Sending a pm to him ...

actually it is "illegal" on the forums to use someone elses avatar without permission. readd the forums rules.

STTCT 07-21-2003 09:48 AM

*grabs pitchforks and sticks!

Lets Get-em!!!!

"BURN HIM AT THE STAKE" shouts one forumer
"HANG EM!!!" shouts another

hehehehe

WTF does he think he's doing....blatently taking an avatar that you clearly made. It be another if it just happened to be coincidence but how many obi won meets matrix avis are there out there????

uh huh

didn't think so ;)

Sam Fisher 07-21-2003 11:31 AM

Last time I burned something at the stake, it was one of rhett's stealing elvs.:p

The Cheat 07-21-2003 11:43 AM

Young David 07-21-2003 12:24 PM

ha, beat you to it :p

pbguy1211 07-21-2003 12:35 PM

Ah TY! I was looking in the wrong place.
But now does this pertain only to the GB off-topic forum? Or the ENTIRE forum?

Bob Gnarly 07-21-2003 12:54 PM

it should be everywhere

The Cheat 07-21-2003 01:29 PM

its basically the rules for all of the lucas forums because if he posts there he is using that stolen avatar

i dont know what im talking about but oh well

mercatfat 07-21-2003 04:29 PM

Look, he saw a good looking avatar and borrowed it. Consider it a compliment. Also notice that that post says "avoid", not "don't do it or we'll ban you". If he wants it, it's his.

Young David 07-21-2003 05:43 PM

Maybe a strange comparison ... but how would feel is somebody took a pictore of your face as an avatar ... you'd go like ... HEY that's mine (considering that you're not a celebrety and the thief does not know you and you don't know him)

pbguy1211 07-21-2003 05:46 PM

while it's not illegal it wasn't very nice of him. And someone should kindly ask him to remove it. Legal or illegal it wasn't nice... and he should remove it.

mercatfat 07-21-2003 05:50 PM

Actually I'd probably say "Hey, it's nice to see another guy who loves shifty eyes and Ghost World as much as I do."

Then I'd promote him to admin and smile profusely.

Bob Gnarly 07-21-2003 05:54 PM

I KNEW IT, i knew your avatar and custom title where from Ghost world i just wasnt 100% sure

ZBomber 07-22-2003 02:12 AM

Hmm, its not really the same av... its jsut Obi Wan, but with a Matrix Backround...... I dunno. I say let the final choice be up to David. ;)

STTCT 07-22-2003 04:47 AM

YD changed his avi since it happened. YD is nice. He woulda just made the guy one :(

Lil Killa 07-22-2003 05:58 AM

I don't see what all the fus is about I mean it's a picture plain and simple. sure it may be someone elses work of art but unless it is copyrighted or something like that I don't see why anyone shouldn't be ably to use anyone elses av or sig pic.

I make my av and sig pics so that no one actually can take them and actually like having them lol.

Not exactly ... I changed the avi back to the regulair one a few days ago, just before this thread was made ...

ZBomber 07-22-2003 12:55 PM

I agree with you Kila, but he could atleast asked permission from David. Even if he said no, I'm sure he'd make him one. ;)

Lynk Former 07-22-2003 01:53 PM

I know I would be angry if anyone stole my avatar. I mean i made it and it has ME in it so if anyone else used it I'd think of them as being a bastard and I'd do what I could to get them to change it and never steal my av again.

pbguy1211 07-22-2003 02:18 PM

I'd be pissed if someone stoll my avi since it's not really able to be made by everyone for another 2 months. however... now YD has a wicked new avi! The One Ring!

It's called Plagiarism. It's his intellecual property.

mercatfat 07-22-2003 04:57 PM

Actually, it's legally OK under the fair use law, since he's not using it for personal profit.

If you really want to play the overzealous legal wannabe, though, the matrix code and the Obi-wan are both intellectual property stolen from their respective sources.

matt-- 07-22-2003 04:58 PM

Anyone that creates a work holds the copyright to it.

YD, If you want me to kill 'his' avatar, send me a pm.

MrManager 07-22-2003 08:17 PM

Holds the copyright to the Star Wars and Matrix part? :: The user doesn't hold any copyright to any of those.

Still lame for somebody else to nab it obviously, but oh well.

Young David 07-22-2003 08:35 PM

I PM-ed him ... He pm-ed back

Rebel

That was yesterday ... I'll give him one day more (it's a shame how bad the english is from some americans).

On the topic of avatar stealing.

Ofcourse obi wan, the matrix code and the ringspell are property of big companies. Yet they allow use of their pictures to a certain degree. Otherwise sites like theforce.net and theonering.net couldn't even exist. For fan reasons limited use of their material is allowed ...

You'd think LG did pay to create the LF banner at the top of this page? No, they didn't (correct me if I'm wrong).

Why do I find this important? Well ... first, making an animated avatar is not as easy as scaling a picture to 70x70 pixels. My basis avatar 'obi.gif' is a frame by frame subtraction from a SW trailer, rescaled, adjusted and made less than 20kb.

the 'obi-matrix.gif' is a whole other story. I've combined two animations with different sizes and frames and made them transparant. Because of increase of motion in the animation I had to drop some frames and decrease the quality a bit. After that it took some color adjustment (like the obi-ring.gif avatar, it needs more blue) to coplete it.

Second, the avatar represents me. When people see a post with an animated holo obi-wan next to it, they think of me. There's only one who has that avatar, and that's me. It's kinda like my face on the forum.

So I don't wanna see anyone with that avatar running around here, let alone without asking permission. That's not only for obi.gif, but also obi-matrix.gif, obi-ring.gif and all future variations ...

Bob Gnarly 07-22-2003 08:36 PM

Still an avatars supposed to represent you and if hes stealing another persons avatar hes not really representing himself hes showing the avatar of someone else. So LK your avatar cant be stolen unless someone else has those initials but then again yours isnt the fanciest thing in the world so no one would think about stealing it.

DAMN YOU YD, YOU BEAT ME TO IT AGAIN!:p

The Cheat 07-22-2003 08:57 PM

yeah an avatar is a very personal thing and it isnt cool when somebody uses one that you work hard to make

matt-- 07-23-2003 12:37 AM

General characters would probably fall under the fair use clause.

It appears he changed the avatar ...

one less thing to worry about.
