I should be getting an earlier birthday present next week, which is a new graphics card. The problem is, I don't know which.

Either a nVidia GeForce 4 MX440 128MB or a ATI Radeon 128MB 9000 dvi.

What do you think I should get?
I don't know anything about video cards, I thought getting a GeForce 4 was the best idea, but from what I've read, it doesn't look like it's best.

I currently have a nVidia TNT M64 32MB, and somehow it can still run JKII okay, lol.

Oh yeah, my brithday's the 27th. ;)

Same here! It is crazy, it works its self like crazy for MoH: AA (that's why I can't play and enjoy it... :( )

I plan on getting a GeForce 4 for Easter since the FX will put it to a much lower price. I need the advice to...

I think I will get the Radeon since it's more money (hopefully meaning better quality) and from what I've read; it's compatible with DirectX 8, while the GeForce is not.

The ATi Radeon 9000 it is. :)

Thanks for the help.

not sure if this is the geforce u want but, anyways the one in here **looks at about 50 geforce cards** geforce4 mx440 8x 64mb ddr is $99.99 (dont think its the same though)

Is the GeForce 4 Ti equal to a Radeon 9800 Pro but better than a Radeon 9000?

Phew, too many dodgy graphic card names. :)

Is the FX out? I thought once that was released, the best ones out now would go down alot. I read this at BioWare some time in Oct when I looked at BioWare...

Hekx

I've heard similar things. The FX which is meant to be like the GeForce 5 isn't out since it keeps being delayed.

But when it is released (I think next month, or something) all the prices of the other GeForces will go down! :)

Woa...theres a 9800????????? I thought there was only a 9700 (Which I have BTW :D)

Hekx

Oh poop, that's the card. 9700. I think the ATi cards seem to beat the GeForce cards hands down, from what I've been reading.

(Hopefully this is on page 2, so I've made a 2 page thread! :D)

-Edit-
Nope. Oh well. :(

I am not looking for a card to run every game, just run KotOR above average. I have the speed and memory, but my TNT 2 won't cut it... :(

Hekx

I think I might need a GeForce Ti, if I want to run SWG. :indif:

Does anyone have a ATi Radeon 9000 with zero problems?
If so, what's your average FPS / frame-rate in JKII?

Sam Fisher

Myself, I'd get a 9700 PRO, because it is better in some ways than the GForce 4...

(But thats only my opinion:D )

I've got the ati radeon 9700 tx......definitely a great card and a little bit cheaper then the pro. :)

if u're looking 4 the best currently, definitely the ATI Radeon 9700 pro

ZePhyR
02-22-2003, 03:46 AM
between those 2, definitely the ATI card. Unless you want a GF4 Ti, then go for the GeForce.

GeForce are good for a newbie user, but in essence they are a practically stupid piece of an expensive kit. New Radeons are much, much better.

Avoid the Geforce 4 MX - it is basically a Geforce 2 Ultra with one or two extra processors added on, doesn't even use the Geforce 4 core.....

Radeon 9000 - probably better to get the Radeon 9700, with the 9900 either out or on the way. The FX is struggling to match it's numbers at the moment, so should be a good buy.
The FX appears to be already shelved as a card, with reports only 100,000 will be made, and they will concentrate on one to beat the ATI cards currently known as R300/R350...

MX chips are like the plague. I had the pleasure of throwing up to try one.

acdcfanbill
02-22-2003, 05:34 AM
Yea, ive heard that teh FX might be shelved completely due to problems with the card and heat. Only nVidia knows for sure tho.

BlackDove
02-22-2003, 05:44 AM
I didn't have the pleasure to try the FX ones yet, but the way I hear about them in reviews, they aren't much currently, but depend a lot on the software distributed along with them, which means they could turn out to be useful sometime in the next century, while the existing Radeon is very close to their performance.

I feel sorry for the people who got stuck with Voodoo, especially if it was a PCI collection :D

I currently have a TNT2, one very very hip card (two years ago) :D

I'm gonna definelty get an ATi Radeon. :)

According to the poll on JKII.net, most people have nVidia cards. :D

Did you check the specs on both cards and then compare each other???

I wouldnt be surprised to find out the Radeon is better. I own a GF3 3D Prophet myself, but i almost bought a Radeon.

It's my longest thread for a long time. ;)

Must be the 9th thread I've ever posted. :D

From all the sources I've found; NVidia is a NO! ATi is a Yes. :)

And your correct :)

Before the Radeon 9000, Nvida was king (i'm talking about price and preformance), but now that Ati has released the 9000, 9500, and 9700, their cards beat the stuffing out of Nvidas MX/Ti's, their both cheaper and preform better.

How many people have a TNT2 card? I thought I was the only one.

I have one, it's in my machine right now; getting a Ati AIW soon though, once I find a good deal. Those AIW's are soo sweet! (Yet alot more expensive than reg. cards :( )

I nearly got a GeForce 4 MX.
But in the end, trying to find graphics cards in my local area seems to be impossible. :(

Thankfully there's a shop down my town with a nicely priced ATi Radeon 9000. :)

The shop I got my PC from is still selling TNT2s. :eyeraise:

Ouch... I think Sony still puts in a TNT2 on one of their machines, I read it in a review once...:eyeraise:

Edit: And here is is: (http://www.zdnet.com/supercenter/stories/overview/0,12069,561116,00.html)

Edit again:

Take a look at this review:

Proving as most of us have said: ATI Radeon 9000 Pro>GeForce4 MX

U R scaring me man. get the Nvidia!! I have a Gforce 4 and it runs great with JK2. All of the graphics settings are on the highest setting and there is no freezing or lag. I love it. Take my word, get the nVidia. You will not be disappointed!!:D :D

My birthday's in two days, and the stupid store still hasn't had the new batch of ATI's in.

If they still don't have them in by tomorrow, after 3 days waiting, I'm going for the GeForce 4.

Woo hoo! I now have a ATi Radeon 128MB 9000 Pro. On the Duel of the Fates map, I get zero slowdown. It rules. :)

The Radeon 9800 Pro (R350) is basically a Radeon 9700 Pro (R300) with a higher core and memory clock. The Radeon 9900 Pro will be the same as the 9800 except with 256MB of video memory. The 9900 will ship later than the 9800. Radeon 9000s (R250) are not based on the R300 core, but rather they are based on the Radeon 8500 (R200) core, so they only have DX 8.1 functionality rather than the 9700's 9.0 functionality. (I have put some of the core code-names in parentheses).

The new Geforce FX contains the much-hyped new NV30 core that can just barely beat the 9700 Pro that has been out for nearly six months. The Geforce4 Ti4800 is based on the 4400 core. Geforce4 MXs are not based on the Geforce4 cores, but rather on the Geforce2 Ultra, as was stated earlier.

Go here (http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20021218/index.html) for further reference. That page includes most video cards except the FX 5800 Ultra. Just breakin' it down for y'all. :)

(im tired right now so i havent botherd to read the whole thread... maybe someone has already said this) i would go with GeForce 4, but not the MX version... its too slow. ATI Radeon 128MB 9000 dvi shows better grafics but it dosent support so many games as nVidia cards do...:)

dont get either

get a Ti 4200 .... the MX is **** as every1 has said

and the only card to beat the GF4's (on a 3d score site i saw) was the 9700 pro

so if u can get a 9700 get it ... if not get a ti4200 64meg like mine ... its fine ... it even ran unreal 2 with good graphics
