Original post (note masive changes in direction from original idea to final product, promised features not included, loss of central premise I started with etc):

That's a working title at the moment...not sure what to call it.

It's the follow on to Occupation. If you have a version with Kyle invisible, working versions are avaliable at:

http://massassi.net/levels/files/2578.shtml

----------------------------------------------
The next map continues on from Occupation, but follows a different group, a squad of 7 Republic assualt soldiers, lead by Lt. Marshall, your character. It will start with exploration and fighting in parts of the town seen in Occupation, before moving into the castle.
So far I've got the blue laser rifle mod by Spectrum (author of Omnimod), which replaces the imperial repeater, working in this map. I thought it made little sense for Republic soldiers to carry imperial guns into battle...and I'm gonna say the blue laser rifle is an upgrade on the model the clonetroopers used some 50 years (ish) previously.
There are a lot of non working bits of scripting, some even work. I'm aiming for a opposing force feel, with lots of tension build up, lots of shooting, and some team ased combat. Your squad aren't as utterly rubbish as say the republic soldiers or the bespin police from jk2, they will be tough, good shots and heavily armed.

I've had alot of comments about the voice acting, a lot good, a lot bad, so if anyone can remember any voice actors who they thought were really good or bad in particular, I'd be keen to know. Particulalrly interested in what people thought of the voice actor who played Kyle.

Try experimenting with the textures you use...break up repeating textures on walls and floors, and try to fit them according to what works best in the level. That's the only real weakness I think your maps have, and it's easily fixed.

I was disappointed with the single-player "team-based" combat in JKSP...Jan didn't do any good, Bespin cops were useless, and the Jedi Academy students were all shadow trooper fodder. I hope you're going to find some way to really make the player feel like they have a "team," and not just extra targets to distrct their enemies. Some scripted events where your teammates are useful might help in that regard. I'd like to see this when it's done, hope you can pull it off! We need good SP levels!

Kengo

I'm gonna make a big effort to improve textures and using architecturing to break them up, I think you're right it needs work.

Yeh, me too. I can't believe how bad the rebel and bespin_cops were...one stromtrooper would beat them in a one on one! I'm making all the team members a lot tougher, so they can actually hold their own. They're also getting decent guns (the blue guns work like imperial repeaters on single fire), and improved stats like accuracy and intelligence,. I'm trying to vary them a bit too, the Trandosahn guy in the team is super tough, wheras the Rodain ain't so tough as the rest, but is quicker. I wana make them each very individual - and make the team function with each members specialities. It ain't anything like opposing force or a good team based RPG, but if nothing else, they will be able to shoot straight and take more than two shots :)

Work on the map halted for a few weeks with the tutorial writing, but now that's done for now I'm back to it. Below is a pic of Republic Landing force (the lighting needs some work so I brightened the pic up some). Any ideas for what I should include? So far: X-Wings, A-wings, Shuttles, a couple of tanks, laser fence, a few trenches, some supplies and crates, and lots of troops :)

Kengo, don't you need a new skybox? ;)

Eldritch
02-16-2003, 07:00 PM
I'm in agreement with Leslie - that skybox has got to go (unless it actually is taking place on Yavin IV).

wedge2211
02-16-2003, 07:05 PM
I would suggest adding trees/mountains along the perimeter of the area to provide a border between the terrain and the skybox, rather than having a "square world" that looks like the player can just drop right off the edge. And how about trusty old Y-Wings?

Another idea about more intelligent team members: is it possible to make your team NPCs use MP bot-like behavior? MP bots are much harder than the run-of-the-mill single-player goonies.

Kengo
02-16-2003, 08:41 PM
Man, I just managed to stop the .map file working....too me 15 mins to get the .BAK file going! I *knew* I wasn't ready to mess with 'simple' patch meshes. They make no sense to me. Despite that.....brrr....thanks guys, yeh, the skybox/map transition doesn't look right, I'll work on getting that looking better. I have to say I'm probabaly too lazy to make a new skybox, the place is basically a forest so other than the big red planet, the yavin sky texture ain't bad....hmmm.

Dunno about the bot style behavoir, certainly MP bots are better! Setting all the intelliegence levels to 5 seems to help a fair bit, they follow you further and better.

Shadriss
02-16-2003, 09:07 PM
If you need some help with Patch meshes, let me know - I've used them quite a bit... Not to hard for me anymore.

On subject, I like what I see so far... except for that 14 FPS on the first screenshot. I know it's still real early, but I felt a need to point out that that NEEDS to improve.

Other than that, I'm liking this idea... hope it all works out.

Kengo
02-16-2003, 09:20 PM
Damnit! Knew I should have taken the FPS counter off....

Hmm, I didn't find that bit choppy at all, not sure why FPS was so low at that point :( That area needs some work, more architecture to break it up some, you can see too far methinks.

Thanks for the offer :) For now I've wimped out and decided I don't need any yet...this may change!

Wedge, I'd like to put Y-wings in, but I've had some weird problems with the excellent looking Y-Wing prefab.

Yes, looking promising, but I absolutely agree with the skybox issue. And related to that: does somebody know if there's such a plug-in for Terragen that a poor artist like me could add some trees'n'wood in the rendering process? That would also allow Kengo to change his skybox.

Leslie Judge
02-17-2003, 04:08 AM
Don't know about one. I know that Terragen is much easier to use than Bryce, but as a last chance there it is, with trees and other stuff...

Kengo
02-17-2003, 08:58 AM
Maybe I'll look into getting an artist to make a skybox for me...any offers? :D

Just compiling now...I've added about a million barrles, boxes and containers, trenches infront of the mounds (it makes sense), a load of trees and a few droids :)

Make the skybox light-emitting, it'll look better.

You might try making mounds by putting flat patch meshes even with the ground and then dragging their central vertices upwards. It'll make more of a natural "rolling terrain" effect.

Kengo

http://massassi.net/ec/images/9951.jpg

I'm MUCH happier with it now, basically just made the lighting better, it looked like JK before....

Like you say Wedge, I'll try to get some rolling terrain feel to the ground, then that should be it for this section. Then I just need to finalise the rest of the script, and I can start the actual normal mapping :)

Kengo
02-17-2003, 08:38 PM
http://massassi.net/ec/images/9963.jpg

Added a few bits of curved ground, made the mounds curved and more realistic looking, added a curved bank at one end, fiddled with tree positioning, put a load of rebel troops into the trenches (I'd rather be there if I was one of them). Here is a different angle of the landing area. That tall structure is a transmitor, there is a field generator near it (connected by a cable).

I will work on more camera work, explosions and general fighting, and maybe a few X-Wing fly-bys, when I get down to doing the scripting of this cutscene. For now I'm happy with the architecture, texturing and lighting. Now, onto the castle :)

Leslie Judge
02-18-2003, 07:05 AM
OK, I'll try to make you a custom skybox with trees and other stuff. Don't count on it however. :D

Kengo
02-18-2003, 11:21 AM
Thanks a lot man :) I feel the current one is adequate, so if you don't manage to make one then it's not a prob for the map, but a good custom skybox would be a big improvement :D

Thanks man, the thing with the lighting wasn't intentional but I see what you mean. I might put in the time in the cutscenes, does anyone have any idea how time works in SW? I'm always nervous of having a character say "Be there in 10 minutes" - do they have minutes?

On to more important issues than the map, I spent AGES picking the colour for the glow around my name. I mean absolutely AGES. I gotta question my life, I mean, just imagine what else I could have done with the time....I could probabaly have written in book in that amount of time.

Feedback about my map may as well stop now, as I have a confession to make: the only reason I made the map was to have a WIP thread, so I could get a lot of points to get the glow. Now I have the glowing name, there is no need to continue the thread or the map. So the feedback I want from now on is this: what do you think of the glow colour?

Ah, good point about the Death Star, thanks :)

As for the points, just do what I've done, create a WIP thread about a non existant map project :)

I might send you some points being as I have the glowing colour, which is all I really wanted to spend the points on, except the MIDI song which is a distant dream at the moment. I expect the right to do an interview with ya for PlanetIRG or maybe a statue of me in a map or something....

The security area is about done, here are some shots, and onto the next area! Oh, the skybox is temporary, that's why you can see the corners and there are trees etc.

http://massassi.net/ec/images/10204.jpg

A little random - you won't be playing Kyle, the rebels won't look like that (not all of them anyway), the stormtroopers won't look like that...but the outside of the pillar explodes, matrix lobby scene style! I've done this before, but consider this an innovation. So sue me.

Notice I'm not just throwing in a really nice prefab for no reason other than to pull my map out of medicority - there is a context. It's being used to build an oddly stone henge style ...thing.

It would be a great honour to beta test it, even if I only got to do it through unscrupulous methods! Oh really? Well I'll have you know that aside from being a pretty damn fine top notch mapper (in my mind at least), I also keep my lightsaber....erm...sharpened. I'm a pretty feared saberist (OK, feared is the wrong word). Being as Leslie has also challenged me to a duel at some point, I suggest we should set up some sort of big free for all some time, to sort out exactly that I am the best saberist! We could even do it WWE style and have long drwan out rivalries and vendettas, changing of sides at the last minute and general stuff like that.

Also, as Leslie has rightly indicated, this thread has gone off topic a bit...still, this is a good thing at the moment as it covers up the fact I haven't actually done any work on the map for a few days, and as such don't currently have anything to show. If any moderators are reading this - the showcasing is on the way, honest!

Hey Aru, I thought we agreed to keep my difficulties with vertexes quiet ;)?

In the Judge's opinion this is not cruel enough. So he sends in a few thousands of battle droids and clone troopers. Sits back comfortably with popcorn in one hand and Coke in the other.

Kengo

(Aru-Wen sits quietly in a bar, covered in bandages. All his hair has been burnt off.)

Suddenly, a figure is framed in the doorway.

*Kengo steps into the bar, unbeknown to Aru-Wen.*

*Kengo picks up a pool cue and smacks Aru over the head with it, as Aru is still stunned Kengo picks Aru up (Kengo works out!) and throws him onto the pool table, which collapses.*

*Kengo then goes across to the side of the bar, rips an electic gambling machine off the wall and drops it on Aru, who is still lying barely conscious on the collpased pool table.*

Kengo goes to the bar

Kengo (to the bartender): Gambling sure is a terrible thing. Whisky please.

*14 of Leslie's battle droids step into the bar*

Kengo: Oh great, some of Leslie's henchmen

*Kengo picks up a bottle from behind the bar and throws it at the first battle droid, fragile as it is, it falls apart, pieces of it fall into the others, who also spontaneous fall apart.*

Kengo: And that's the end of that....whisky please.

[Man, they just don't build those battle droids like they used to. You forgot about the one that tripped over the pile of rubble covering me who then fell to pieces on the ground. :D]

*Aru struggles to free himself from the rubble as the King and Michael Cole talk*

Cole : King, did you SEE what Kengo just did to Aru-Wen?

King : YEAH, I SAW IT! I can't believe it! He dumped a whole pile of stuff on him! What a cowardly attack, hitting him in the back like that! What're we gonna do?!

Cole : I'm suprised to see Kengo alive after being dropped 50ft inside a tank, a move that was orchestrated by Aru-Wen last Thursday on Smackdown!

*plays clip of the crane dropping the tank to the ground*

(The fire extinguisher runs out, and Aru is distracted by another 20 battle droids charging into the building, not to mention a couple of Rancors.... Kengo regains some degree of consciousness)

Kengo (to camera): I don't like the use of the words "cowardly attack" King!
King: Hey, I didn't know they could hear us!
Cole: It's these damn microphones, they're on!
JR: Well, obviously I want to see Kengo win, 'cause he's on Raw
King: NO JR! He's on Smackdown!
JR: I said "HES ON RAW"

(A fight breaks out between JR and King, Micheal Cole continues the commentry)

Cole: Man, he hit him with giant slab of concrete, where did he get that???

Kengo: Erm, would you mind commentating on THIS match?
Cole: Oh sorry, I was just amazed JR could lift that.

(Aru has just finished off the last of the battle droids, the Rancors have run off to form a new boy group, called 'Ra|\|KOR')
Aru: How did you survive that 50ft fall Kengo?
Kengo: I wasn't in the tank
Aru: But we saw you in it just before it was picked up
Kengo; Did you Aru, did you really?

*Aru gives a puzzled look to the camera*

*Kengo takes the opportunity to knee Aru in the face, throw a few punches, then throw him over the top of the bar*

*Kengo throws the barkeeper a small bag*

Kengo: Hope this covers the cost

Kengo (to camera): And now I'm going to do some mapping, so I have some work to show on this thread, so it doesn't get locked up.....

*Kengo walks out of the bar, which is largely on fire, and has various bits of battle droid scattered around*

Bartender: My bar...oh well, at least I have the money Kengo gave me to cover the cost.

(The bartender opens the bag and discovers it is full of 'Kengo rules' badges)

Bartender: I don't think I'm going to let these guys in here any more

*Aru staggers to his feet, and wanders to the window*

Aru: Oh dear....

*An X-wing dives out of the clouds, Wedge fires a series of missiles at the bar.....*

If it comes out. I can't believe you requested assets for a map that's only purpose was to have a WIP thread and make points for a glow on your name that you complained about taking ages to pick the color of. (Takes a deep breath) The thread fight was quite entertaining though, so you redeemed yourself in my eyes. lol

On another topic. Hey AKPiggot, can I beta test too? Kengo and I have both spent the last few days trying to help you fix Party Crasher. I would donate for the privilege, but I haven't spent my credits except for a hotel room(what a mistake that was) and still don't have many points. I'm saving for MY glow.

I just played th original Occupation. There is a problem similar to the skybox issue. The cutscene view of the town shows the plains of plain stone and an eternal drop into a skybox beyond the castle.

Other than the graphic problems of being in a town near the edge of the planet, it was good and the ground assault looks good, especially with the new skybox.

One question about thwe galtech building: is it supposed to be inside itself? I looked at the walls around the entrance in the opening cutscene and it looks like a enclosed area. Since you can't see the ceiling this looks like it could have been a bunch of walls with an open ceiling, justifying the rain.

Sarcasm is a concept you need to get to grips with!

The Galtech building at the beggining - the camera starts outside the building, hence the rain. This area is actually like a courtyard, which is why the ground is all kinda paved, but it is outside.

I do understand though. It is hard to detect sarcasm and to understand if someone got your sarcasm when you can't see or hear each other and have no idea of who people are or where they are so I justified that remark with a response.

Could it be any more obvious? Hazadous materials! I will have to make some custom signs at some point.

Question: What kind of font do the Remnant use? Can I just use Englsih signs or is that a no-no? It would make things a whole lot clearer if I could, but then if it ruins the atmosphere and realism, not worth it. I may be able to use symbols I guess.

http://massassi.net/ec/images/10348.jpg

The lighting needs some work but this I'm really proud of, my first ever curved corridor! Nearly killed me doing this...

At just over half way into the map (second level) you will be given the choice of two routes. One takes you across warehouses and a starport, the other, yet to be started, takes you across barracks, armoury and training grounds. The second route will probabaly be more hazardous but crammed full of weapons. Of course, if time becomes a problem, I'll just ditch the second route, but I don't plan to as yet, hopefully!

BTW, a lot of the lighting here is fairly temporary, I know in laces it's awful.

You can download the Aruk-Besh fonts from http://www.theforce.net/scifi3d/ under "Environment." Use those. As long as you put an appropriate graphic, it will be perfectly understandable.

Good start! Try putting some bevels and a simple patch mesh on the ground so that that inner walkway is continuous. (Might I recommend my patch mesh reference sheet? :))

Cool! Non-linear layout! AWESOME! i really hope that works, it would be so much more realistic than following a level that is "an Imperial base" but is essentailly a maze with one correct path.

I would advise against using English in a Star Wars maps, though that is just my personal preference. You might find most people aren't bothered. I always believed that English was never used in the films, although when watching ANH the other day I noticed that in the scene where Obi-Wan shuts down the tractor beam power, the closeup shot of the power display has English written on it. Apart from that though, I think Uraubesh [sp?] was used. I'm guessing it was a descicion made post-ANH.

If you don't have it already, you can download a similar font called Arekbesh (probably a copyright issue or something) here:

http://www.guerrestellari.net/bobafonts/select.html

The shots are looking pretty good, by the way. :)

Why would anyone accuse you of copying AKPiggot for a non-linear level design? Many people have talked about that. In the "suggestions for the next 'jedi' game" thread, it was discussed over many posts, mainly between StormHammer and I. Non-linear design is almost always good to have.

Kengo, about the door, it may be the angle of view, but the textures don't look even. The left is higher than the right.

Aru-Wen, I'm impressed, how did you get the candle light like that? .

Note to all viewers: Keep any weapons/battle stations of mass destruction away from Wedge2211. He tries to restore peace, but doesn't read the entire posts that don't have anything to do with the original topic and will destroy all if given the chance. lol

TRUE STORY
Once I had to get a new CPU because mine was completely destroyed by a virus. I never knew it was there because my stupid "Dr. Solomon's Find Virus" program, which came with my computer was "eaten from the inside-out" by the virus. The icon was their, but the program wasn't. I hadn't checked for viruses in a month. I realized the anti-virus software was destroyed, so I got e-trust anti-virus, from my sister's friend. I had 589 infections , wait a minute, that's horrible. I lost a CPU to that ****ing ***** of a virus .

What rumors of your death? Reminds me of the sarcastic remarks when I was extremely sick with folliculitus and out of school for two weeks.

No probs with the time really, there is a fair while to go for this level to get done thats for sure, long as it's done by the end really is all that maters, soon is great but don't feel the need to rush as there isn't one. When you say different sounding...I was hoping to have him as the same character if possible, doesn't have to be a perfect rendition tho, just close. If you aren't able to do this then OK I'm happy to go with a different voice, but similar is my preferance.

It's been awhile since that picture was posted, but here's a suggestion. For the ridges, use Gtkgensurf if you have it. It's a plugin that comes with gtk radiant. If you don't have it, search the forums for a download link. It basically makes a bunch of pointed brushes that give it a rough, terrain look to it. Nearly perfectly rounded mounds don't look as realistic as gensurf can make it look. Even if they are artificial, they wouldn't be perfectly round.

I have a picture of the wonders of gensurf in my showcase thread.

Hmmm, I need to work on the FPS a lot, thats to come.

I can't give you an idea of the size of the level, I'm doing it in pieces and then putting it together near the end, to save on compile times. It's gonna be...well, 4 levels, 2 cutscene levels two playable, first is the town from Occupation, second will be about the same size I guess....as for progress....my PC isn't down, I've just been involved in both another project (nothing to do with actually making a map...) of late, and Deus Ex....hey, I'm doing research into good SP :) I really need to get to work on the map some more, but when I do it will be a long time ill its screenshot worthy methinks - thanks for keeping the thread going :D

How's it going (your life, and the map)? This post serves the same purpose as the others in this thread. I enjoy salvaging posts that are not dead, but will be. I had an embarrasment with my first post and I don't want to talk about it.

Sematriclen, I've done something like that, and it's not too difficult (but frustrating for the first try).

Sniper towers would be nice, but remember. The player is not a jedi. He/she can't dodge sniper shots and they would be very hard to survive (for some, I'd just fire rockets at, snipe, etc.

The stormies in the towers could have merr-sonn portable missile systems. That would work out nicely.

Well thanks for the interest man. That *little project* I had going is now open to the world. However, you're not allowed to promote non lf sites on these forums apparently, however you are presumably allowed to have it's address in your signature, which is below, its a map review site basically. Obviously I'm gonna be reviewing there but I was kinda just thinking about the site, now its open I can dedicate some real time to the map again!

Sniper towers - nice idea indeed. Like you say rocket launchers might be better than sniper rifles, we'll see. There will be some outdoor bits so they may definately come into play.

I notice to my surprise that Legion has mentioned this map on a post about showcased projects here so if anyone is reading this who hasn't before - hi there! Some new screenshots soon :) And thanks a lot Legion, much appreciated :D

Well, its been a loooong time, but now to get this thread back on track. Whats been happening these last few weeks and months? Part way through this project I got involved with JK2Review, and so thats slowed things down some. Recently I've been making a huge amount of progress with this again and there are going to be a lot of new screenshots in the coming days.

First a recap of the now totally formalised structure.

There are 6 maps, which follow the route below:

____________________________O2Route 1
___________________________ / \
O2Landing - O2Town - O2Security ________O2HQ
___________________________ \ /
____________________________O2Route2

Now O2landing is a map purely for (5 minute long ) cutscene purposes (shots up above in this thread, little has changed here except Leslie Judges work on the skybox). O2Town is a jazzed up version of the town from Occupation, with a completely new set of events. At the end of O2 Security you get to pick where to go next, route 1 or route 2. Route 1 is through storage areas then a starport, Route 2 goes across barracks and an armoury. Your chances of success will vary depending on your choice of route. I may make the two routes mearly varying in gameplay but fairly even, or I may make one far harder. Both routes lead back to the HQ, the final chapter in the map.

The architecture I'm glad to say is about 90 - 95% done. I just need to optimise it for most of the areas. Then we have NPC placement proper, items and then scripting and cutscenes. All round, I'm maybe 70-75% done.

OK, below some early screenshots from Route2:

I will have some shots of the re-jigged town from Occupation up hopefully tonight, as well as working on the lighting of the other maps. I've basically tried to make the external architecture a little more interesting in the town without changing the overal layout.

Lighting in all the maps needs some work, and there are a fair few errors and scale issues to work on, still I hope to have the archi pretty much done within the next few days...bout 5 extra shots at JK2Review.com so far

At the moment I'm working on the scripting a collecting all the voice acting together. This doesn't really give me a great deal to show in showcasing, so I thought to keep things going I'd post up some more info on the characters. Character Bios will be included with the download, I will post up say one of them here every other day to keep things going. I will post a few extra ones only on the forums at jk2review.com

So, first up the central character you play, Lieutenant A Marshall

Lt. A Marshall
Republic Assault Commando Lieutenant, First Landing Team 7
Race: Human
Home Planet: Chandrila

Born on the quiet, peaceful world of Chandrilla, also home to Mon Mothma. He was a keen student, showing a particular interest in history and literature. His tranquil existence was ended with the Imperial occupation of his idyllic home world, which had opposed the Empire despite a lack of weaponry for defense. His favorite teacher and mentor was killed by Imperials and this drove him to join the Rebellion at a very young age. A rogue force user helped in his assassination, and since that day Marshall has had distrust for Jedi. He served the Rebellion initially as a scout, soon becoming a fully fledged agent. By the end of the war he was already a decorated agent, and despite his relative youth, was offered the rank of Lieutenant in the Assault Corps. Marshall no longer has the burning hate for the Imperials that Drynalt suffers from, but he believes they must be fully disbanded before the Universe can rest easy and he can return home. Since joining the Rebellion he has only returned home once, immediately after the end of the war, though he keeps in regular correspondence with his family on the planet. He is rather private about his past, infact; no one else in the Squad knows his first name, although Reton has a betting ring going on the subject. His fellow team members were initially a little skeptical that such a young Lieutenant would be fully capable of leading the team, but Marshall has won them over with a combination of bravery and tactical skill. He is not the most personable of people, but he has the full commitment of the rest of the team.

What are you using to build / compile this map?

I agree, architecture needs some extra detailing. I'm using JK2Radiant, yeh yeh I know, everyone hates it...I might possibly move over to GTK for the next map, but I think I'm too far down the road with this one to bother. I'm only doing these on Fast Vis atm, I thought as the lighting still needs a lot of work and the skybox is temporary, I'd just speed things up with that.

Thanks for the info Wedge, I'll give it my best shot then.

Bah...I switched mid-map (CotA) and it went fine, the UI is identical. Plus much better compiler. Plus it doesn't die at random times.

No I'm not, I'm considering it a possiblity for some time long into the future, maybe.

Did about 3 hours of scripting last night, slowly getting towards the end. I am half way through the biggest cutscene in the map, then I have a few more bits of scripting on the two alternate routes, then some end scripting, then I can get back to testing the level, and some more screenshots. Trying to collect all the voice acting in too now. This is definately going to be my last big proejct that I attempt all at once, on my own, EVER.

OK, another character Bio which I'm sure are already becoming the hightlight of your day...

Bail Chevolt
Republic Assault Commando Engineer, First Landing Team 7
Race: Human
Home Planet: Coruscant
Growing up on Coruscant during the Imperial years, Bail learnt an extreme disrespect for authority. His friends and he kept a quietly opposing view to the Empire, but managed to avoid a direct conflict with them which would have meant death for them and their families. Fortunately for him, Coruscant was liberated from Imperial hands shortly before he would have been of the age to be shipped out to one of the Cadet Academies. If he had reached this age, he had a pact with his best friend Wes to run away from home and go into the lower levels to hide. As it was, Bail studied as an engineer, showing good technical skills. He never lost the feeling of loathing for the Imperials, and joined up as a Republic Cadet. A shortage of Cadets with engineering skills lead to speedy promotion to the Assault Corps, though he is still pretty green in combat terms. He still finds it hard to believe there is more to the Universe than Coruscant, and he tends to be rather arrogant and ignorant, but his adolescent manner hides a much more resolute character.

Not likely man, we're talking years till my project is finished...I guess I can do a few more hours of scripting today, maybe it will make a dent.

I was thinking of doing some character bios for some of the baddies yes :)

And now, part 3 of my character Bios segement, which Lassev has described as "excellent" and "truely wonderful".

Marek Aldranicus
Republic Assault Commando, First Landing Team 7
Race: Trandoshan
Home Planet: Trandosha
A fearsome figure who has faced a great deal of mistrust. A merchant trader like his father, intolerance towards his race led him to be defensive and wary of others. Whilst trading he was offered several Wookie slaves by another Trandoshan trader, who said they were worth a great deal to the Empire. Incensed, Marek wounded the trader and freed the Wookies. They led him to the Rebellion, whom he served as an information gatherer and weapons and equipment supplier in the Outer Rim until the end of the Galactic Civil War. He was very successful, after all, who would suspect a Trandoshan was working for anyone but themselves? The irony of preconception working for him instead of against him was not lost on Marek. He intended to go back to Trading, though not with great relish, when the war ended. He quickly accepted the offer of a military posting in the Republic Assault Corps when it was offered to him. The rest of the team trust in his calm judgment and steely nerves, his bravery in the face of any odds and his amazing strength and hardiness.

Thats right, a Trandoshan is in your squad :)

Err...yeh. Many of them hold degrees in being bad guys, and one or two have post-grads in things like 'evil laughter' and 'giving away their secret plans'. A few even have suspicious moustaches and metal claws for hands and stuff. One of the bad guys actually lectures at Bad Guy Tech, PA.

Actually, the main guy is behind a desk and not seen, and the Imperial subcommander makes a few brief appearances. The real confrontations are going to be left till part 3, which is unfortunate as it may never get completed!

A lot more scripting has been done, almost all the cutscenes are done to a first build, improvements will be needed for some later I'm sure. Next on the to do list are editing the voice files I do have, getting the custom objectives done, getting the subtitles for the cutscenes done, then a lot of NPC placement (most of the levels have only very basic placement). This will be followed by looking at adding in a few new NPCs (Imperial Commando anyone? :)), altering the weapons some (DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol anyone? :D). Then I should be ready to begin some early stages of testing for this baby, I know a lot of optomisation is going to be required. So all in all, beta testing within 2 weeks perhaps.

Carlist Drynalt
Republic Assault Commando, First Landing Team 7
Race: Human
Home Planet: Alderaan

Carlist was a young child when Alderaan was destroyed; his grandparents had taken him on a trip off-World when the planet was fatefully obliterated by the Death Star. He was raised in hiding by his Grandparents on Ord Mantell. As soon as he was old enough he joined the Republic Army. There he showed extreme bravery and determination, but doubts were always present about his self control, his nickname as a Cadet was ‘Angry’. He joined the Assault Corps, wanting to be on the front line of the war against the Remnant. He has already won several medals for bravery and quickly became eligible for service in one of the elite First Landing teams. Doubts about his ability to control his hate for the Remnant are still present, the line between heroism and revenge on his part isn’t clear.

Yes, I almost agree with Thomas. Angry is not nearly as nice a name as Wrath would be.

"Hey, Wrath, it's really disgusting how your mouth starts foaming every time you see Imperials!"
"Aye, and his eyes turn all red!"
"A wookie would run away from him, afraid of getting rabies."

The custom objectives are now done. Does anyone know of a really good translator program so I can get the objectives and subtitles into French and German? To continue the background info, here is some on the RN-115, the new weapon the Republic troops will be using in this mission.

RN-115 Assault Blaster Rifle
The result of a New Republic funded joint project between New Republic military officials and an unknown Armament Corporation. The project was intended to create a powerful assault weapon for elite New Republic units. Based upon similar lines to the destructive DC-15 Blaster Rifle used by Clonetroopers during the clone war, using a similar plasma technology, the RN-115 has recently left the prototype stages and a few have been produced and distributed to select Republic troops. The weapon is lighter than the DC-15, and has an increased clip size. Although the standard fire doesn’t pack the same punch as the DC-15, a secondary fire concussion explosion round much like those fired by an Imperial Heavy Repeater is very effective at close range.

More info on this to come. Just working on modding the SP content some more, the guns, sounds etc.

Wow Leslie, I didn't know you spoke German, your talents appear near limitless :D That would be a massive help man, and I don't think helping with the subtitles would be contravening reviewing rules. Maybe the easiest thing to do would be I finish the subtitles (I'm about 2/3 of the way through today), then send them to you and you translate whatever parts you were able in the same files, save me some time putting them in later :)

master_thomas

You know, if you put weapons briefings in the final release somehow, don't include the part about the repeater. The RN is great, but you wouldn't want to tell the players with no knowledge of editing that you really just modified the shots a bit. If they think you created it from scratch, (modify it enough and give it no relation to the repeater) they'll enjoy the experience more.

I dont know if this is already a plan of yours (since i ran out of reading-power [yes, that's a word... from now on] when i got halfway through page 3...

But for a more team-immersed fealing of the level, maybe you should make some scripted sequences (not cutscenes, as they give a fealing of being taken away from the action), for instance one where there's like a hallway, or something like that (maybe an open area with some cannons) and you cant get past that due to a cannon or such, and then two or three members of the team (assumming they're still alive, else there would have to be an alternative) volunteer to go out and give you cover fire (like on Omaha Beach in MOH when you reach the sniper house)

It's just an idea (a general concept, for you to build more onto), but i think such stuff would add to a teamplay feeling!

Kengo
06-09-2003, 10:49 PM
Good ideas there Tito. I've tried to include some scipted bits (particulary at that start) which give you a feeling of squad combat. Later on I've tried to split the squad up into smaller parts because fighting with like 6 NPCs is a bit of a pain to design for. I'd have liked to have done more character traits, like making certain caracters excel in certain areas - I can do this a little but not much as they all need to be good in the squad to be much use.

So, update: The work on this project certainly hasn't slowed down, I've spent hours and hours of late working on getting the scripting good enough for a closed Beta Test, which I hope can start tommorow, but we'll have to see...

So, another character Bio. I hear Wedge has been having withdrawal symptons since I stoped posting these.

Harido Yulnari
Republic Assault Commando, First Landing Team 7
Race: Rodian
Home Planet: Rodia
Although a skilled hunter, his main interest lay in exploration. His travels led him to despise the Empire, and eventually he carried out a series of attacks against them. After the fall of the Empire he planned to go back to his exploration, but much to his surprise he was offered a military role as an Assault Commando by the Republic. He was more surprised to find himself accepting. A crack shot, swift and agile, he is at home in most environments and is a vital, if quiet part of the team. Despite his lonesome nature, has become a friend with Aldranicus, who also belongs to a largely mistrusted race and faces a great deal of prejudice.

The map is now in beta testing, I have enough testers already. There are definately a lot of things to be sorted out, it is likely to be a fairly long beta phase, although I don't expect I'll need a second beta phase I may just change my mind on that later on. I should have a few action shots from various parts of the map tommorow. I have the DL-44 Blaster Pistol into the game now, and kind permission from the author to use it. :)

One of my favourite characters for the squad...

Cp. Tal Reton
Republic Assault Commando Corporal, First Landing Team 7
Race: Human
Home Planet: Corellia

Tal originally planed on being an architect, but the Galactic Civil War led him to join the Rebellion. After the war, he was encouraged to join the Republic Commando Corps, being given the rank of Corporal. His relaxed attitude and fondness of speaking his mind wouldn’t go down well with higher ranking officers in some other units, but Reton and Deltak share in a conspiratorial Corellians are always right pact.

Yeah, I can tell this level contains a lot of action. And you must also be careful, because the imperials just don't leave crates and barrels of ammo lying aroung in these maps. It suit me, because it encourages the slow playing style I always cherish.

I especially liked those extraordinary (Matrix inspired?) columns in that one big room.

I've added some more ammo and health to make it a little less impossible, but I still want it to be a challenge - its worthwhile to creep around a bit. Yeh, those columns were Matrix inspired, its an old trick I used in Prison Escape, always worth re-using old material I say :)

Well, after some more work and testing last night, I'm basically declaring the mapping and scripting done! All that remain now are getting all the subtitles working, and some outside resources, and the documentation. Does anyone have any ideas why sometimes subtitles in palces don't work. Frankly, I'm glad to have reached this point where I can now take a more lesuirely apporach to the project until its done, because yesterday my right eye was twitching all day...and now I seem to have RSI on my clicking finger on the right hand :D

Hey is there any place where we can download the DL-44? I always wanted to use the weapon and i seen model shots of one in progress about a year ago but it looks like the guy never completed it.

Thanks a lot man, I appreciate it :) You can get the beautiful DL-44 model with the equally wonderful Han Solo skin at http://www.jk2files.com/file.info?ID=7779 Both the skin and model are by the scarily talented Major Clod, and the weapon even comes with customised sounds which just make you want to use it :D

From news gathered everywhere, I think we are going to get the final product next week, aren't we? Considering the number of third party components, it's a good achievement to integrate it all together to a working packet. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the faces of the biographied fellows and hearing their voices. The cinematics should prove interesting now that everything is at it's proper place.

And also I'm looking forward to playing the game without my bullets running out and crying desperately for even one little bacta. Man, it was hard...

Sorry to say I found out earlier today due to outside resources it will be delayed maybe a week or so, possibly a bit more depending. However, never fear, I'm gonna get some screenshots up later, and I now have the documentation pretty much done, the subtitles should be fixed (thanks to Leslie) and I have of course added some SERIOUS ammo :D Gonna work on the levelshots later too, and just throwing in as many extras as I can.

I've added a lightsaber as an extra special Easter Egg for all those beta tester who said they missed having it around :) It's so obscure though, you should only find it after you see its location revealed at the end of the end credits...

I am on vacation this week and unfortunately I didn't get my part finished before I left like I had hoped. But as soon as I get back next week I'll finish things up. It shouldn't take long at all (a few days at most).

So direct your flames and blame at me for delaying this awesome project. Sorry :(

Hey Prime, worry ye not, your great work on these skins is very much appreciated and I am happy to wait while you take a well earned break, it just gives me the opportunity to polish things some :D I know you aren't the type to rush something just to get it done if it isn't going to be as good as you want, and I respect that as well. It's actually pretty well timed for me anyway, I have a few things coming up that would have slowed the project down anyway.

An older shot with temporary skybox, just to show some architectural stuff

I'm trying to show some good stuff without giving everything away...

Been working on the documentation a lot, yet another character bio:

Micheal Jameson
Head of Galtech Industries
Race: Human
Home Planet: Corellia
Voice Actor: (In Occupation) Erik "Muurn" Moon

Galtech's founder Micheal Jameson is well known for going against the established system and it was a typical act for him to base his company on a planet not in the busiest parts of the Hub but somewhere between the Hub and the Rim of the Republic. A Corellian with a strong independant streak, he often visits his beloved homeworld. Details of his activities in the Galactic Civil war, and in the years preceeding it are hazy at best, certainly he did not set up Galtech until shortly after the Galatic Civil War ended. There are many rumours about his past, none have much proof behind them. Kyle doesn't trust him, along with several important New Republic figures. Also disliked by much of the Corperate sector in general, he appears to be low on friends.

Nice screenshots. Quite finely elaborate the fact that many of your enemies in this campaign are not of the usual stock. It would be nice of you to show the faces of the biographied fellows, if you don't think it would spoil too much.

However, you could still, now that Prime gave you an excuse, do some juicy texture alignment. For example, if you look at your second figure, you see that the texture on the wall with the lamp does not end near the ceiling, as does the same texture on the wall with the doorway or in the corridor.

And if I may suggest further, it wouldn't hurt to add a couple'o'windows to your town. In fact, now that I think of it, it might be a good advice to me likewise. Maybe I should spend an hour or two to add some windows to the beautiful archipelago surrounding Lighthouse. Oh, thanks for giving me this idea!

Thanks for the offer El, however I've already submitted it to PCGM in pieces (4), just in order to save time. So when you return, or when the death threats reach Rgoer, it will all be there ready :)

Thanks for the interest guys, I am just enjoying the fact I don't really have to worry about it anymore, and the fact it will get posted. I'll get some screenshots of the finished version up soon, played it through again with someone today and they enjoyed it, and it didn't crash once, always a good sign :D

Ooh, the hype. As soon as I get a new video card and reinstall JO, I'm gonna download this. (computer crashed and I have only 16 colors. Bleh) I enjoyed the first Occupation level, and now I can't wait for this one! The screenshots looked amazing even with only 16 colors. Good job!

Oh yeah. I'm looking forward to dying again for the lack of ammo and health. It was so frustrating the first time. Man, it was hard!

Congratulations! The skins look amazings, and no doubt the sounds are very suitable to the characters. With all the enhancements you have done, this is no doubt the best custom level that offers action without a saber. It was far more fun to play without the lightsaber your levels than the first Raven SP levels, for some reason.

I've played the first three levels or so, and I must say that this is GREAT! Seldom have I downloaded a mod that was so challenging. (notice I said "challenging," not "screaming, hair-pulling impossible") The secret room's a gas! I've just taken the barracks route; I'll try the spaceport way the second time around. Kudos to a job well done!

well, i played it. I give it a 9.8. Only a few things wrong, sometimes in cinematics the speech wouldn't match up with the subtitles. The subtitle would be 'we're heading in' and they'd say 'we're going in', things like that. I also see you left plenty of room for occupation 3. So, all I can say is.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE T!

Yeah, I can see how that would ruin someone's enjoyment of the game.

Things like that happen. It happened in the regular SP version of JO as well.

Just telling him why I didn't think it was perfect.

But of course, nothing is perfect. 9.8 is pretty dang close tho.

Amen to that man :) Big thanks to Eldritch and Sergio of course for Occupation 2 being up at PCGM 2.0. I'm now back from hols and will send it around to as man other sites I can think of. In response - Never, glad you liked it :) It seems to have been termed 'dfficult' or 'challenging' by most people who have played it, which is a big imporvement from the 'barely possible using God mode' settings from the beta....eh Lassev ;)?

Dev, glad you liked it as well - those errors are in the end, down to me running out of steam at the end a little, plus of course my famous lack of attention to mistkaes!

(that one was deliberate!)

Feedback very much welcome :)

Oh, yes. The difficulty was just perfect here. Sometimes I found myself cursing the lack of ammo and health, but then at the last possible moment I got some more, and the killing game went on. That's how it's supposed to be. To spend all the ammo of all the weapons, and then suddenly get some more. Then spend them all... And so on. I remember running back long corridors to get the one last health pack I left behind just in case...

My thoughts exactly. Although I waste ammo like a 2-mile to the gallon car, so after O2Town I barely ever used my RN-115 up until HQ when there were all those flechette-troops.

Can't tell you enough how good this is. Everyone I know that plays JK2 on PC, I've told them to get this.:)
