View Full Version : Dutch interview

I received a Dutch Magazine called "Echo Base" this morning, which had an interview about Knights of the Old Republic with the producor of KOTR, Julio Torres... (amongst his credentials are "Rogue Squadron", "X-Wing Alliance" and "Episode I: Racer".

Although most of it is news that I had read before, there were some things in there that I found most interesting... allow me to quote..

Q: There are different minigames in the game. Will the player be capable of playing these, apart from the game itself?

A: No, I'm afraid not. We wanted these to act as a 'break' in the game. The RPG is very story-oriented, and we wanted to have some lighter moments in the game, like firing the turrets on the Ebon Hawk, racing on swoopbikes, and playing a card game.

Q: A card game? Maybe Sabacc, the game that Lando Calrissian was playing the original trilogy?

A: Yes, that's right.

Q: What kind of new and original stuff will be added in the game?

A: There will be a new race, about which I won't spoil anything. We have an unknown planet, the Ebon Hawk, which I've told oyu about before. And of course, Darth Malak, de bad guy of the game. And maybe the most important part of the game : How he will be behave to you if you're a Dark or Light Jedi.
And there's also something that I must mention. This game will play like a RPG, but it will look like an action game, aka Jedi Knight, even though it will remain a full-fledged RPG. I really suspect that we've created something new and original with this.

Q: Will there be new lightsabers in this game?

A: Yes, Lucasfilm hasn't forbidden for us to add more lightsaber colors than you'll usually see to the game. So you'll have more colors lightsaber than before. You also have the possibility to build your own lightsaber, and if you don't like it, you can build another. And there's an option that we'll add one with special additions, but I can't say wether it'll be added to the final game. But there will be a difference in the lightsabers.

Q: Is George Lucas interested in Star Wars computer games?

A: He most certainly is. He views computers games as one of the few ways to expand the Star Wars saga after Episode III. Thus he wants that the games are great and show good quality.
George played a huge part with this game. He was very curious how Bioware would adapt to the time period, because it plays such a long time before Star Wars. In the end, he made the decision wether the game would be made or not. Quality IS an important part.
Well, there have been some lesser Star Wars games, like "Demolition" and "Jedi Power Battles", whilst you were sure that you had an original and great game several years earlier when it came to a Star Wars / Lucasarts game.
That's amongst the reason that Lucasarts' strategy in producing computer games has changed. After the release of Episode I, we released way too many games on the market. This has led that many games were not only dissapointing to the fans, but also the employees. Some people even left the company because of this! That's why we won't make the games ourselves anymore. Instead, we request the help of companies who've created the best games in several genres, like Bioware has with RPG Games. This way, we guarantee that you'll get the best product available.

Q: If KOTOR becomes a huge success, will there be a sequel? Or another story/adventure which takes part in the same time period?
A: I would love to make another game in this time period, because we have many ideas which we haven't incorporated into the game yet. But we are not working on anything yet. Let's first finish this game, and see what kind of feedback we can get.

Here you go. There is some additional stuff in this interview about the music, and the differences between the X-Box and the PC Version, stuff like that.

I like some of the things that I read here, 'tho I'm somewhat dissapointed with what I've read about lightsabers. I always thought that sabers were an important part in becoming a Jedi, but now I kinda picture it like "Hey, this saber sucks. I'll throw it away and build a new one"... then again, this might make it more easier to wield two sabers... We'll see.
