Let's talk about guitars!

Seeing how Yufster is pregnant, this is the time to talk about guitars.

Personally, I tried to learn, lacked the patience, or the talent. I never got past the power punk chords, so I had a brief stint in a punk band as a rythm guitarist, not to dissimilar from Naked Raygun or Fugazi. I gave it up after a while when one of the members decided I had a really nice voice, so I took over on the mic instead, and it has stuck over the years.

My first, and last guitar was a Krammer, off white with the bridge on the strings. Had to tune it about four times a day, then it got on my nerves. I sold it about 5 years ago for $200.

My favorite guitar belonged to a guy in one of my old bands called "Drive Naked Save Clothes". He bought this thing in a pawn shop for $25, and at one particular show, he pulled a Jimmi Hendrix and lit it on fire.

He is playing it in this song:

I've been playing for a little over a year now. I've just been teaching myself, which I know can be dangerous but I think I've been very vigilant in curbing any bad habits that can pop up.

I'm left handed but I play righty. Not really because it feels better but that, well, have you seen how much lefty guitars cost? When choice doesn't matter, pick the cheapest route, right? :D

My first was a MIM Fat Strat like this one:

and about four months ago picked up this Montara:

I luvs me some finger pickin'. :)

CapNColostomy 01-02-2005 11:53 PM

I've been playing 12 years now. I like guitars a little more suited to heavy music, such as Ibanez and Washburns. I'll be getting a new guitar next month with income tax dough if all goes well. And it'll most likely be one of the above mentioned brands.

PS. Floyd Rose locking bridges and nuts rawk.

Ray Jones 01-03-2005 12:26 AM

Oooo. Nice. A thread about guitars. Maybe i find out here how exactly Yufster got impregnated.

(Maaan, you must know, I don't own guitars, i don't play guitars and I don't know why they're called guitars, the only thing I know is ther are .. so thingies)

So errm.. , I personally can imagine the classical dog style on the desk number. I mean.. Yufster is sooo HOT, I assume she does everything we want. Especially for ten dollars.

^^;

Alien426 01-03-2005 12:41 AM

What, Yuffy is pregnant??

<tear-filled eyes>I'll be father.</tear-filled eyes>

If Bill/Keane/Ray is the father I'll kill him and eat his spawn.

*Ignores last 2 posts.*

I've been playing since I was about 16. 5 of those years were spent at Berklee College of Music as a guitar major.

I should be better than I am. :(

I have a whole slew of axes... I listed them somewhere, with photos, so I won't bother to try and do it again.
The Paul Reed Smith is my favorite. It's not only the best guitar I own... it's also the nicest guitar I have ever played. I lucked out when I found this one. Actually, my dad found it for me and bought it on the spot. I just paid him back.

My favorite player is Steve Morse (who you might be interested to learn, Rhett, is a left handed guy who plays righty... faster than hell about it too!)

MP3 of my playing: http://edlib.homestead.com/files/Sally.mp3
Pretty old now... also pretty silly and more than mildly offensive. But an honest assesment of what I can do in a pinch, since this was recorded as a live track: No overdubs, no fixes, and we improvised the song with the tape rolling. We were making it up as we were playing it.

Fender 01-03-2005 07:26 AM

My Guitar playing is actually pretty abysmal, I tend to try and play things which are too hard for me to handle, and fail miserably.

I play a good old Vintage SG, which I adore, but I generally just play rhythm for someone elses lead pleasure, and take the mic alot more than I am ever allowed near a guitar.

Me n my band are going into the studio in about 2 months, so I will post whatever we get done on here, so you can be amazed and buy my record. Or download it off me, your choice.

toenail1 01-03-2005 11:59 AM

I've been playing for about 7 months now, but have been told that I am very good for that time (and also self taught).

Boba Rhett 01-03-2005 02:26 PM

Oh my, Ed. Pr0n music? Nothing but class, my friend. :D

I loved that song. "Sally's in a hotdog mood" is the best saying. Ever.

edlib 01-03-2005 03:51 PM

Yup.

It's a loooooong story. You can get a taste of it at this post: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthrea...691#post955691 where I explain where "Sally" comes from.

There is actually a whole CD of this stuff we recorded in the course of one very surreal day in Northern California, around the Bay Area. This is actually one of the least offensive tracks we did. Really.

I have sent both Nitro and Jem a copy of the full session. Ask them about it next time you come across one of them! ;) (Or if you PM me your address I could send you a copy.)

edlib 01-03-2005 04:23 PM

Received! :)

Give me a day or 2 to get everything together.

Boba Rhett 01-03-2005 04:49 PM

Seriously? Awesome.

CapNColostomy 01-03-2005 08:06 PM

I've been hunting, and decided instead of going with another Ibanez or Washburn to instead get this:

http://www.guitartrader.com/itm_img/...-PROTOMB-f.jpg

I love this thing. It looks like a friggin' weapon. I hope to have it around this time next month. :)

Boba Rhett 01-03-2005 08:11 PM

Oooooooh, B.C. Rich, cool!

I don't think I could resist the urge to hit people with that! :)

Rogue Nine 01-03-2005 08:14 PM

You'll stab yourself in the nads every time you try to play a chord. :p

CapNColostomy 01-03-2005 11:59 PM

Yeah, but I'll be the coolest looking guitarist to ever stab himself in...wait a sec...

Darth Groovy 01-04-2005 12:09 AM

Hook up some rockets and a flame thrower CapN'!

Your guitar will be so damn cool, it won't make a damn bit of difference if you are good or not. Kids will come just to see teh guitar!

Now you can rock on.

I shall name it Anticapos because it'll keep your nuts from moving. :brow:

edlib 01-04-2005 02:28 AM

Hmmmm... pointy!

*SOBS* That may be *SNIFFLE* the nicest thing anyone's ever given me.

That's not shown actual size, is it?

toenail1 01-04-2005 12:57 PM

I'm not a fan of B.C. Rich's. I don't get that whole "hardcore" thing nowandays. I like my guitars to have at least 1 curve to it...

But whatever you like, it's your guitar:p .

Heres mine: http://www.parkerguitars.com/code/mo..._p38_intro.asp

Read the specs. The one on the front page is the same color as mine "transparent red".

elTee 01-04-2005 01:02 PM

Doh, I saw "sally" and thought you recorded the song while smoking some salvia or something.

Joshi 01-04-2005 01:50 PM

Because it has nothing to do with anything I'm interested in.

Actually, I would like to learn one day, my brother in law got my sister by teaching himself to play the guitar just because she said she like spanish guitar music.

plus it'd be nice for there to actually be a guitar in my hand when I play along to music (air guitar rocks!)

Who says we didn't?

There were some strange chemicals flowing around the studio back in those days.

Fender 01-05-2005 08:51 AM

Salvia tastes horrible.

Edlib:
How many songs are there on the don't drink the water sessions? I am just downloading the first lot now, but ive got 250MB of space on my email so just keep sending.

elTee 01-05-2005 08:53 AM

Haha did you chew some? I'm going to buy some when I have some more money, but I'm not chewing the leaves. I know you trip for longer, but I'd get bored waiting for it.

JofaGuht 01-05-2005 01:17 PM

Wes Anderson Effinities. They make picking as easy as hell.

But don't take my advice. I'm a synthesizer guy.

Um... 17.

Most of them are fairly small... with a few big ones thrown in.

OK. I'll send a bunch more tonight!

I'm not sure what you are referring to with "Wes Anderson." Isn't he a film director?

I know Tom Anderson Guitars: http://www.andersonguitars.com/newsite/gallery.cfm

They are really sweet! I don't own one, but I really wish I did!

I believe there's a tea/infusion of salvia that lasts even longer than chewing it. In fact, that's how the Mazatecs did it. You'll have a search for a recipe though. You can by a bag of the tea, but it costs crap loads.

Whoops did I say "Wes Anderson Effinity"? What I meant was "Les Paul/Epiphone". My friend just corrected me. I have absolutely no clue where "Wes Anderson Effinity" came from.

edlib 01-05-2005 06:34 PM

Must be the salvia tea... ;)

JofaGuht 01-06-2005 03:12 PM

Why didn't I expect that comeback?

No, actually, The guitar was originally Epiphone but it was bought out by Les Paul. It's not a great guitar, but its really easy to play. I suck at guitar so that probably has something to do with it.

edlib 01-06-2005 04:01 PM

Yeah, Gibson Guitars bought out Epiphone back in the 50's.

After that they became thier low-cost, manufactured-over-seas brand. Basically the Gibsons are mostly hand made in America, and the Epis are mostly machine made in Asia somewhere.
The Epis meet most of the specs of the Gibson models they copy, and they are actually pretty high quality for low-price guitars.
If you have a professional setup done to them, and replace the electronics, most of them are pretty damn nice for what you pay.
