View Full Version : Light Entities....

I've a few quuestions, problems rather, which I can't figure out and the tutorials don't really support them either.

The problem is that in JKRadiant it used to show the radius on the 2d (left side) and it was quite usefull cuz it gave an idea that where areas the light will reach. This doesnt seem to be in GTK...is there any way I can check it instead of making a bsp all the time and going in the game to check it?

Other thing, in my big room I gave my light the radius of 6000 but it doesnt really light all of the room. Because of that, I had to add several more entities in the same room. WIll adding so many entities slow the level down? And the lights wont work at all if I change the radius to 5000 or 4000 cuz I want to see how much the room is lighted in that.....but is there a reason why nothing else works except for 6000?

I think thats it for now,

please help

In GtkRadiant 1.2.11+ you can turn on light radiuses in the Preferences. I don't remember the exact place and I'm at work now, but it's there. Then if you select a light entity (or more) then the light radius will be displayed either in 2D and 3D windows.

The Radius key has effect with spotlights only. If you want to make the radius of a normal light entity bigger, then you have to raise the value of the Light key (default is 300).

oh im so sorry, i was talking about the value cuz I read the differences in a tutorial. I wasnt uing the raidus, i was using the value key and im haveing the problemwith that. It doesnt seem to work with any other value than 60000 and can I view how much it lights the area in the editor itself? And the vale key doesnt light all of my room :( i have to add so many entities in order to get it fully lighted. will that slow my level down?

OK, to make myself clear and prevent future misunderstandings between us with lights. :D

Use the key light with a value above 300. If your rooms isn't a very big one you can get a good result with no too much entities.

In the editor you can't see how the lighting will look like after compile but the light spheres in the 3D window are very useful.

There is a thread somewhere here with a discussion about FPS and light entity count. Search for it, read it, the decide as you want. There were no conclusion as I remember. :)

Do you remember what the thread title was? I've been trying to search for it but it comes with no result. or who started the thread.

Thank you :)
