Ok I Finally Beat Grim Fandango tonight,

Was It Ever Explanied what Manny did in life to deserve working for the DOD to pay off his time?

No. And I like to think that it's better to have some mystery with Manny's background, so as far as I'm concerned it's a good thing.

Although there have been some rumours of a sequel...

I will have to kill someone if the potential sequel would involve Manny in any way.

Gabez

Or even a prequel. There’s been rumors of that too.

A prequel wouldn't be too bad. It could justifyably involve Manny

But the whole point... well ok not the whole point, but parts of it... of Grim was that you weren't supposed to know Manny's past. It's very typical film-noir to just get thrown into a situation without knowing everything that happend before it. Taking that away with a prequel would kinda ruin the mood of it for me.

Yeah, good point. Maybe a kind of prequel not involving Manny then? Something delving into more Mexican Folklore?

If they were to do a sequel, I'd like to see them doing something with a new character, and use different movies as inspiration. Grim borrowed a lot from Chinatown and Casablanca, so it'd be cool to see a Grim 2 doing something like North By Northwest or something. I don't know.

If they did something completely different but in the same world, Lucas Arts would get blamed for ripping off an old product and re-manufacturing old ideas. I think then that they'd need to be some of the same characters. Do you think there's enough of Glottis to carry a story? I mean, he got left with those little demons...

Absolutely. We have to take Manny as he is in the Land of the Dead. Suppose we were told he was a child pornographer or a drug smuggler? The character doesn't need that kind of baggage. It's enough to know he messed up his life. We don't need details.

I don't think it would really be something like that because those are against human law and humans don't control the Underworld. Perhaps he broke at least one of the 10 commandments, like robbed a bank or something.

I don't know.

Back to topic: I'll love a sequel or a prequel. If there's gonna be a prequel it could be cool, 'cause you can see what happend before. Not in the Land of the Living, but when Manny arrived to The Land of the Dead. (I'll love to see the christmas-party :) )

I think if they made a Grim Fandango 2 it would be like Monkey Island 3 - a totally amazing and brilliant game, but would forever tarnish the legacy of the earlier games.

It's a double-edged issue.
Sure, we would like to see the Land of the Dead again and experience the wonders that GF has but on the other hand, we are afraid that the game would be a lesser experience than the first one.
Of course, if they did go and make a sequel they could make it in another city wth other characters perhaps. That way, it would''nt be directly connected to the first game.

One advantage with a prequel is that we hopefully would see the christmas-party. I'm also very curious...

Wait, wait, wait. Am I just really confused? Because I thought the whole thing was that Manny wasn't really supposed to be working at the DOD and instead had his Double-N ticket stolen just like Meche's... or was it that the ... wait, does he have a ticket at the end?

Oh my christ, I think I'm completely confused. heh. That's what I get for skipping dialogue.

I believe he was issued a ticket at the end for a "job well done". I don't think his ticket was stolen.

HMM! Sounds familiar!

Grim Fandango is not a game to be given a sequel, or a prequel. The story had just enough mystery to let the imagination run, t'was a great story with many layers, and to give it a sequel would taint it. Besides, Grim was the last original adventure game - we need another brand spanking new character who can creep into our dreams and share our television interests.

just like Loom! It's a loner! A sequel or prequel could turn out perfect but there's a big chance itll stand in the shadow of its predecessor so lets keep them loners

BooJaka

I'm not sure about Loom. I think it could have a great sequel and I for one am still holding out for one.

The Dig however should never have a sequel/prequel.

He'd also done the full four year journey.

maybe he never realy did anything...he might of stayed in the land of dead for a personal reason. maybe he was able to make that 4 year journey the whole time, he was just affraid to go or maybe he was waiting for somthing

ThunderPeel2001

 He was most likely being used by the DoD past his actual "contract" with the netherworlds. But even if he wasn't, I'm sure the fact that he saved Meche and uncovered a sinister plot would have been enough community service to get him through.

It would be interesting if the prequel to GF ended with Manny indavertently causing pain to someone by accident... Or maybe that's how it could start. A whole prequel to GF could be set in his "glory days" (when he had his big office) and he'd just started out! Cool!

a "glory days" prequal would be very cool, but it shouldn't be in the Land of the Living. I also think a sequal with a corrupted high power in the Ninth Underworld would be very cool.
