Finally, another Hufflepuff :)

Hufflepuff is one of the Hogwarts school houses. I might as well give you the whole story. About 1000 years ago (the certain date is unknown) the four greatest sorcerers of the time, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, founded the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. And each of them would pick out the ones they favoured to their school houses. Gryffindor favoured the bravest, the nerve and daring. Hufflepuff prefered those just and loyal, and unafraid of toil. Ravenclaw favoured those of wit and learning, and Slytherin loved those of great ambition (the power-hungry, you might say). But since they would not be able to pick the students after they have died, they enchanted a sorting hat to sort the students into their houses.

Now, there's not anything wrong with Hufflepuffs in general, but they got a reputation of being a bunch of duffers. I quote Draco Malfoy: "Well, no one really knows until they get there, do they, but I know I'll be in Slytherin, all our family have been - imagine being in Hufflepuff, I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?"

For all of you that saw the movie but didn't read the book, here's the Sorting Hat's song (yes, it sings) from Harry's first year :

"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

The song actually changes from year to year, but there have only been 2 Sorting Hat songs in the books, because in Harry's second and third years he missed the sorting ceremony.
There seems to be more Gryffindors then anything else here - I wonder what the count is for each house?

Clemme, the movies are good (acting by the kids is a little strange sometimes but overall pretty good), but the books are GREAT.

They're really quite easy to read - just read the first one and you'll see how entertaining they are.

Breton
02-19-2003, 10:14 AM
Pffft. No one beats Cedric Diggory anyway (he was a Huffepuff). Tall, handsome, a great wizard, a great seeker (the only one who has ever beaten Harry in a Quidditch match), friendly, fair, and the one who won the Triwizard Tournament (ok, he tied with Harry, but Harry had great help from Moody/Crouch and Bagman. Even though Harry never meant to be helped by them, it is still unfair, as Moody was a teacher and Bagman was one of the judges)

I've started to like Hufflepuff ;)

Edit:

Dunno, you could be a fan of the movies, just like I am! I dont wanna read the books, so I just watch the movies, and theyre quite nicely done !

I'll agree with Aru-Wen on this one, if you liked the movies at all, you'll love the books.

Eldritch
02-19-2003, 10:19 AM
Pfft. Diggory only won at Quidditch because Harry had other stuff on his mind.

And they tied the Triwizard Tournament because Harry passed on whatever inside information he got from Moody (who shouldn't count as a professor) to Cedric, so I say that makes them even.

And if Cedric hadn't felt so bad about accepting so much help from Harry, he would've gotten the trophy himself, stayed alive, and kept Voldemort from returning to power (at least temporarily).

Wes,

Here's a partial list of spells. Be sure NEVER to use Avada Kedavra, Crutacius, or Imperius - these are the "Unforgiveable Curses" and the use of any of them will land you in Azkaban Prison, where you will be tormented by Dementors until your death. Also, you shouldn't use Morsmordre, as the Dark Mark that it summons is the sign of Voldemort (and unless you're one powerful Death Eater, it's best not to use it).

Accio (summoning charm) - Latin for "to summon."

Avada Kedavra (killing curse) - Arameic phrase that means "may it be destroyed." Also, "ABRA KADABRA!" Sounds like it...

Avis (spell that Ollivander used to make birds fly out of Krum's wand) - Latin for "bird."

Cunjunctivitus Curse (spell that Krum used to "do something" to the eyes of the Chinese Fireball during the first task of the TWT) - Conjunctivitis is the scientific name for pink-eye -- the illness that children often get that makes eyelids crust together.

Crutacius Curse - "Cruciato" is Latin for "to torture."

Deletrius (banishing spell) - Latin for "to erase."

Densuageo (spell that Malfoy used to make Hermione's front teeth grow huge) - "Dens" is Latin for "teeth." "Augeo" is Latin for "to enlarge."

Diffindo (spell Harry used to cause Cedric's bag to split apart) - In Latin, "Diffundo" means "scatter."

Ennervate (used to revive someone who has been stunned) - Strangely, in Latin it means "weaken or destory" which is the opposite of the spell's effect.

Expelliarmus (disarming spell) - Latin combination "to expel" and "arma" (weapon).

Impedimenta (used to slow down attackers) - "Impedio" is Latin for "to hinder."

Imperius Curse - "Impero" is Latin for "to control" and "imperium" is Latin for "absolute control."

Lumos (used to make light emit from a wand) - "Lumen" is Latin for "light" and "luminous" means "emitting light" in English.

Morsmordre (makes the Dark Mark appear in the sky) - Combination between "mors" (Latin for "death") and "modere" (Latin for "to bite".) Death bite? No -- Death Eater.

Nox (cancels out Lumos) - Nox was the Greek Goddess of Darkness/Night. Nox is also Latin for "darkness".

Orchideous (makes flowers spring out of the tip of a wand) - "Orchid" means "flower."

Og - In Aragorna Finnigan's book, Rainbow, a character named Og is a leprechaun-turned-mortal.

Expecto Patronum (dementor defense spell) - "Patronus" is Latin for "protector."

Priori Incantatem (Prior Incantation Emitter) - this is latin. "priori" meaning "before" or "prior" and incantatem for spells or incantations. so it could mean something along the lines of "spells having been cast before" or "prior spells" etc.

Quietus (cancels out "Sonorus") - Obviously "quiet" means to be silent, but "quietus" in Latin means "death." Strange...

Reducio (shrinking charm) - "Reduce" means "to make smaller" in English.

Riddikulus (spell used to transform a scary Boggart in to a humorous shape) - "Ridiculous" means "absurd."

Sonorous (spell used to magnify a voice like a loudspeaker) - "Sono" is Latin for "to make a sound."

Stupefy (spell used to make someone unconscious) - "Stupefy" in English means "dull the senses of; daze."

Wes, Furnunculus is a curse that causes boils, lol - It can't split a chair. You'd want to use something like Diffindo (spell to make something split) or Reducto (blasts apart a solid object). I'll have to give you the full list and what they do (and how to use them). :D

*while Wes casts the incorrect spell, Aru uses that time to cast*

Bah. Gryffindor reigns supreme! BTW, I'm thinking of making a little Gryffindor 'badge' to go with my signature - anyone who has a image sig and wants a badge of their house to wear can ask me.

BTW, Wes - I donated 359 points to you, so you should have exactly 900... enough to get your sig image. :)

Yeah - aren't you looking at my sig?

Buying a signature image only gives you the ability to place the [*img] tag in your signature. It's not something you have to set up at the store - you can change it as frequently as you change your sig.

In User CP, just go into Edit Profile and set it all up in your sig.

This is the size of an avatar and is 4kb - I doubt he'll complain, but if he does, I'll remove it.

The only reason he made it an issue was because he didn't want people linking multiple images in their sig - makes it hard on the 56Ker's.

ok y'all... it is I, SPY.

until now, the swampys knew not of my silent obssesion with these books...

until, now,.

yes, thats right, I will now be talking in this thread about anything HP related.

I am also attempting to decide if I should edit this thread, and make it general Harry Potter discustion, as the house poll, good as topic as ever, isn't as lasting as general chit-chat...

what do you think, fellow members?

oh, also, i've run the test before, and its Gryffindor for me... Woo! :D

A few seconds, eh? If I was counting, I'd have to adjust... there. :o

A topic? How about this for a topic... why do you think Voldemorte killed James and Lily Potter (Harry's Parents)? And what really happened when Voldemorte tried to kill Harry?

SPY_jmr1
02-25-2003, 04:23 PM
well, a couple of things.

Voldemort is actually french, and has a silent T... tricky little ess ohh bee to say.

good as topic as any.

WHY? we dont know why, but we'll be finding out.

we DO know thatonly James and Harry were targeted, and Lily was only killed because she would not yield to Voldemort. which is a even TRICKIER question of "WHY" then the total attack.

as to what happened, we know WHAT happened, but not WHY... i'm hoping this gets nailed down in the next book more tightly.

responce?

Eldritch
02-25-2003, 04:32 PM
Voldemort isn't really french - it is, after all, only an anagram of his real name, Tom Marvolo Riddle.

It's pronounced with that french silent 't' though : VOLE-de-more.

As for the reason why only Harry and James were targeted - well, I think they're probably the heir of Godric Gryffindor. Lily isn't of the same bloodline, and as such, posed no threat. Voldemort said after all that he would've let Lily go.

Probably going to nail it down in Book 5.

J.K. Rowling said in Book 5, one of Harry's "fans" will die. She also said that the death will be horrible to write (this seems obvious). Anyone have any guesses who it could be?

Well, my guess is certainly Colin Creevey. I think Voldermort is going to send someone to kill Harry, but then Creevey saves Harry's life by protecting him with his body, and thereby he gets his moment of glory. But it's just guesswork, of course.

Eldritch
02-28-2003, 09:02 PM
Could be. I just ordered this book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0972393617/mugglenet/102-2704828-3372167) from Amazon.com - once it gets here I might have a couple new opinions on it, but right now it doesn't seem like Colin Creevy would be the "most horrible" death to write, although he is one of Harry's biggest fans.

Breton
03-01-2003, 06:34 AM
But you only have 3 choices, right?
Colin Creevey, Dennis Creevey and Ginny Weasley
And of those three, I belive Colin is the most likely.

Eldritch
03-01-2003, 09:45 PM
I don't know, I would also consider Hagrid and to a lesser extent, Dumbledore to be fans of Harry.

I think both of those would be harder to write, and Rawling has a habit of pulling the rug out from under us, but we'll know for sure in 112 days. :D

It kind of does, Wes. Your wand's wood and core substance helps in determining what type of magic its best at (charms, hexes, transfiguration, etc). The only place i've found to see what type of wand I would have is here (http://www.harrypotter.com). Register and then go get your wand at Ollivanders to see what you'd have.
