Since I am the only one in the Swamp right now:((you all left me?...why?...WHY?) , I have decided to conduct a survey concerning the ownership of mobile telephones, called cell phones in the US and Canada I believe.

It is becoming a big problem in England in my eyes. Children as young as 9 are being bought mobile phones and spending money like there is no tomorrow. Do you have a mobile phone? What do you think the minimum age should be to have one?

You thoughts please...

:)

I have no need for such a pop item.

First of all, it would take a lot of money to talk and send all those messages, and I do not have that kind of money right now.

It is usually "forced" upon people by group pressure and pop society - trust me when I say that most people who own one and feel dependant on it, really doesn't need one, and their dependance is all in their head.

For instance, when somebody who owns a mobile gets a call or message (mostly teenie girls, but a good example), they'll cry "I've got friends, yipeee!"
They really only use it to further their ego and popularity in a group. Another act of idiocy is to act like you're talking on your mobile while walking in the city or taking the bus - only thing is that you're not really talking with someone except yourself and only do so because it looks cool.

Before people cry: "It's so useful and I'm very dependant on it" - know that I could say the same thing about lava lamps.

There shouldn't be a minimum age requirement, but kids at the age of 8 or 9 should really consider if they need a mobile that bad.

Where does the "cell" in cell phone come from, btw?

Well, you should do a few good searches on it. My family doesnt own many Cell Phones. Only my mom and dad do. But in USA, almost every family has at least one cell phone.

Tyrion?! Why you little...

I told you to post, but within reason:mad:

:plol

I have a mobile phone, and I am 16. I think it's only at this age that people need them. Maybe not even 16. I mean it's a good way of keeping in touch with people, and very useful for going out and about and letting people know where you are. Text messaging is also good, though it costs a lot of money.

Ty, better make that post worthwhile within the next few minutes, else it'll be -1 for you.

Cell, I think, comes from the battery, which uses cells to power the phone.

Personally, I have no need for a cell phone. I can dig up 50 cents to make a phone call from a pay phone. Sure, it's convienient at times, but like everyone's said, it is usually a huge waste of money. Not to mention that we don't know the long term effects of carrying cell phones so close to our reproductive organs and what kind of effects that'll have 50 years down the road. I do not want to find out personally.

i have one, and i got one because i went to high school (age:12, almost 13) and my parents wanted to be albe to riech me if something happends. i know some kids that have a cell phone when they are 8:eek: it's just stupid, i think that going to highscool must be a line, because you'll be more away from home.

nine: never thought of it actualy, it could be extremely bad for us:( well, i build up tha happid when i'm sitting somewhere, i lay my cell phone somewhere else, like next to me:D

Hell yeah, I've got a cell phone! :D It is the only phone I've got....I don't have a home phone (now referred to as "land-line"). I get free long distance and it is a great way to go! I have caller ID so I don't have to answer the phone when I don't want to talk to someone! It's a nice feature to have!!! ^_^

I do not own a cell phone but my Mom does. From what I have seen recently, the companies get more and more desperate to sell them. I mean they now come with actual games. Full color games. And the comercials, ugh. Its one thing to buy a phone and another to buy a cell phone with all these crap features that a lot of ppl don't need. And ringtones. What is the point of ringtones. Whoopee! I get to hear a badly imatated version of a song I like. Well used to like because the ringtone made me hate it.

they ARE useful ... and a good way of keeping in contact with yer mates

sure you could live without texting yer mates a bit but thats not my main use of 1

i live in the country .... not quite the middle of nowhere ... but close

there arent many payfones about .... also ... for example

when i rolled my mini (im sure u seen the fotos) i NEEDED my mobile to ring my sister to come help me sort it out

if i didnt have my mobile i wouldve had to walk for about 20 minutes to get to a fone .... if id been injured ... that wouldnt be possible ... there werent many people around ... that wouldve put me in a BAAAAAAAAAADD situation

sure it costs a bit ... but if u dont like the cost ... dont pay it

Side Note: Cell comes from the fact that the transmitters create cells of reception around them (all at different carrier frequencies so they dont interfere) and you fone communicates with the transmitter of the cell its in .... hence the name

could also come from the battery ... but its not a cell ... its a group of cells ... my physics book said it was from transmitter cells

1. i will have a job, therefore i will be able to pay the bill for using it
2. to call friends or parents to pick me up if i have to work late or something....
3. my sister will be 14 by then, and we all kno teenage girls (most of em) never get off the phone.....

Camera .... hmmmm ur right this 1's useless

MP3 player ... you got a fone ... you got an mp3 player .... Combine .... save pocket space (cos i know u lot like pocket snooker ;) j/k)

I've had a mobile for as long as I can remember. They are extremely useful and give me piece of mind. I know that as soon as my daughters start secondary school, I will be giving them mobile phones AND strict instructions that they are only to be used in emergency.

I must admit, I'm a bit of a SMS freak, I send on average 5 a day and receive countless.

Yep, I have one.

Personally I find it really useful. I don't use it as much as the average teenage girl here in Norway, but it does see it's fair share of usage.

HERETICS!! YOU'RE ALL HERETICS!!! GAAAAAARRHHHH!...

Really, people think the pc is invaluable today, much the same as with microwave ovens, lava lamps, multiple tv's, playstation's, digital watches, electricity and cars... ...is the world coming to an end?

BAH! I'm moving back to the vikings, they could make do without all of this fancy crap! So long fellas!

It has nothing to do with pop society. I have my phone because it is a handy thing to have, not to look 'cool'. I hardly ever bring it out in public and I certainly don't pose with it. I answer all my texts at home when I have time. I'm sure if someone gave you a mobile for christmas, you wouldn't refuse it.

I personally think its ridiculous for anyone under the age of 16 to have a cell phone. I mean, why would they need one. Its not like they can go driving or even go to parties. now for someone that is of legal age to drive, preferably above 16, even 17, that would be more understandable, because they drive (alot) and are out more and the alike.

leXX
11-19-2002, 05:39 PM
@clem - I'm quite happy to pay £10 a month to know that my children can contact me in an emergency, economic choice or not.

@andy - you think you have to drive or go to parties to get into hassle these days, I don't think so.

If I ever get a mobile, it shall be as big as a brick, eighties yuppie style, and the only ringtones on it shall be eighties music... I. Shall. Be. A. Misfit.

Besides, it's the phone bills that's gonna burn a hole in my pocket - ever since I made that slip up at work, my wallet's been very slim... :(

i blame having 1 on my ex-gf ... i used my mums lots to text her ... and then mum helped me pay for my own ..... and it went from there

many a year back now tho

andy ... y not? y cant under 16's socialise .... its not just for organising parties ... its for communication overall

quite simply with PC's and Mobiles .... people talk to each other even more ... that cant be bad thing

yes, I have one. no I cannot stand ringtones, I want to see if I can find the nessasery speed needed to put a cell phone thrugh a wall when I hear one in public.

I use it mainly for emergencys(hav'nt needed it yet) and work...

plus, its got breakout, which has saved my butt a few times, lemme tell you:D

Clem

ringtones have their uses

they allow u to tell if its ur fone ringing

i agree however its gone OTT (what doesnt)

personally i just have mine on silent vibrate all the time .... then i know if it rings and no1 else does

because, they will not have 'their own money' at the age of 11 unless they do underaged work such as work for Rhett. ;) They will have pocketmoney of course, but I don't think that is going to cover the cost of using a mobile do you? When they get jobs they are free to do as they wish with regards to their phones but until then I will be in charge.

I don't have one yet but when I get one I will use for better things than to just look cool. I will use it in case I ever need to contact my parents. I would also use to coordinate with my friends if ever we are planning to do something and we are on the move. Last but not least I would use to call my Girlfriend who lives in Wisconsin. We talk a lot and I have past expiernces with phone bills. It is a lot cheaper than using homephones. You also can get free night and weekend minutes. I would use it for stuff like that. I would never get a phone and pay money if I was just going to have it for looks. To me it would be a tool to use that would make things easier for me.

I have a pretty nice Samsung phone, got it about a month ago. I like it, it lets me keep in touch with friends whenever I need to, or its good for emergencys. Sure, I can live without it, and I've never used the messaging thing yet. But it doesnt hurt.

Besides, it gives me free long distance, so if I have to call my friends out in the western NY colleges, I use the cell.

And technically, it's "cellular" phone...

I have a Nokia 6210. Nice phone, a pretty big brick of a mobile phone but it gets the job done:Dlol

To be honest I never used to use my phone that much. I'm on Vodafone 'Pay As You Go', and it used to take me about a month to use up my £15 so I could top up lol. Now I use it for text messaging a lot. It's expensive. Very expensive:(lol

My fiancee and I both are on the same cell phone plan and before we lived together this thing SAVED US SO MUCH MONEY. Its great when you get free mobile to mobile. Plus both of us are on the go so much it is very convienant to be able to get a hold of eachother especially with the baby on the way. Another reason I feel comfortable having it is because I work the Graveyard shift. I have to drive late at night - and I don't want to be stranded somewhere and have to walk alone in the dark to get to some sort of phone! It is also nice to have if your like me and never home. I think it is annoying when people abuse the phones though. It doesn't seem to make much sense to me when people have them go off at work or when your in line for the grocery store and people are having full blown conversations. But if its to say hey honey pick up some milk! Then I'm all for the quick use of the cell. I think the min age should be .... JR High maybe High School age. I would want my son to have one - and HUGELY make sure he is not abusing it or using it for personal calls. I would want it to have for emergencys. When he starts driving or to be able to call me in case he needed me to pick him up. You can have the cell phone be set up so it can only call one of the phones in the plan. I wouldn't want him just calling his friends during school!

I just sold my cell phone today on eBay. I used it for long distance calls.. much cheaper than the service, but alas it's not cheap enough, so bye bye phone!

I mainly found cell phones a huge annoyance though. People could get in touch with me whenever they wanted! Yuck!

Don't get me started on the ridiculous ring tones polluting my ears now...

Yes, I have one. I've had one for two years. My parents got it for me when I got my permit in case I ever needed help. It's come in handy more than once, and I'm glad I have it.

But I do find it extremely annoying when I see 10 year olds talking on them, being very loud and important-sounding on them. Or when it rings in the movies, or when one rings at a resaurant. For God's sake, turn them off, or put them on the rumble feature.

I've got a cell phone, and I love it. Free long distance, free mobile-2-mobile: its all good. It's actually cheaper than a house phone for what everyone in my family uses their phones for. In fact, we don't even have a house phone, we just all carry our cells with us. They're handy for letting the parents know where you are and talking to your friends if you're out and about. I especially like text messaging. I pay the extra $8 a month becuz I use it so much. This girl Charlene and I send at least 10 back and forth every day. I like the vibrate feature too, and how you can hit a button and say the name of somebody and itll call them. It's great.
