Well, there's an XBox Gaming thread, so I thought I'd post a PC Gaming thread, since PCs are the best gaming system.

To start things off, I just got Splinter Cell for PC today...

Splinter Cell looks soo great!!!! But I don't plan on getting it soon due to the fact I just got C&C Generals!!!!!

C&C Generals is an awesome game!!! by far the best C&C Game ever. Its graphics are must like the graphics in AOM, if not better. Its tanks are well modeled though the infantry still lack proper modeling. Nevertheless, the game is sooooo fun!!! My favorite side to play as, is America. I love there Paladin Tanks and there Particle Cannon. This game is a must for RTS lovers (like me:D)!!!!

Hey Jedi220, does Splinter Cell have a MP?

Jed

Splinter Cell does NOT have MP.

It's still a great game though, I've only got through the first few levels but it's great fun.

Ok, this is something different then your normal action pc game. I'm looking at getting a flight simulator......like a commercial jet one. Question one - are they really any good? Two - are they worth the money? Three - suggestions for which one(s) I should check out?

C&C Generals just doesn't feel like C&C anymore. I've played quite a bit of the China and USA missions, and they have to be some of the most uninvolving stuff I've ever encountered. Gone are the cool briefings and the cheesy cutscenes. Those things are part of what made C&C so cool. I just don't feel any real motivation to continue playing when all I get after a mission is a 20 second voice briefing telling me there's another thing I have to destroy, while I look at an ugly loading screen. Woo.

Skirmish and LAN games are very fun though, but I still feel it lacks something. So I guess I'm pretty disappointed overall.

Commercial flight sims? Only one I've played is MS Flight Simulator 2002. After I failed to loop under the Golden Gate bridge with a 747, I gave up. It's not very fun, unless you have a special interest in planes. Good graphics though, and very comprehensive.

No problem. Try waiting for a demo or something, just to try it out. You might like it, even though I was disappointed.

I will not get Splinter Cell for PC yet...what I'm told is that it is composed of 9 missions taking between 1 to 1 and a half hours each. Thats too short for $50 for me. I'll pick it up when the price drops and the finish patching it, though.

I just picked up Summoner for $7.99. Weee. I'm bored on my PC for the moment though because the only game I want right now is Splinter Cell and considering the length of time it takes me the raise the money for it and the length of time it will take me to finish, I can't afford it. So I got Summoner: A Goddess Reborn for the Gamecube and am playing through both. I just wanna play Battlefield 1942 again but the 1.3 patch screwed it all up, I'm waiting for the patch for the patch. It should have been released a while ago but(Even though nothing has been annouced) my bet is they have most of the team working on a second expansion pack(The expansion pack is in a folder titled "XPack 1", and I think the last expansion sold well), despite the fact that its not finished patching...greedy EA.

Post about any cool upcoming mods your excited about.

Star Wars Battlefield(at www.swbattlefield.com ...and its not called that anymore due to legal reasons, but I forget the new name) is one I'm excited about. Take the gameplay of Battlefield 1942 and make it Star Wars. And because of Battlefield vehicle centric gameplay and thereforce vehicle friendly engine, you'll be able to use everything from X-Wings to AT-ATs. How can you not like stepping on foot soldiers with AT-ATs?

They're also making a Halo mod for BF 1942. If they don't get sued that will be cool.

swatteam, do you know the details for that Freelancer game? I was interested in getting it, but didn't know what it was about...

Splinter Cell does seem to be a short game, I hope I'm not almost done with it =\

And Medal of Honor: Allied Assault seems to be a fun game...I played a bit of it today.

here is a short preview 4 u

Sneak a peek at this great space epic

The beta version has finally arrived, which means that the retail version is lurking in the horizon.

It has been four agonizing years of waiting since the announcement of its release in 1999. Iím talking about the game, Freelancer. As a hardcore fan of famed Commander designer Chris Roberts, I can remember the days when droves of fans would just lap up every Wing Commander game that developer Origin had to offer. Almost everyone was fascinated by the epic saga as the story slowly unfolded during gameplay.

Freelancer is the sequel to Microsoft's StarLancer, which was designed by Erin Roberts, Chris' younger brother, who was also the creator of Privateer 2: The Darkening. Although StarLancer and Freelancer both share the same universe setting, these two games have little in common. Unlike its predecessor, Freelancer veers a little from the official storyline. It is like a mini version of Earth and Beyond, a Massively Multiplayer Online game released not too long ago.

Be a space explorer or pirate

In the game, I can choose to be a trader plying the space routes or just simply exploring the vastness of space. And if I am in a devilish mood, I can always become a space pirate, attacking and looting space ships. But I prefer to start the game following the storyline and leave the exploring to later.

Setting my PC to maximum performance, I sat engrossed by the grand opening scenes of the game. Microsoft has clearly put in much effort to create a good and lasting first impression. Like every epic space saga and drama, the game begins with a preamble that tells the player that it is now 800 years since the events of StarLancer took place.

During that time, wars have raged between the two most powerful houses in the galaxy: the Coalition and the Alliance. Fearing defeat, the Alliance launched five "sleeper" ships--each representing a major Alliance faction--to travel to the ends of the universe in order to escape the wrath of the Coalition and start their civilizations anew. Now, 800 years later, the five factions of the Alliance have settled on numerous star systems, and their cultures and industries have prospered.

The game uses its in-game graphics engine to weave its story right after the fantastic pre-rendered graphics laden opening sequence. In movie-style camera sequencing, I slipped into the role of Trent Edison, who, at the start of the game, finds himself the lone survivor on an interstellar outpost called Freeport Station, which was rocked by a mysterious explosion that claimed the lives of almost all its inhabitants.

I began the game without much knowledge of my character but as I read the logs of the game, I began to realize that Trent is a trader whose job description borders on smuggling.

The story progresses with Trent taking it upon himself to investigate the reason behind Freeport Station's destruction, and he'll come to discover that this mystery runs much deeper than he thought.

Stiff characters but detailed graphics

The start of the story is pretty linear. The 3-D cut-scenes get me to the location and allow me to interact with the various people I need to talk to. I have to say that the characters in the cut scenes are quite stiff. Perhaps my standards and expectations have been raised by the life-like possibilities of 3-D characters such as those employed in No One Lives Forever 2. Actual transactions and interactions within the game, however, are done on a 2-D interface.

Graphically, Freelancer is superb. The ship models are highly detailed and lighting and weapon fire effects are colourful. I can arm my ship with a variety of lasers, missiles, mines and other weapons as long as I have the cash. With other space farers who are also just as keen to blow up stuff in space, defenses like shields and countermeasures can also be conveniently installed.
Jumping between planets inside a system is handled through trade lanes while travel between systems is through enormous star gates. The systems are terribly cluttered with dust, asteroid belts and even space ship debris. Every now and then, the floating space rubbish would damage my poor ship.

Idiot-proof controls

Ship controls have been made easy with mouse and keyboard. I had the initial impression that it was certain death without any joystick support for any flight simulator but I was pleasantly surprised. Piloting and combat in the game can be easily learnt and handled without any dependence on the joystick.

Even though it's been in development longer than most other PC games, it seems that Freelancer is, once and for all, nearing completion. Publisher Microsoft expects to ship (stet) game next March, and Digital Anvil will use these remaining four months of development to remove the remaining bugs in the single-player campaign.

It will also put the finishing touches on the game's multiplayer component, which will be able to support up to 16 players at once and will let you save your character's progress for later use.

Eagerly anticipating its release

Freelancer is a game not to be missed; with its open-ended gameplay, high-powered space action, superb graphics, it will definitely be a hit with gamers. Players will also be able ply the space ways soon when Freelancer finally docks at your local retail game software store this year

I direct everyone to www.ign.com or www.gamespot.com when seeking information on games. IGN usually has more info.

Also, try taking the game name and typing it in the browser. If I want to know about Freelancer, for instance, I would type in www.freelancer.com, which has a nifty neural net(say that 10 times fast) database.

And of course the best part of Freelancer is that its made by Microsoft, and it's gonna be $10. I'd be looking forward to it anyway but the fact that I can afford it makes me even more excited:).

No, I meant its $10 for me...sorry....guess that was kinda rude of me. I just mean that Microsoft=me happy. I remember some people were upset about the rumors of Microsoft purchasing the Vivendi games division, but not me....now I'm ranting though.

And if you wanna view my wishlist its at http://users.ign.com/wishlist/Aerothorn . Note that the reasons Galaxies is low is not because it doesn't seem super cool, but A. Its super ambitious so I don't wanna get my hopes up, and B. Planetside comes out a month earlier, so I'll probably get that if it gets good reviews instead of waiting for a MMORPG I may or may not like.

omg.... *dies laughing*

ok ok, i'll tell you what it is...

you build a base, and frmo their you buy units with money that you earn by either gathering resources or trading stuff or building something to give you resources. then you can build defenses for your base, like turrets and walls, and you can build a bunch of different units, which you can control independently depending on the game, usually you can, and send them to attack and hopefully defeat the enemy! sometimes there'll be shroud which means you can only see what your units see, and sometimes you cans ee everything at once.

go to www.lucasarts.com/products and download galactic battlegrounds for an example of what an RTS is.

Ignore what Rouge said- that isn't the definition of RTS (Many RTS games don't have base building, for instance, like Homeworld). An RTS is a Real Time Strategy game- simply put, a strategy game that takes place in real time, as opposed to a turn based strategy game, where people take turns(like a board game).

Swat

first of all, my name is ROGUE, not some makeup bull****ter from the moons of hell, second I gave a much better explanation than you did. What is real-time? what's a strategy game? what do you do in a strategy game, other than strategize? give a ****ing example!

alright, i'll give another sortof an example..

There's a few different kinds of strategy games:

City, these are generally non-warefare kinds that let you micromanage resources and make a city grow, etc, basically you get to be the mayor, example: Sim City

Empire -kinda like city, but you also have the ability to buy military units

War (for lack of better term =/ ) -You're given units at the beginning of the mission, and have to use those units to accomplish a goal

there's many many kinds of rts'....which makes it hard to explain what they are like. But generally, you have to use your thinking skills to accomplish a mission, whether it be to have a certain amount of people in your city by a certain time, wiping out an enemy base, successfully defending your base from an attack, taking a group of units to infiltrate a base, etc. the good thing about strategy games is that they have alot of replayability, you can make maps for some of them, etc. Rebellion is a really good strategy game if you're into star wars and space.

Jed
02-23-2003, 12:40 AM
Well, Rogue15 is right, most RTS are like what he described. I haven't played one that isn't how he described either, so as far as I'm concerned he's right.

swatteam created a nice list of RTS games. * to swatteam*

I was also wondering how your new comp is and if you are giggling like a little school girl.

I was watching my friend play and it looks sweet. To bad that I don't like those kind of games.

I am just waiting to get my first paycheck and I am off to go buy Spinter Cell as soon as I can find it and then get Spearhead. I can finally afford new games :D

Any games that you guys may recomend for a FPS gamer like me?

All I know is that I don't like UT2K3 cause I hate those kind of shooters. I like ones that are more precise and that are realistic.

I was also wondering if any of you guys know if there are any Resident Evil games that are going to be coming out for PC cause I just had my first taste of Zero on GC and I loved it. But I don't want to go out and buy a platform that is going to be obsolete in 2 years. I think that I am over with platforms unless they make a real good one and that wont be replaced anytime soon.

Seeing as how this is a PC Gaming thread, I wonder if you guys have played (the demo of) Freelancer? I downloaded the demo a few days ago, and I love it. I most definatley will get this game. Basically, you have a ship, and you're let go in a breathing galaxy... you can be a mercenary, bounty hunter, merchant, explorer... basically, anything.

and when I say breathing galaxy, I mean it. Around space docks, there's lots of fun little features, like ships docking and going, escorting... in the emptiness in space, you just might come across a freighter ambushed by pirates.

The game has a storyline, but you can personally choose wether you wish to follow it... sure, you HAVE to play the first mission, but it's basically a tutorial, and a lead-in on how you got your ship...

There's a demo over at : http://www.microsoft.com/games/Freelancer/ (and if you're a Microsoft hater, put your petty pride aside, and check it out. It's worth it)

I bought it on Thursday and I have been playing at every oppurrunity that I could get. I haven't tried the X-box version but it is so kick ass. If you like good games that are not boring and that are just killing then you will like this. It is so tactical and realistic. It is also very addicting.

Since this is the PC Gaming thread:

What ever happened to the Harpoon series?
I used to check out the website on that game like 2-3 years ago but it never came.

Anyone know if it'll still be coming out?

For all UT2003 owners.....last night I downloaded the new patch, 2199 without any problems that I could tell. So I did a reboot after the install and went to play mp online......I clicked on it and it froze my brand new pc. :eyeraise: I had no clue what was going on. I did this three more times and each time it froze my pc. So I had to uninstall the whole game in re-install it [which takes forever]. Now it works fine without this patch.

Anybody else try this patch and have any problems with it? I hope so, just so I don't feel like a total n00b.

I haven't installed the patch yet....

Well, I may go ahead and install the patch, I actually need to spend a day updating my laptop, I'm severely backed up with Windows Updates and such.

Can anybody tell some of their favorite JO mods. I'm really looking for something fun to play! :) I've looked at a list of them....and there is like a sea of them. I'm not really sure which to choose, so if somebody could offer suggestions, I'd appreciate it. :)

I like Promod for JO...

You don't see a Jedi running about with Guns all over the place, and you don't see a gunny running around with Force Powers.

Currently, I'm running a home-made mod so as to play SP as Darth Maul.

*Previous edit removed because I found the answer anyway. Pay no attention.*

Say Leemu, where did that image come from? It looks pretty high-res, and there aren't that many high-res shots of KoTor floating around.

Wow, Leemu, I never realised you were so new to PC gaming. You've got a lot of catching up to do. :D if you want to try out some of the older PC titles, luckily some of them are still available on budget release.

If you're looking for games to try out, I'd have to recommend these...

Deus Ex - one of the best games ever made, IMHO. It may look dated now, but the gameplay is rock-solid, and allows for stealth throughout.
Thief 1 & 2 - a refreshing change from running-and-gunning, the aim is to sneak and not get caught (in first person).
Unreal (the original, including the expansion Return To Na Pali) - a nice long FPS with some cool weapons and tricky monsters - and a world you can lose yourself in.
Unreal Tournament (the original - still fast, furious fun)
Return To Castle Wolfenstein - well, i enjoyed it. I hear the MPs quite good too.
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force - a good (but short) game.
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II + Mysteries Of The Sith - you absolutely have to play these :D
Rune - one of the best 3rd person games ever made alongside...
Heretic II
No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 - if you like humour and spy/stealth action with a good story
Aliens v Predator Gold - will scare the pants off you. :D
Severance: Blade Of Darkness - if you don't mind gore
Quake 2 - in preparation for...Quake IV ;)

As for RTS...the one game that hooked me into RTS was Cossacks: European Wars. For some reason, it just sucked me in and wouldn't let go for a while. Since then I've got AoE 1 & 2, AoM, and Galactic Battlegrounds, which are all good RTS games.

On the RPG front, I can heartily recommend...

Neverwinter Nights
Dungeon Siege - is a combat-oriented RPG monster-bashing slug-a-thon that took me 70 hours to complete.
Morrowind - you can pretty much go anywhere and do anything - which means it will steal large chunks of your existence
Eye Of The Beholder 1 & 2 - golden oldie RPGs which although graphically dated are still quite enjoyable.

There are just too many good games out there to play.

I'm undecided about whether I should get Splinter Cell at the moment - I had problems just playing the demo on my rig. I really hate this Radeon 9700 Pro - some games have real issues with it. :(

Currently playing...

SOF2
Codename: Outbreak
Mafia
Neverwinter Nights
NOLF 2 (on hold due to driver problems)
Thief (again)

I can also give Dungeon Siege the thumbs up.

Me and my buds have played that game waaay too much. :p

Is NWN worth the money, StormHammer?

And also, do I need to play all the games before JO, seeing that I own them. Are they worth it?

:)

It depends on what you want out of an RPG. NWN is slower-paced and far more in-depth than DS. You get a similar view to DS and the ability to zoom into the action. However, you can have conversations with most of the NPCs, and you've got the whole range of skills management, different races etc., and a stronger storyline. I'm finding it very enjoyable (although it can be a little repetitive in parts). I'm currently developing a fighter/thief character, and I'm about halfway through.

If you haven't played Jedi Knight or Mysteries Of The Sith...then I highly recommend them. JK is a great game with a great story - ignore the dated-looking graphics and get stuck in, I say. ;) And take your time with it, because there are some pretty good secrets across the levels - it needs quite a bit of exploration to find them all. If you find all the secrets on a level, you get extra force stars to allocate to Force powers later on...

If you don't mind, I'd like to give my two cents as well. In my opinion, I thought that the game was too expensive when I first bought it. The SP campaign is... nice, but kinda dissapointing. Too much hack 'n slash for my taste.

On the other hand, if you have a reliable Internet connection, NWN is more than worth the money. The DM Client is very powerful, as is the toolset. Plus, you can easily arrange a good MP game at neverwinterconnections.com. I've been playing a few MP games for the past few months, and I really got my money worth for it, especially if you play it with a few friendly folks who like to RP as well. It's about as close to PnP as you can get at the moment with a CRPG. (in my humble opinion, of course)

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is quite good game. My first RPG on the computer to and it looks quite nice on my Geforce4 Ti. Thanks to Asus for the game bundle. :D I love being free to do what I want in that game. :)
