about 2 and a half years, I really enjoy it. I think it will be hard to go back to an auto.....
As for safety Spy, I like the manual because I feel I can control the speed better than in a automatic (unless of course you're in a Seattle traffic jam and you go from 65 to 15 in like 3 seconds :p ).

r u joking?
LOL, automatic is very very rare here in the UK probably only 10 percent of all cars are autos, and even then the only ones you really find with auto are mercs or beemers. I couldnt stand automatic when i tried it. much harder to drive fast!
Show me the redline!!!!

hrmm... holding speed is one, but I use the cruse for that;)
no, I was talking more about being able to downshift on a corner if needed.
also, for max acceleraion, its very nice when you drive- how to put this... a horsepower challenged car.
one time, I was driving my sisters saturn, pulled onto hwy 30, and I really thought the thing was gonna get me killed!
I pull out there, shove my foot to the floor, and it wont DOWNSHIFT! it desided to stay in 2nd gear lockup.....
needless to say, I had a talk with her about it:p
if I was driving my VW, it woulda been in 2nd gear, doing 3500 by the time the clutch was out:D
Exactly what I was talking about......just in different words :p The control over the car is much greater IMO!
What kind of Vw do you have??? Mine is a 97 Jetta.....

I have a '99 beatle.... which engine do you have, the base gas, the VR6, or the TDi?
if you got the TDi, you got a gem there:) with that huge clutch, and that wastegated turbo..... *gruntgruntgrunt!*:D
Man I wish I had the TDi!! But no, I have to deal with the VR6.....:D Which still has plenty of giiiddddyyyyep for me!! ;)
The next car I get will be a VW as well, the TDi is on the wishlist....not sure which car to get though......decisions, decisions, decisions....:giggle1:

word from the wise; get the chip... upslalute or nothing man... mileage went UP!
if they dont win you over nothing will.
heres a list for people who dont know.
1: oil only needs to be changed every 10000mi/16000km
2: no more stalling on starts from bad clutch work(you pop clutch, car dont stall:D)
3: 48 miles to the gallon! 38 with a automatic!
4: make little toy hondas with fake plastic wings run home to momma(do not try at home)
5: guy behind you tailgating you in traffic?put car in 5th and step on it. mack truck....;) j/k
6: did I mention the handling? its still good.
7: the bad part is, the service people at the dealers are worth less then pureed donkey ****... but not a TDi problem, VW problem...
8: fuel costs less then gas in most parts of the USA. mush less then 91octaine that VR6 likes:p
9: the turbo whine
10: the raw low end power avalable.... *gruntgruntgrunt!*
leemu, you should look into the new vw SUV with the V10(!!!) TDi
310hp, 500lb/ft toruqe, 30MPG:D
Thanks for that great info SPY!! I have seen that new SUV, looks great  I think I'll just write a check for that one huh?? ;)
This guy I work with has a corrado and a GTI and we frequent the pages of vwvortex.com while @ work........now I'll be the first to tell you I don't know a whole lot about this stuff (just like cpus) but I'm learning!
I have heard that dealers aren't worth a damn......:(
You're right, I need to get the chip!!!
I do love the sound of that turbo!!
Hey the vw I do want is that new limited edition GolfR32 or 23?? Man, that is one sweeeeet ride! :D

Yeah... Hahahaha.. What Jah said. ^^
Although I'd say 10% would be a wee bit too much here in Finland.. maybe 5-7% are automatic.
BUT I do happen have an automatic myself and I'm loving it. Got a turbo with 200hp and 350Nm, so even though the automatic slows it down..it's quite enough for me. ;)
Driving is much smoother but if I wanted to RACE...then I'd naturally go with a manual. :)

I do prefer manual, but I own an automatic BMW, which is alright for the moment. I think someone commented on automatics being difficult to speed in? Correct: I love driving fast, and my first car was amazing for burning up long, straight streaches of road. However, the automatic does make building up speed a chore, and so I'm thinking of selling the BMW quite soon... just as long as my next pay packet is on time...
Some call me a rich bastard, others call me best friend and ask for some money...
I find it quite hysterical that this thread even exsists! lol
Driving a car involves the use of a clutch, anything else is just darn right lazyness. :D

I learned on an auto, and got comfy with it... and then had to move onto manual, and didnt like it.
But then I got my licence and got my own manual... now I wouldnt be caught dead driving an auto... Which is why as soon as my mum bequeaths her car to me I'm selling it and buying an old 928 or a delorean.
Manuals the way to go man :D

Hey there best buddy ole' pal o' mine, how are you doing? Can I have some money? :D
Now to the thread topic - I learned on a manual, I drive a manual now, and I will continue to drive a manual. Like it's been said a zillion times already, it's just too hard to get up to speed in an automatic (which is dangerous if you're getting on a highway or something).
And has anyone seen the new Viper? 0-60 in 3.9 seconds...

no, but isn't it you step on the clutch peddle, shift it, then let go?
like most eyropeans i also drive a maual gear car. havent driven with an automatic and i really dont want. selecting gears is what makes driving intresting. shifting back in a corner accelerate, shift up.:)
i drive a manual that used to be an auto .... until it was converted
as jah said ... few cars are auto over here in the Uk ... we can cope with a clutch

well, i know i slated autos, but there are exceptions to the rule.
When the new S-Class Merc came out my dad had a test drive in one an S430 (i believe). He came over to my house and picked me up to go for a spin, I had a little razz in it and jesus crist this ting was quick. Apart from being a ruffneck motor this thing absolutely flew when you used kick down.
PS the satellite navigation was amazing and surprisingly easy to use, we had only travelled 1/2 mile before we had figured out how to enter your destinationa dn it would even talk to you and tell you which turns to take, and it coulod correct ot self should you go the wrong way on purpose.
what if u go wrong by accident?
does it sit there an laugh :)
Jah Warrior
10-29-2002, 11:49 AM
it doesnt just laugh, it insults you and posts a message at lucasforums to ridicule you even further....
i almost offered the sat nav out for a fight i tell you man!!! ;) :D :)

I can't drive a manual. But I can't drive anything I'm not old enough.:evil6:
My dad used to have a Automatic, until we went on holiday and it got stolen, how I laughed when he screamed down the phone "WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!" :p

Manual all the way, everytime I step into an automatic, have to tell myself not to use my left leg, which here in Australia is for the clutch....
Whilst at school driver ed courses, about 3 of us were able to start and accelerate from 2nd gear. Being so used to old bombs to drive around the farm, clutch control was one of our finer skills we didn't realised we had learnt....

Yeah, it's a great skill to have. This summer, instead of doing pool construction/hard labor, I was able to drive the truck and just clean pools because I knew how to.

I still have an old Ford pickup truck that has the gear shifter on the steering wheel. Nobody but me can drive it, but then again, nobody would really want to either.

Automatic is easier, but I had to learn on manual and drive one every day so I've gotten used to it. I have a '73 Volkswagen Bug which is hard to shift, though and gets mad when I try to put it into gear.

Can't really pretend to be a race care driver in an automatic though.

Isn't the clutch on the left everywhere?
I drive a standard. It's grand, weird when i drive me mums automatic because i'm always reaching down to grab the stick....and it's not there! ;)

I am good with a cluch. My Nissan Sentra has one. I learn a automatic and a cluch side by side so it is easy. I like the control a cluch has and also you generaly know how fast you are going by the gear you are in and sound of the engine. And it is good to know how incase your life depended on it.

It is in the USA. When I drove my family's van(Automatic) I hit the parking brake on accident(It is a foot brake)

I like driving my standard, it does give a lot of control. Automatic is nice, sometimes, though. I drive my girlfriends 2000 Civic EX almost as much as I drive my own, and it can be nice to not have to worry about shifting, just let the car do it for you. Although it can make you lazy...

It is very important to know. Say someone is trying to kill you and the only way to get away from him is to drive a car with a cluch. If you don't know you are dead.
